Here’s What Used Police Cars are Like in England

Show Off Sunday: A Look at the BMW 530F11 Estate

It's time for Show Off Sunday, where everyone has a chance to show off their car, and I'm excited to present this week's winner, thank you Scotty Kilmer for letting me show my car. Hello guys and girls, let me introduce you to the BMW 530F11 chassis, which is very different from your normal 5 Series salon that you get in North America. This one is a diesel-powered vehicle, specifically designed for police services in Europe directly from the factory. The car I'm showing off today is a 2012 model, with a 258 horsepower 6-cylinder inline turbo diesel engine, which accelerates from 0-60mph in just 5.8 seconds.

This BMW has added reinforcement on the chassis and around the body to provide enhanced protection in the event of a high-speed collision. These cars are very common in the UK, Europe, and Australia, and I'm told that station wagons in North America are slowly becoming rare due to the SUV market taking over. However, consumers will still buy them, and the normal 530 would retain a value of around £43,000 (approximately $55,000 USD). I bought this car in 2017 for around £8,000 (approximately $10,000 USD), which is a great example of how you can get some really good deals on these vehicles.

The logbook and title that I'm holding show that the car was previously owned by the police. When I bought it, it had around 120,000 miles on it with full service history by the police workshop who did full services every 10,000 miles. The car was like a motorway highway patrol car, so it's seen heavy use and has been well-maintained. Let's take a look at the interior of this car, which I had to do some modifications on when I bought it. The car originally came with cloth seats, but they were worn out and you could really feel the springs in there. So, I got some leather seats from a junkyard as you call it, and they were off another accident car that had around 35,000 miles.

The car has a standard 8-speed automatic gearbox, which can be shifted into sport mode using the paddle shifters. This is great because of the high mileage that the police workshops did on the car, where oil changes were done every 10,000 miles. I asked BMW and they said it was lifetime, so we don't change it. I contacted the manufacturer in Germany and took the car there, and they stripped and serviced the gearbox, changed the oil, and cleaned everything out in about 4 hours.

One of the benefits of this split tailgate is that you can open the glass separately, which is really convenient for storing items like timber or larger items from IKEA. When I'm taking this car to Scotland or Belgium or Germany, and if space is required, I can always put a roof box on top. The battery is located under the floor, so I put some timbers in there just so that if I was carrying anything heavy it wouldn't go down.

The auxiliary battery is located here, which is only found on police cars, as they tend to have this feature more often than civilian vehicles. Overall, I think this car is a great value for the money and has been well-maintained despite its high mileage. The problem is that you get high mileage but if it's been maintained well then you know it should go on for many more years. I've had no issues with this car apart from just regular servicing, which is why I would recommend buying one.

This car is a luxurious ride and is really good on diesel and fuel economy is pretty good for the size of the engine and the size of the vehicle as well. The eco mode, comfort mode, and sports mode are generally available because it's a diesel you get greater range. In town, I would get around 550 miles per tank, which is a 70-liter tank. On the highway or motorway, I'd get maybe 620-650 miles per tank, so it's pretty good on economy. With its split tailgate and glass opening by itself, this car has a lot of benefits for storing items and providing a luxurious ride.
