Welcome to Apple Insider: The Fifth Beta of iOS 11.4 and Updates to Mac OS, TV OS, and Watch OS
We are here with Andrew, and we have the fifth beta of iOS 11.4 alongside the fifth betas of updates for Mac OS, TV OS, and watch OS. This is the fifth beta, so what really is they're changing at this point before this actually gets released? Luckily, not much has changed, which means we are getting closer and closer to release.
There's one minor change that stands out, though - a ridiculous back and forth with the volume icon inside the control center. It was originally broken in iOS 11.2, then it was fixed, only to be half-broken again. But now, in the fifth beta, it is finally fixed once more. This means that everyone can rest easy knowing that the volume icon now animates correctly as the volume is adjusted in real-time.
Now that we've addressed this minor change, let's look at the two looming questions: how has performance, and will this be the GM? First, let's take a look at performance. We ran our normal Geekbench test and compared it to how we've seen in iOS 11.3 as well as all the other betas that we saw off for iOS 11.4. Unfortunately, nothing too exciting has been discerned yet. We can still see that we have some pretty solid performance. Looking at them in comparison, we still have a really high single-core score and a decently high multi-core score.
However, it's worth noting that they did drop a little bit. If we go back to May 7 when we ran it on the last beta, which was all a huge improvement in performance, we can see that we have about $4,210,300 for our single-core score. But we definitely dropped on that multi-core score, although single core is still up there. So, no real hits to performance.
Moving on to our second question: will this be the GM? This is for sure a sizable update, coming in at 2.2 gigs for the iPhone 10, which is something you don't usually see unless it's going to be the actual GM update before being released. When we jump into settings and check out the actual version number, we still have "a" appended to the end. We also have a few additional characters there that we wouldn't normally see if this was the actual GM version.
So, is it the GM? We're not sure yet. We could still see one more beta release before the final version arrives, but we are very confident that this will be released before "Dub" Dub DC arrives at the first week of June.
