**Hands-on with the Huawei P30 Pro: First Impressions**
I recently got to get my hands on the Huawei P30 Pro, and I have to say, it's a very impressive device. The periscope zoom on this phone is particularly cool, but I haven't actually taken any sample photos back with me yet, so I don't have much to judge by at this moment. However, I did get to test it out for a review, and the concept is definitely cool.
The autofocus seems kind of jumpy with close-up subjects, which made me feel like it's a little bit finicky there. Don't get me wrong, the idea of having a periscope zoom on your phone is really exciting, but the execution we'll have to see about. Definitely make sure you subscribe for the full review to see that when it comes out.
The rest of the P30 Pro is honestly incremental improvements and checks all the boxes. It's definitely an S10 competitor, in my opinion. The Twilight color of the P20 Pro was a hit, so they're doing a bunch more gradient colors with this phone. I'm gonna go ahead and say that this blue color called Aurora is the best-looking, but there will also be an Amber Sunrise, Pearl White, Breathing Crystal, and Black.
The display on the P30 Pro has been updated to a full-screen 6.4-inch OLED panel at 23:40 by 1080 resolution. Instead of the chin fingerprint reader from last year, which many people forget about, it's also rocking an in-display fingerprint reader again, but this time it's optical instead of ultrasonic. So, like with phones like the OnePlus 7 Pro, you'll still have to deal with the cons of optical fingerprinting, such as not working when there's debris on your hands and having to shine a bright light at your finger to read it.
However, I did find that it seemed pretty fast to set up with my finger, which is a good sign. This tech is slowly getting better, and I think a few iterations in it will feel like a standard. Also, the phone has a cut-out notch at the top for the 32-megapixel selfie camera, which looks kind of like the Essential Phone's notch but slightly more curved.
The specs on the P30 Pro are flagship-grade, with a Kirin 980 chip, 8GB of RAM, and a huge 4200mAh battery. The phone is IP68 certified, has a faster eFiling system, fast charging, fast wireless charging, and it still has that incredibly slow 2.5W reverse wireless charging feature if you want to use it. Honestly, though, the only thing they can't say they have in this phone is the headphone jack.
In terms of UI, the P30 Pro runs EMUI 9.1 on top of Android Pie, and I've said before that it's not my favorite, especially with all the improvements Samsung's made to their skin lately. However, as a total package, the P30 Pro clearly checks a lot of boxes and is definitely worth considering, especially for those who want to win at blind smartphone camera tests or have a habit of zooming in on their photos obscenely far.
**Comparison with Other Devices**
The S10 Plus is still going to be the champ, especially in the US when it's in carrier stores and also a bit cheaper. However, for those who are really into cameras and want all the blind smartphone camera tests or if you have a habit of zooming in on your photos, this phone might be worth considering as well.
**Conclusion**
The Huawei P30 Pro is an impressive device that checks all the boxes and feels like a worthy competitor to other high-end flagships. While it may not have every feature, it's certainly worth checking out for those who want the best camera experience on a smartphone. Stay tuned for the full review when it comes out.
