Toyota C-HR review - The best-looking car of 2024! 😮

The New Toyota CHR: A Comprehensive Review

As I recently had the opportunity to test drive the new Toyota CHR, I was excited to see how it would perform on both straight roads and twisty corners. From my experience, the CHR is not as bad as its predecessors, but there are still some issues that need to be addressed.

One of the noticeable features of the CHR is its CVT automatic gearbox. This type of transmission can sometimes produce a droning sound from the engine due to the constant holding of revs by the system. However, Toyota has made efforts to quiet down this noise, and it's not as bad as it used to be. Nevertheless, when you accelerate hard, such as when overtaking on a dual carriageway, the CVT can produce a slightly unpleasant sound.

Despite its limitations, I found the CHR's Tor suspension system to be quite effective in handling bumps on twisty roads. The steering is light but responsive, making it easy to maneuver the car through tight corners. However, there is one thing that sort of ruins the fun element - the CVT gearbox again. It can make the car feel slow and unresponsive when you throw it into gear, especially during acceleration. This is a bit like when you're on an internet video call and your internet is just slow and you start freezing or stuttering to everyone else.

On the other hand, a gr version of the CHR with a turbocharged petrol engine would be truly awesome. Toyota definitely could do it, but for now, we don't have that option. However, I did find that the 1.8L version of the CHR does not take long to get to 60mph, accelerating from 0-60 in just 10.2 seconds.

Speaking of acceleration, I took a few laps on a twisty road to test the CHR's performance. With my special timing gear and a bit of manual intervention, I was able to launch the car from 0-60mph in an impressive 9.8 seconds. While not quite as fast as some other cars in its class, I think this is still a respectable figure.

The economy of the CHR is also worth mentioning. According to Toyota's estimates, it should achieve around 50mpg on the combined cycle, but my own testing showed that I was averaging closer to 46mpg. However, if you're really gentle with the car, you may be able to get even better fuel economy.

In conclusion, while the CHR is not perfect, it's a solid choice for those looking for a practical and comfortable ride. Its good looks, spacious interior, and effective suspension system make it an attractive option in its class. However, if you're looking for a more dynamic driving experience, you may want to consider other options.

As always, I'd love to hear from my readers on what they think of the CHR. Do you agree with my assessment? Do you have any thoughts on Toyota's decision to use a CVT transmission in this car? Let me know in the comments below!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is the new Toyota CHR and it's a little bit like clothes from Zara because while it is mainstream it actually looks designer now in this video I'm going to talk you around the exterior what a stunning looking car I'm going to show you the interior try its technology what was that all about take it for a drive there's a pause and there's the mooving sound and of course I'm going to launch it to see how quick it is from not to 60 M hour I'm Matt Watson and you're watching carwow if you thought the title was pretty daring with the previous CHR then have a look at this they've really taken it to a whole new level and I like it what a stunning looking car it's a small family SUV yeah it looks so futuristic and sporty just check how steeply R this rear window is and how got this spoiler effect from the rear lights this is what they look like illuminated cool what's also cool is this you got the Toyota CHR logo just in there I like that I like the fact they haven't gone for any fake exhaust or nonsense or fake vents good looking car loads of angles loads of creases love it from the side as well the sloping roof line the roof spoiler just looks so good and so interesting now this car comes on 19in Allo Wheels but the entry level wheel size is 17 in that is going to be too small you can even get 20s but I don't think you need larger than these 19s this is a mid-spec car and you get this black roof the entry level car is just one color however the top spec car actually has a black bottom looks like this it's a bit weird wouldn't do that anyway moving down the side the wind screen is very steeply r as well continuing that sporty theme the wheel arches seem quite extended gives it a stocky stance I like the shape of these lights once again very futuristic and really I'm just loving the look of this car just works so well and this big grill I like it it actually looks very expensive but is it well I'm going to go on to carow right now here we go and let's see the starting price so look starting price £ 31,2 190 going up to just over £43,000 average carb saving on the new Toyota CHR which is all new £ 2,643 not bad buying you can see for yourself how it can help you or you can just click on the pop out Banner that should be appearing up there right now alternatively just Google help me carw and my team and I will help you choose your perfect car and get it for a price your love now on with the video the interior of this Chi is just as interesting as the exterior have a look at the shape and Contours on this Dash look at it look at it look at it look at it like it also material quality oo so that soft touch up there this is really squidgy and nice up there that is squidy and nice looks expensive and solid feeling this is soft to the touch as well and here oh yeah it's only when you go further down and down here that things get scratchy and then there's these trims in here which are very nice I like it a lot you got the center console here that separates you from the front passenger and it is very driver focused if you look you can see this infotainment system is sort of angled towards you so to The Climate controls and a big thumbs up to Toyota for not putting them in the inment system you can quickly just set your temperature while you're driving and look Orit entry level models get heated front seat which is nice the entry level model actually has a slightly smaller infotainment screen than this one all of the models have this size and it's fairly easy to just navigate through see what I mean it's dead easy plus you got Apple carplay and Android auto you got digital DS as well there and you can alter the views between one two or three let's a look three look there it's like that two there we go there to be fair look the refresh rate that's a bit laggy it's not great but there's plenty of information there for you and it's all quite useful the driving position is really good I always find the driving position in Japanese cars brilliant because obviously as a nation the Japanese drive on the right like the people in Great Britain do and so they're originally conceived as right-and drive so I've got electric seats in this particular model and you can sit up pretty high if you really want to though that does slightly spoil the sporty feeling of this car you want to get it as low as you can you still get a good view out now in terms of storage let's have a looky under here look pointless tray and you got in here look see that's a 12vt socket that's a USBC you got your gear select a nub in here I don't know why they just don't have buttons this thing kind of seems a bit Superfluous anyhow got cup holders there and they're big enough to hold largest bottles as you can see down here is your wireless charging pad and you've also got another USBC up there as well there's a tray here where you can store stuff they sort of missed a trick though could do with a USBC on there as well don't know why they didn't bother to fit that glove box is a decent size sometimes there's not enough room for anything other than the manual in a car's glove box but that has plent of space door bins are big as well large bottle all fit in there no problem at all okay let's have a look at some other things big sun visor it's good and big vanity mirror oh seats fairly body hugging and depending on which model you go for you get different materials on the seats this one has a sort of like suede Alcantara effect they feel quite sporty the rear seats of this car are reasonably cramped see knee room isn't great I've got quite short legs I'm more like upper body than lower body however head room is actually okay it's better than the previous CHR however overall space in the back isn't as good as in a Volkswagen t-rock if you click on the pop out banner up there you should be able to watch my in-depth video review of that car when he comes to Counting three in the back of once it's not great it really it's a tight squeeze and what happens is you push the two two people in the outer seats closer to this curved roof line and they'll end up like just brushing their heads against that another thing I found is it's quite tricky to fit a child seat in this car so you're going to have to move that front passenger seat forward to be able to get it in the first place and if you got a bulky rear facing seat you're going to have to move it quite a way forward this not the most practical it's also quite dark back here now mid Speck and upwards get this glass roof is standard but because it's got no blind it's tinted so it doesn't let as much lighting as you might like same with these back windows they're tinted on Mid speec and above and they're quite small so once again it's quite dark in here thankfully the rear windows dig all the way down which is a good thing what's not so good though is that you don't have any door bins you do have a cup holder here where's my bottle oh there it is right and you really push it in you can fit a largest bottle in there so I guess that's all right I do like the way that this axes a armrest though that's quite nice but you don't have a central arm rest none at all and there's no through loading either H let's check out the boot the luggage capacity is 388 L which is pretty good for this kind of car however if you have the plug-in hybrid because you got like hybriding us underneath the boot floor reduces the luggage capacity to 310 L not ideal this isn't ideal either look quite a big load lip to lift stuff over so you got to watch your back you got a whole heavy camera kit about thankfully the boot doesn't have a massive bumper lip here so you don't scratch the back of your car when you are lugging things in and out let's have a little look what features we have in here look somewhere to do some tying of things another place to do some tying of things and some others over the other side what about if you fold the seats down do they lie flat I bet they're lie flat but you're going to have a big yes look a big Ridge I knew it I knew it it's a real pain that it's actually when you're trying to load items then you want to push them to the front of the car because you can oh hopefully nothing in there can be broken shouldn't be it's a py case they designed to take that cuz we take them on planes that was a bit annoying any speaking of annoying yes okay right so look under here you'll see there is no storage space for the parle shelf so when you haven't got it in place with the seats up and you need to load your car up you're probably going to have to take it there like it might get crushed you put things on it suppose you might be able to put it behind the seats like that but it's less than ideal and that brings on to five annoying things about the Toyota CHR this car likes to warn you of absolutely everything for instance when you press the brake you get this little brake indicator just appearing here on the dash it doesn't actually say how hard you're pressing the brake that might be useful I don't know but it just says that you've press the brake it's like yeah I know I've pressed the brake because I've pressed the brake this car just wants to hurt you so the way you have to open the door handles while rotating your handle like that can after a while give you repetitive strain injury in this tendon it might te what will definitely get you is this though it's caught me out a number of times this door lck extends further back than you think it's quite pointed there but sometimes you open the door like that just into your side and it really just hurts when it gets through the kidneys also the opening is then smaller than you imagine so as you're getting in the way this truth you end up like bashing in neon it quite often then you end up with a dead leg and that's oh it's not great and then if you get into the front this part of the dash extends and he a bit pointed there that sometimes when you're getting in you go and you ah give yourself a dead leg on there as well what is it with this car for some reason Toyota has only decided to fit One USB charging socket here in the back seats which means that the kids are going to fall out over who gets to charge their phone well the old ch had a rear window wiper this new one doesn't maybe they decided didn't need it cuz it's so steeply red or probably spoil the look but believe me when it's raining You'll wish you had one I mean even my old Porsche 911 the 996 that's got a rear wind screen wiper and I use it quite a bit well when it's raining obviously to turn off the annoying Lane departure warning system in this car you have to go into the settings menu by pressing and holding that button and then you scroll down to LDA Lane departure assist I imagine that means press and hold the button down again then you can turn it off you might want to turn off the annoying speed sign recognition as well because every time it reads a new speed sign it goes beep at you now you could set that up before you go for a drive which is fine the only thing is if you stop the car and restart it it resets everything to being on again you forget about it and then you have to BL turn them all off when you're driving which is a f however it's not all bad that does bring on to five cool things about this car for for instance you get a load of safety kit of standard and one thing that I will definitely leave on is the blind spot warning you also get adaptive cruise control with Lane keeping assist so this car will basically automatically keep your safe distance from the car in front and automatically steer to keep you in Lane as with other new Toyotas you get a 10year 100,000 Mi warranty that's what I call Peace of Mind motoring you can get the CHR with a proper heads up display so you can see your speed without having to take your eyes off the road if you carry three people in the back of the car the person in the middle seat will block your view at the back window in the rear view mirror however you can get this car with a camera system which will actually send a feed to the rear view mirror at the flick of a switch from mids speec upwards the CHR gets 64 different colors of ambient lighting look there we go let's go for different colors broken it you can get the HR with a 1.8 L petrol engine M to an electric motor that puts out 140 horsepower or a 2 L petrol engine made to an electric motor that puts out 197 horsepower those are the self-charging hybrids you know your traditional hybrids but you'll also be able to get a 2 L petrol engine made to an electric motor that's a plug-in hybrid and that one has 223 horsepower obviously that one would be able to go further on electric power load than the normal self-charging hybrids but which version of the Toyota CHR should you pick well I've actually configured my favorite version both the engine and hybrid version plus the trim level I think is best using the Carwell configurator if you want to see which one I've configured click on the pop out Banner that should be appearing just up there right now to find out which one I chose right let's see what this Toyota CHR is like to drive starting off with round town so ah just realized I forgot to turn off the Speed sign recognition although I don't know why it's saying it's a 30 m hour cuz it's not it's a 20 maybe I'll spot this sign spot the sign no okay oh yeah it did there we go anyway I'm going to do a U-turn I'm going to press this button down here to get my surround view cameras up because this car's turning Circle while okay at 11.6 M isn't great compare to some of its competitors such as aano which has a turning circle of 10 6 M quite a lot less but having this whole camera system which is very clear really does help when maneuvering so too does the fact that the dash is quite low so you get a great view forward now you do have quite a bit of a pillar there but this little quarter light helps what's not so good though is that rear pillar well you got a decent sized rear window that bluming pillar there in the corner creates a massive blind spot when you're like looking around to draw maneuver or park or something or when you're pulling it out of those kind of filter Junctions anyhow let's get moving steering is nice and light but one thing you might find surprised ing is that the suspension feels a little bit firmer than you might imagine for this kind of car you think it's going to be all soft and squidgy but it's actually quite poised and Tau wait a minute there's the beep again why do it think it's a 30 there's no 30 signs it's a 20 what was that all about oh was telling me off for looking around and knock keep my eyes on the road ahead little sensors in there just of monitoring your eyes seeing where you're looking anyway break actually quite sharp but not overly sharp sometimes with hybrids they can feel a bit grabby because the first part of the braking is like this regen effect but here very smooth yet quite strong most of the time this car will just putle along in town in E only mode so long as you're very gentle with the accelerator you give it even the slightest prod then the internal combustion engine will kick in though it's so smooth when it does that you barely recognize it what you really sense is the fact that you get a little bit more speed and that green EV light goes off look you wouldn't really know it's quite quiet when you're going at low speeds though things do change when you go at slightly faster speeds as I'll illustrate now here's what I'm talking about you're at 40 mph you come to a dual carriageway you need to overtake the car in front so you want to accelerate all of a sudden so I'm going to do it now 3 2 1 floor the throttle it's not the fastest car but when you accelerate hard you do get a little bit of a droning sound from the engine because of the CVT automatic gearbox which holds the revs at a constant level and then just messes around with the gears to get you to accelerate while the engine revs Rising if that makes sense now it's not as bad as Toyota systems in the past it is quieter however can you hear it there now that noise isn't as bad as it used to be in the old CHR they seem to have quietened it down somewhat however a Honda HRV has a similar CVT gearbox but it somehow tricks you into thinking it's just a normal gearbox going through the gears it's much better I prefer that there is a bit of wind noise from up there and a bit of road noise but it's about average for this kind of car anyway one of the big benefits of a CVT is that it does actually help your economy so what is the economy of this car supposed to do 60 m to the gallon however this one is averaging 4 6 it's all right it's not brilliant I reckon though if you're really really like super gentle with this car you will get over 50 m to the gallon I've obviously not been gentle enough speaking of which let's try on a twisty road now Toyota want to make this car fun to drive it's one of the reasons for the Tor suspension so let's see what it does when we check it at some Corners so the steering is pretty nice it's light but it's responsive for the car where you want it to go when you're going faster the suspension actually does well dealing with bums there is one thing that sort of ruins the fun element and it's that CVT gearbox again it just makes his car not feel that responsive to the throttle so you throw it a band it goes around you think yeah I was awesome now I'm going to hit the accelerator and catapult myself out of it but you press Throttle Down there's a pause and there's the moving sound from the gearbox and it's all just a bit slow and unresponsive it's almost it's a little bit like when you're on something like an internet video call and your Internet is just slow and you just start freezing or stuttering to everyone else is watch you don't real you know what this car with a little turbocharged petrol engine will feel really quite cool do you know what would be awesome a gr version one with the gr yar's engine that' be Wicked but no we don't have that well we don't have it yet but but Toyota definitely could do it do you know what a Ford pumo with its turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine has a slightly more Punchy feel to it if you want to check out my full inth video review of one of those click on the pop out banner up there Toyota says the 1.8 L version of the CHR will do not to 60 in 10.2 seconds but I'm going to find out for myself by using my specialist timing gear up here to launch it I'm going to use the hold function and then just floor the accelerator because I think if I press the foot brake and the accelerator together it'll have a bit of a fit and perform poorly 3 2 1 now I actually took off all right here we go what time are we going to get come on hey that's a not 60 9.8 seconds that's actually all right however I think I'd like a bit of extra punch and if it was me and I was buying a CHR I'd pay the extra for the 2 L version I just water so then what's my final verdict on the new Toyota CHR should you avoid it should you consider it should you short list it or should you just go right ahead and buy it well I reckon you should short list the CHR looks good dri nice and it's more practical than it was before even though it's not quite perfect it does have that I want it Vibe about it if you enjoyed the video please give it a like it really helps us out and let me know what you think of my verdict on this car in the comments below if you click on the video Windows you can watch some more videos and if you click on the carwow logo you can go to carwow window wiper this new one doesn't maybe they decided didn't need it cuz it's so steeply red or probably spoil the look but believe me when it's raining You'll wish you had one I mean even my old Porsche 911 the 996 that's got a rear wind screen wiper and I use it quite a bit well when it's raining obviously to turn off the annoying Lane departure warning system in this car you have to go into the settings menu by pressing and holding that button and then you scroll down to LDA Lane departure assist I imagine that means press and hold the button down again then you can turn it off you might want to turn off the annoying speed sign recognition as well because every time it reads a new speed sign it goes beep at you now you could set that up before you go for a drive which is fine the only thing is if you stop the car and restart it it resets everything to being on again you forget about it and then you have to BL turn them all off when you're driving which is a f however it's not all bad that does bring on to five cool things about this car for for instance you get a load of safety kit of standard and one thing that I will definitely leave on is the blind spot warning you also get adaptive cruise control with Lane keeping assist so this car will basically automatically keep your safe distance from the car in front and automatically steer to keep you in Lane as with other new Toyotas you get a 10year 100,000 Mi warranty that's what I call Peace of Mind motoring you can get the CHR with a proper heads up display so you can see your speed without having to take your eyes off the road if you carry three people in the back of the car the person in the middle seat will block your view at the back window in the rear view mirror however you can get this car with a camera system which will actually send a feed to the rear view mirror at the flick of a switch from mids speec upwards the CHR gets 64 different colors of ambient lighting look there we go let's go for different colors broken it you can get the HR with a 1.8 L petrol engine M to an electric motor that puts out 140 horsepower or a 2 L petrol engine made to an electric motor that puts out 197 horsepower those are the self-charging hybrids you know your traditional hybrids but you'll also be able to get a 2 L petrol engine made to an electric motor that's a plug-in hybrid and that one has 223 horsepower obviously that one would be able to go further on electric power load than the normal self-charging hybrids but which version of the Toyota CHR should you pick well I've actually configured my favorite version both the engine and hybrid version plus the trim level I think is best using the Carwell configurator if you want to see which one I've configured click on the pop out Banner that should be appearing just up there right now to find out which one I chose right let's see what this Toyota CHR is like to drive starting off with round town so ah just realized I forgot to turn off the Speed sign recognition although I don't know why it's saying it's a 30 m hour cuz it's not it's a 20 maybe I'll spot this sign spot the sign no okay oh yeah it did there we go anyway I'm going to do a U-turn I'm going to press this button down here to get my surround view cameras up because this car's turning Circle while okay at 11.6 M isn't great compare to some of its competitors such as aano which has a turning circle of 10 6 M quite a lot less but having this whole camera system which is very clear really does help when maneuvering so too does the fact that the dash is quite low so you get a great view forward now you do have quite a bit of a pillar there but this little quarter light helps what's not so good though is that rear pillar well you got a decent sized rear window that bluming pillar there in the corner creates a massive blind spot when you're like looking around to draw maneuver or park or something or when you're pulling it out of those kind of filter Junctions anyhow let's get moving steering is nice and light but one thing you might find surprised ing is that the suspension feels a little bit firmer than you might imagine for this kind of car you think it's going to be all soft and squidgy but it's actually quite poised and Tau wait a minute there's the beep again why do it think it's a 30 there's no 30 signs it's a 20 what was that all about oh was telling me off for looking around and knock keep my eyes on the road ahead little sensors in there just of monitoring your eyes seeing where you're looking anyway break actually quite sharp but not overly sharp sometimes with hybrids they can feel a bit grabby because the first part of the braking is like this regen effect but here very smooth yet quite strong most of the time this car will just putle along in town in E only mode so long as you're very gentle with the accelerator you give it even the slightest prod then the internal combustion engine will kick in though it's so smooth when it does that you barely recognize it what you really sense is the fact that you get a little bit more speed and that green EV light goes off look you wouldn't really know it's quite quiet when you're going at low speeds though things do change when you go at slightly faster speeds as I'll illustrate now here's what I'm talking about you're at 40 mph you come to a dual carriageway you need to overtake the car in front so you want to accelerate all of a sudden so I'm going to do it now 3 2 1 floor the throttle it's not the fastest car but when you accelerate hard you do get a little bit of a droning sound from the engine because of the CVT automatic gearbox which holds the revs at a constant level and then just messes around with the gears to get you to accelerate while the engine revs Rising if that makes sense now it's not as bad as Toyota systems in the past it is quieter however can you hear it there now that noise isn't as bad as it used to be in the old CHR they seem to have quietened it down somewhat however a Honda HRV has a similar CVT gearbox but it somehow tricks you into thinking it's just a normal gearbox going through the gears it's much better I prefer that there is a bit of wind noise from up there and a bit of road noise but it's about average for this kind of car anyway one of the big benefits of a CVT is that it does actually help your economy so what is the economy of this car supposed to do 60 m to the gallon however this one is averaging 4 6 it's all right it's not brilliant I reckon though if you're really really like super gentle with this car you will get over 50 m to the gallon I've obviously not been gentle enough speaking of which let's try on a twisty road now Toyota want to make this car fun to drive it's one of the reasons for the Tor suspension so let's see what it does when we check it at some Corners so the steering is pretty nice it's light but it's responsive for the car where you want it to go when you're going faster the suspension actually does well dealing with bums there is one thing that sort of ruins the fun element and it's that CVT gearbox again it just makes his car not feel that responsive to the throttle so you throw it a band it goes around you think yeah I was awesome now I'm going to hit the accelerator and catapult myself out of it but you press Throttle Down there's a pause and there's the moving sound from the gearbox and it's all just a bit slow and unresponsive it's almost it's a little bit like when you're on something like an internet video call and your Internet is just slow and you just start freezing or stuttering to everyone else is watch you don't real you know what this car with a little turbocharged petrol engine will feel really quite cool do you know what would be awesome a gr version one with the gr yar's engine that' be Wicked but no we don't have that well we don't have it yet but but Toyota definitely could do it do you know what a Ford pumo with its turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine has a slightly more Punchy feel to it if you want to check out my full inth video review of one of those click on the pop out banner up there Toyota says the 1.8 L version of the CHR will do not to 60 in 10.2 seconds but I'm going to find out for myself by using my specialist timing gear up here to launch it I'm going to use the hold function and then just floor the accelerator because I think if I press the foot brake and the accelerator together it'll have a bit of a fit and perform poorly 3 2 1 now I actually took off all right here we go what time are we going to get come on hey that's a not 60 9.8 seconds that's actually all right however I think I'd like a bit of extra punch and if it was me and I was buying a CHR I'd pay the extra for the 2 L version I just water so then what's my final verdict on the new Toyota CHR should you avoid it should you consider it should you short list it or should you just go right ahead and buy it well I reckon you should short list the CHR looks good dri nice and it's more practical than it was before even though it's not quite perfect it does have that I want it Vibe about it if you enjoyed the video please give it a like it really helps us out and let me know what you think of my verdict on this car in the comments below if you click on the video Windows you can watch some more videos and
