The BMW M8 Competition Coupe is the Fastest and Most Expensive BMW I've Driven - Two Takes
The Author's Experience with the BMW 8 Series
The author had the opportunity to drive the BMW 8 Series and was thoroughly impressed with its performance. The car's handling was exceptional, especially on smooth roads such as tarmac, where it felt comfortable and confident. However, when driving through rough terrain, such as canyons, the author found that the car struggled to separate body control from suspension, which could be a concern for drivers who prefer more precise handling.
One of the things that impressed the author was the car's ability to dance on the road, even at high speeds. This was particularly noticeable in the city, where the car's performance was more pronounced than the M4. The author noted that the power band of the 8 Series was much more impressive than the M4, with a more linear delivery and less lag. In contrast, the M4 felt like it was "spiking" through its gears, lacking the smoothness and refinement of the 8 Series.
Despite its many strengths, the author did have some criticisms of the car. One of the most annoying features was the shut-off process for the infotainment system, which seemed to be more complicated than necessary. The author found that pressing a single button would not fully shut off the system, and that it took a deliberate action to ensure that all screens went black.
Another issue the author had was with the interior design of the car. They noted that some features, such as the radio station display, were difficult to read due to thin backlighting and glare from surrounding surfaces. This made it hard for the author to navigate the menu system, which they found to be deep and complex.
The author also took note of a few other quirks and observations while driving the 8 Series. They noted that the car was remarkably quiet inside, thanks in part to its advanced soundproofing technology. However, they also commented on the weight of the car, which felt like an extra 800 pounds when unloaded. Despite this, the author found that the car's performance was more than enough to justify its size and weight.
In conclusion, the BMW 8 Series is a remarkable car that offers exceptional performance and handling. While it has some quirks and imperfections, these are largely outweighed by its many strengths. The author was thoroughly impressed with the car's ability to dance on the road, its refinement and smoothness, and its sheer power and speed.
Asking Questions: The Author's Experience
The author had a number of questions for their BMW 8 Series test drive, including how it compared to other BMW models like the M4 and M8. They were curious about the car's performance in different driving situations, such as on the track versus on public roads. They also wanted to know more about the car's advanced technology features and how they worked.
The author was particularly interested in hearing from BMW representatives about their experiences with the 8 Series. They had some specific questions about the car's suspension system and how it handled rough terrain, as well as its performance capabilities on the track. The author also wanted to know more about the car's fuel efficiency and handling characteristics in different weather conditions.
Overall, the author's experience with the BMW 8 Series was one of excitement and enthusiasm. They were thoroughly impressed with the car's performance and handling, and they had many questions about its technology features and capabilities.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enyou know guys in my career I have found myself on the side of the road with lights flashing in my mirror dozens of times sometimes I had it coming but more often than not I was just doing what you guys are probably doing every day going to work at a speed I found pretty reasonable did you know that one in five drivers get a ticket every single year but only 5% of drivers can test their tickets that means big business and big revenue for the police and the court system you're always better off fighting any ticket especially with the help of a professional but how do you find that professional especially if you get a ticket outside of your home city off the record fights tickets and misdemeanors for drivers all across the country when you book a case with off the record you're matched with an experienced local lawyer that handles your case from start to finish off the record has a 97% success rate and a money-back guarantee if they don't keep that ticket off your record do yourself a favor and always fight your tickets go to off the record calm / TST the link is in the video description or download the iOS and Android off-the-record app and enter code TST 10 do it now because the code will cover all your legal services through off the record for 3 whole years morning everybody Zack and I are up in the canyons today it is a great day to get out of town and we have to pick up his broken BMW on the way home so why not just have another one now it's fixed now it's fixed Mark Norris shotta this is the 2020 BMW m8 competition comes in three flavors coupe convertible and grand coupe 4-door they were all available I asked for the coupe I figured you guys would want that the deal on this thing obviously based on the new 8 Series which replaced the 6 Series Zack did about 1,500 miles in the 850 i M Sport and last year right extra so you have a see you've got a basis I haven't been in any of the eights this is my first one so 4.4 liter twin-turbo air to water intercooled 32 valve twin too nice a twin turbo twin turbo v8 617 horsepower 553 pounds of torque Compaq gives you an extra 17 horsepower it also gives you the 20-inch wheels on Pilot Sport for S tires gives you better ball joints on the rear suspension stiffer engine mounts and a realigned suspension that's an interesting combination of upgrades right yeah it's the kind of thing that only a factory package would give you absolutely right yeah it's not like oh yeah we just turned up the tune and you know put different wheels on it it's like very specific things that they adjust changing geometry a little bit right right right the car is all wheel drive but it has a selectable system like the m5 so you've got your full all-wheel drive your sport all-wheel drive and then you can go rear wheel drive which is frankly the dream that's that thing that's very cool if you're gonna make a car 4,400 pounds which is what this one weighs I want that kind of feature in it and let's see the 850 regular car gets a rear steering system which Zac used in his testing the M cars they delete that they prefer a pure steering feel so they delete that but that doesn't necessarily mean that what you're getting is pure what you are getting is manufactured based on an inordinate amount of inordinate that might not be the right word a lot of things you can adjust in the settings you can change the engine response the transmission response the suspension stiffness the steering weight the brake pressure on the pedal the DSC settings the all-wheel drive settings the start/stop settings and the exhaust pumped into the cabin settings all of that you can change with your modes and then program to your heart's content on the m-mode so we'll start an m1 which for me is what my most used mode it's a pizza in the comfort steering comfort suspension sporty engine response sporty gearbox response and then all-wheel drive sport so right we'll start with that we will head up the hill there we go other than those cyclists are just right here so that will be easy let me tell you something as fast as real men bMW says zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds and a quarter-mile in the tens that's from a forty four hundred pound vehicle as I own that is very fast and I bet you that that's not even its best metric I bet you it's best metric is the sixty to one sixty oh yeah cuz even the old m6 i I allegedly had a very high speed street race against a Ferrari 458 spider and the m6 is just as fast the form of a spider and these things are highway miss soles and the power is crazy it's a super flat torque curve the automatic gearbox has been programmed beautifully whatever BMW did from the m5 I drove last of this is staggeringly good low is that low is the m5 doing that you did like it just felt so much more torque and murdery and not as like snappy cousin it was way more slushy I mean like Eco mode like regular just turn it on and drive to the grocery store mode the gear changes are both more precise and smoother you have to mean there wasn't like this weird delay where you're moving between here right now the m5 was a little more numb and distant this one me the other good good this one they really ratchet up the engagement as high as they can I think is it still dizzy Fe ah yes but it's got its own programming and they I don't know what they've done but they have they have figured pilot super sports are are usually pious or fluoresces are good so now this road is very smooth right we're off the bumpy big Tujunga so I'm gonna go into m2 we're now in rear wheel drive mode we are now in traction control off and the suspension is at its firmest and you can customize each of the M modes for whatever you want oh yeah so if you want super stiff suspension and lays the engine response with traction offer him you know effect p.m. - it's so customizable which balls doing heaven like a daunting degree let me pull up the menu it's like what what setting would you like the headrest and the mirror in right and to like I don't know I we're talking about this on the way up here if you were to go to a dealer and buy one knew that the delivery process would probably take hours yeah where they show you to do this and and one of the hard things about this if there's lifted truck kind of mobbing for what it is for y'all one of the things let me have this thought about testing cars during coronavirus is that we have fewer places to drive the cars and so these very complicated cars it's hard to actually get into every little thing with them you know if it's a if it's a fairly straightforward simple car here's how it is and you can experience it but like when someone says to me well how is the m6 and you go what mode is it in oh it's got shift lights that come up in the center I didn't notice that when you get close to the 70 but that's 7400 looks like red line oh yeah you get some chef lights in the middle it's a pretty high red line and I had to say so far although I can feel the size and the heft I'm pretty impressed this is a shockingly competent I can't use the word shockingly it's 175 grand well I think what you're saying is it probably feels a little lighter on it to me than you think from inspection in the design info it's a very large looking April it is a big people but you walk up to it it doesn't look like it's gonna slice and dice this gideon's like this right and I'm the whole time I've had it really really like whoa whoa that was a bobbing shrub guy with like oversteer you know I'm gonna work track he's late for work uh what do you want you want to get the sound get the cabin the the tunnel sound here oh and then we can talk about the windows the windows how they don't buffer how they don't lock the windows don't buff it because of a special mirror design okay marble tune you're the second gear Pole Wow I had to say in the four point something litre twin-turbo v-8 space that is a totally unique sound yeah doesn't sound not as angry as the the Mercedes no and not also more anger than the Audi not as hot as the Porsche Oh more powerful you know 150 more horsepower of course but not as loud yeah not as lavish I mean it's you know what it kind of smart it sounds like the default Gran Turismo engine so when you verbally put a travesty a cardiac injuries the fault engine engine kind of more noise but to the mirrors they have these weird little fingers that stick up off the corner and I was commenting on the way up there they look very strange but if you put one window down you don't have it I don't back but look it doesn't buff it which is either Jimmy Buffett I hate Jimmy Buffett is there we go so here we're driving one window down totally pleasant beyond the highway 65 70 miles an hour one window down told it's something I don't mention a lot in these reviews because I'm driving around with the windows up and so it just doesn't come up but when I use the cars in my life 99 1 Porsches are a great example of the fact that I don't really talk about that in the reviews of those cars but every time I've driven one for more than a couple days I go this wind buffeting right it sucks you're you're here out of the window yeah how's it behind you apparently that is a cheap fix for that but turning on to the open road the power is extraordinary so here's a fun stat the BMW 850 i from 1991 okay I hold this whole time I've had this car I've been thinking about all cars and so big as big and heavy blah blah blah blah I looked it up this car is 9% heavier than the 1991 eight fifty nine percent heavier right but it is 100 percent more powerful Wow and the quarter mile time how the quarter-mile time between the 1991 850 and this has been reduced by 30% the 91 850 ran a 13-9 this runs I'm sorry using a 14-9 there at a 14-9 quarter-mile this runs a 10-8 that's like that's like someone's football stats from when they were 20 I know when they're like that's why I'm here you're twice as fast what are all these folks running they have a radio thinking they have radios and that's why maybe we should abandon I mean there's a thing there's someone I'm doing a thing you settled on fire I know where it's the weirdest marathon I've ever seen very very strange keep an extra eye out but it feels like here's my my biggest issue with the car is that for its extra size and heft it doesn't really hold anything than an m4 doesn't hold you know what I mean yeah I'm gonna get another inch of length legroom yeah home or inch of trunk space I mean I'm sure this Bexar silently then a little extra shoulder room as well but fundamentally you're still holding two and then two children you know yeah and to that we get suitcases menagerie if they're originally nice hell don't even see that's the way to think of cars these days everything grows a little bit like we were looking under the hood and like wow the engine is set like a full almost two feet back from the bumper like what is happening in that space yeah well it's because the headlight mechanism and the whole headlight itself is almost this long it's almost a foot long so if you tried to move that back there now sitting in the air intake and so every piece of a car has gotten bigger plus there so you know frontal crash area rules that have to be in here too and why are you having are that here that he is much larger you know really you don't get that much space do other things it's real real fast right it really high it must be like the sound deadening it's I know and especially like my default thought would be like oh that's cuz the rear steer but it doesn't have I'm scared so that's that's kind of interesting right just like the shear grip and chassis control wow that's the president yeah to garden comfort steering which I think bringing communications in Plaquemine bobbing is really easy to go it's really easy to go fast this is a tight section with some cars but this is making him feel lots more stretched out yeah the body control is really good yeah it's actually looking down and trying to figure out it's hard to read the gays are hard to read hi hi this vido even the big digital LEDs up right now his position like down into the left and looking over at the replacement of the analog is basically possible the fonts too small in that radius I guess it would because it's like yeah I got hexagons are like so hot right now not a part of the Horace on down all about them hexaco fantastic is super fast super stable there's no reason to believe that it's not totally composed even end of what art by all accounts pretty absurd numbers it's really quite in here very very this is good GT cart work very isolated in waves of wanna be isolated yeah but to move through the world in ignore yeah way to owning the world I would I would love to go cross country and something like this bag of the day I went through my one of my first time maybe I'd know my second time going cross country was in a 2007 m6 and it was fantastic with me 10 it was great and this same thing I'd love to do 25 20 mile and these seats are far superior to the 850 I drove which were way to stuff to her and really get comfortable in them and so doing that one to three thousand miles in his bar would be a lot more man it does do it really defies its weight I mean I've driven a few cars recently that were up in the 4000 pound range these sort of fast GT sedans and and this one I think this is the most agile one yet huh which it it it kind of needs to be this boat we're talking about all the way up is that the competition you're not that far from like a Porsche Turbo right now Turbo S starts at 203 this thing's it like 185 so this is 140 whoa in the burnout 145 base 175 has tested this one has a $5,000 paint job $9,000 breaks the $5,000 mm drivers package which I don't even know what that is it's not even really listed it's got a few different things that are the tech pack in the you know or add stuff the ceramic brakes if you're gonna drive like this at a forty four hundred pound car I'd probably say get damaged you don't always need but these never need to be the brakes yeah I think it's just I know the pricing can vary a lot but it's like the company it's in and your brain near you're a Porsche fan so like that's that's the peak of GT drivers brush right and the fact that this is not way more all from it is a very good thing because there that's not true of all the cars in this class some are really not that great when you start going real fast with words dynamically I prefer this to either of the Aston Martin's on sale right back right that's usually the problem with the front-engine cars is stiffness and by the way for about 30 seconds ago I put it back into m1 with the comfort suspension and the four-wheel drive on but the problem most frontage and cares' is the stiffness this manages to be not that stiff except on the sharpest of of yumps and in the end in the tightest of modes I like that in comfort mode because what we're in right now it doesn't really feel like I've lost performance no it's not sloppy you know a few years ago comfort meant it would be sort of sloppy like an old town car is that a condom after oh my god I just had a heart attack that's so green up here today isn't it had a lot of rain yeah they've gotten really good it separating body control from extra right and I know it's all part of the same system but cars not very good at that I'll tell you what I would drive this through the canyons in comfort suspension I don't see the need for the other modes I mean maybe at the track or something a stopwatch you can't tell the difference but I think comfort mode through this Canyon right here is fantastic this is a fairly smooth road in terms of tarmac yeah there are a lot of them you know little things underneath it especially as you start to get up to speed and in sport we would be yeah overall I like this car a lot let you do three it's big and it's heavy yes but there is room in the world for a big heavy GT car especially when it can dance like this I think it offers performance that it does live up to the price tag oh yeah when you drive it around town in the city and you go oh my god this thing is 175 thousand dollars and you go where did that money go over the m4 cuz if you're not going fast you know but then you go oh this this power is you know in the m4 is a very fast car but this powers is definitely a class you have that and the power band I prefer wave much over the m4 oh where you don't get that massive turbo shove it's just hello McLaren yeah then poor is just a spike of Tauride right way too low right and so you know oh I have I have some downsides I wrote some notes of things that were bugging me about the car which I want to I want to get off my chest before we got here Oh mobbing the 308 Wow oh it's a good day to be here the shut off process of a BMW still stinks sorry you press this button off process yeah because you press the button once and now all these screens are still on you don't know yeah if it's off even if I open the door the screens are still on I remember my present again no but if I hold it it goes black I think if you get out of the car and lock it yeah turns off but I know exactly I mean it's very good disconcerting it's disconcerting is the right word you have to it's the only car I've ever driven where you have to actually be trained on how to turn it off which is weird okay and you can probably adjust how you want to turn gas there also the menu items on the multimedia system are lit up by a red rectangle that's very thin and if there's any kind of Sun behind it to the side it's impossible to read I have no idea what radio station I'm on I there might be a way in here to change the color but the menus are deep no idea let me know in the comments if there's a way to change that color it's not colorblind friendly and then some I wrote this somehow is bigger and has less space inside than M 4 M 8 is 7 inches longer than M 4 but only one inch more wheelbase so the cabin size limited has a hundred and eighty more horsepower but is 800 pounds heavier and that that difference is a fast motorcycle yes we're fine sorry just liked it we're good thank you sorry thanks yeah it's good nice alpha I love them so much alright so should we pick him up only down one so yeah I mean I think it's it has its imperfections it's it is very expensive but man it's a good time very good time alright so thanks to BMW for letting us have a go for a week thanks to Zach for joining me thanks to you for watching we'll see you later these guys doing donuts is 308 yeah you think you've rented it no yeah yeah that was awesome bender yeah this guy was getting at in this three away I think as an experience other than you know all the controls and the problems this has with interior design like this is the experience I want from a GT car especially a front-engine one I mean it's quiet it's comfortable but it's fast and it I feel really like comfortable and confident driving it quickly in the corners I do everything yeah you know this dude is painting that 308 yeah this is impressive like I'm not going you know it's like what there's a 308 in front of you it's we gotta beat that guy watching some like factory driver yeah dude it's like if you guys like bobbing dude this is like wow I knew besides you within this the right scene right no they would be nervous and besides me dude this guy's is ripping this 308 and remember always fight your tickets go to off the record dot-com slash TST or use code TST 10 on the off the record appyou know guys in my career I have found myself on the side of a little bit like we were looking under the hood and like wow the engine is set like a full almost two feet back from the bumper like what is happening in that space yeah well it's because the headlight mechanism and the whole headlight itself is almost this long it's almost a foot long so if you tried to move that back there now sitting in the air intake and so every piece of a car has gotten bigger plus there so you know frontal crash area rules that have to be in here too and why are you having are that here that he is much larger you know really you don't get that much space do other things it's real real fast right it really high it must be like the sound deadening it's I know and especially like my default thought would be like oh that's cuz the rear steer but it doesn't have I'm scared so that's that's kind of interesting right just like the shear grip and chassis control wow that's the president yeah to garden comfort steering which I think bringing communications in Plaquemine bobbing is really easy to go it's really easy to go fast this is a tight section with some cars but this is making him feel lots more stretched out yeah the body control is really good yeah it's actually looking down and trying to figure out it's hard to read the gays are hard to read hi hi this vido even the big digital LEDs up right now his position like down into the left and looking over at the replacement of the analog is basically possible the fonts too small in that radius I guess it would because it's like yeah I got hexagons are like so hot right now not a part of the Horace on down all about them hexaco fantastic is super fast super stable there's no reason to believe that it's not totally composed even end of what art by all accounts pretty absurd numbers it's really quite in here very very this is good GT cart work very isolated in waves of wanna be isolated yeah but to move through the world in ignore yeah way to owning the world I would I would love to go cross country and something like this bag of the day I went through my one of my first time maybe I'd know my second time going cross country was in a 2007 m6 and it was fantastic with me 10 it was great and this same thing I'd love to do 25 20 mile and these seats are far superior to the 850 I drove which were way to stuff to her and really get comfortable in them and so doing that one to three thousand miles in his bar would be a lot more man it does do it really defies its weight I mean I've driven a few cars recently that were up in the 4000 pound range these sort of fast GT sedans and and this one I think this is the most agile one yet huh which it it it kind of needs to be this boat we're talking about all the way up is that the competition you're not that far from like a Porsche Turbo right now Turbo S starts at 203 this thing's it like 185 so this is 140 whoa in the burnout 145 base 175 has tested this one has a $5,000 paint job $9,000 breaks the $5,000 mm drivers package which I don't even know what that is it's not even really listed it's got a few different things that are the tech pack in the you know or add stuff the ceramic brakes if you're gonna drive like this at a forty four hundred pound car I'd probably say get damaged you don't always need but these never need to be the brakes yeah I think it's just I know the pricing can vary a lot but it's like the company it's in and your brain near you're a Porsche fan so like that's that's the peak of GT drivers brush right and the fact that this is not way more all from it is a very good thing because there that's not true of all the cars in this class some are really not that great when you start going real fast with words dynamically I prefer this to either of the Aston Martin's on sale right back right that's usually the problem with the front-engine cars is stiffness and by the way for about 30 seconds ago I put it back into m1 with the comfort suspension and the four-wheel drive on but the problem most frontage and cares' is the stiffness this manages to be not that stiff except on the sharpest of of yumps and in the end in the tightest of modes I like that in comfort mode because what we're in right now it doesn't really feel like I've lost performance no it's not sloppy you know a few years ago comfort meant it would be sort of sloppy like an old town car is that a condom after oh my god I just had a heart attack that's so green up here today isn't it had a lot of rain yeah they've gotten really good it separating body control from extra right and I know it's all part of the same system but cars not very good at that I'll tell you what I would drive this through the canyons in comfort suspension I don't see the need for the other modes I mean maybe at the track or something a stopwatch you can't tell the difference but I think comfort mode through this Canyon right here is fantastic this is a fairly smooth road in terms of tarmac yeah there are a lot of them you know little things underneath it especially as you start to get up to speed and in sport we would be yeah overall I like this car a lot let you do three it's big and it's heavy yes but there is room in the world for a big heavy GT car especially when it can dance like this I think it offers performance that it does live up to the price tag oh yeah when you drive it around town in the city and you go oh my god this thing is 175 thousand dollars and you go where did that money go over the m4 cuz if you're not going fast you know but then you go oh this this power is you know in the m4 is a very fast car but this powers is definitely a class you have that and the power band I prefer wave much over the m4 oh where you don't get that massive turbo shove it's just hello McLaren yeah then poor is just a spike of Tauride right way too low right and so you know oh I have I have some downsides I wrote some notes of things that were bugging me about the car which I want to I want to get off my chest before we got here Oh mobbing the 308 Wow oh it's a good day to be here the shut off process of a BMW still stinks sorry you press this button off process yeah because you press the button once and now all these screens are still on you don't know yeah if it's off even if I open the door the screens are still on I remember my present again no but if I hold it it goes black I think if you get out of the car and lock it yeah turns off but I know exactly I mean it's very good disconcerting it's disconcerting is the right word you have to it's the only car I've ever driven where you have to actually be trained on how to turn it off which is weird okay and you can probably adjust how you want to turn gas there also the menu items on the multimedia system are lit up by a red rectangle that's very thin and if there's any kind of Sun behind it to the side it's impossible to read I have no idea what radio station I'm on I there might be a way in here to change the color but the menus are deep no idea let me know in the comments if there's a way to change that color it's not colorblind friendly and then some I wrote this somehow is bigger and has less space inside than M 4 M 8 is 7 inches longer than M 4 but only one inch more wheelbase so the cabin size limited has a hundred and eighty more horsepower but is 800 pounds heavier and that that difference is a fast motorcycle yes we're fine sorry just liked it we're good thank you sorry thanks yeah it's good nice alpha I love them so much alright so should we pick him up only down one so yeah I mean I think it's it has its imperfections it's it is very expensive but man it's a good time very good time alright so thanks to BMW for letting us have a go for a week thanks to Zach for joining me thanks to you for watching we'll see you later these guys doing donuts is 308 yeah you think you've rented it no yeah yeah that was awesome bender yeah this guy was getting at in this three away I think as an experience other than you know all the controls and the problems this has with interior design like this is the experience I want from a GT car especially a front-engine one I mean it's quiet it's comfortable but it's fast and it I feel really like comfortable and confident driving it quickly in the corners I do everything yeah you know this dude is painting that 308 yeah this is impressive like I'm not going you know it's like what there's a 308 in front of you it's we gotta beat that guy watching some like factory driver yeah dude it's like if you guys like bobbing dude this is like wow I knew besides you within this the right scene right no they would be nervous and besides me dude this guy's is ripping this 308 and remember always fight your tickets go to off the record dot-com
