A Track Day with Mighty Car Mods
The team at Mighty Car Mods recently took their Subaru STI to the track for a day of testing and fine-tuning. However, things didn't go exactly as planned. The car was slower than expected, leading the team to suspect that something was amiss.

brz the brz i got to know it so well and i've never driven this car hard before so it's um yeah it's all new and all scary i'm not going to try and get a really good time i just want to go and get a better feel for it because i'm not it sounds really wanky i'm just not in tune with the car yet so i just want to get an experience of um of that thank you mate the other tricky thing because this is an advanced day everyone's going fast i'm nervous but i'm also excited so let's see how we go today do a nice easy lap get the car warmed up get me warmed up get the tyres warmed up it's quite a different experience being in a harness as well look at this thing going past look at that that is ridiculous you know even though i'm not going that fast yet i can really feel a similarity with my experience with the brs8 in terms of just kind of getting a feel of what a race car is meant to be like and so i think that's a great um you know like that's that's a great thing for brzeds and you know for them making them because it does really give you this feel obviously it's going to be a little bit different once i'm driving on the limit um but right now it's feeling really good that's 195 on the brakes a nice squeeze really hanging on in that corner getting chopped by an evo excellent the brakes are incredible i think i need to use the brakes a bit more actually really go longer into the corner and on the brakes whoa oh that was almost enough well that was a very humbling experience 186 so much less speed than the vrz let's see if i can make up some time now in these corners maybe i can wind up the gears more too maybe that's the other mistake i just need to be really revving the pants a little this is what driving purity is it is damn scary around onto the street 159 that's as good as i'm going to get today five seconds slower than the brzad i don't know what's going on i really don't i just can't seem to quite get in touch with this purity it's pure i'm not i don't know i just can't quite seem to grab it it's like when there's a tune in your head and you can't quite work out what it is it's like that but it's a feel thing and you know i always hated it when journalists talk about a field thing and i know with lotus some people either get it i don't get it i understand it conceptually i just i just can't feel it meanwhile this was what was happening in my car let's go ah rexy always feels so good i have one lap to feel the track get tires warm but not too warm because i am on road tires still not semi's not too sexy type tyres and so the first lap i'm not going to pull any kind of interesting time but what is going to happen is everything's going to get warm and by the second or third lap that's most likely when my tires are going to be at their best so that's when i want to be really trying to get a good time so i've got my various track timers on to sort of test out and see what happens some wild cars on the track today crossbow ktm things all sorts of lotuses my good friend in front of me and his lotus i'm really interested to see how that goes today rexy feels really nice and solid and planted ever since we got those sway bars dialed in perfectly it just drives great and really a set of semi-slicks would be the next step and i reckon that's probably what i'll do next after i've sort of locked in that this is the kind of time i'm gonna get it's a nice cool day the sun is out so the track will get hot later but it's feeling pretty good now not too much traffic either there's a lot of fast cars around but uh we're not tangled up in them so that's a good thing too cars starting to feel real good all right i'm going to be getting into it this lap here we go across the start line to begin says my timer now we're into it other lotus is fast really fast rexy feels great a bit of traffic evo's puff and smoke nothing unusual there i would hazard a guest to say my sti is probably considerably easier to drive than that lotus the lotus is going to be fast but this is his first time on the track so he'll still be getting used to it this is what my tires are at their best there's a bit too much traffic to be able to do any kind of pb here deep whoa there he goes big spin big spin nothing hit him he's all right i'm going to get out of the way probably the best thing i can do at the moment try not to do the same thing myself although the full drive car i definitely have a bit of an advantage there of just it handling like a road car rather than a track car so here we go just a revision mirror full of low tie car's feeling good this is where my tires are at the best so i'm just going to have to try and punch out a hot lap now if lotus is trying to get past me they probably will that's fine see you boys oh they sound great here we go this is the lap that matters i just did i didn't think i'd be able to hang on during that corner but once you get the grip in the mid corner confidence you get back into it i just need to slow down heaps more for this corner than i think i do and not miss a gear that helps too come on car turn turn turn turn turn here we go doing all right doing all right yeah lock it in that's the way nice and quick through there not too much speed not too much speed fast to the corner slow down for the corner let the car settle get into it yeah feeling good i don't know that this is going to be any kind of personal best but let's go deep into there slow down for the corner actually get the grip come on use the four wheel drive to get me around the corner like that grab it to eight grand sorry little ej20 fast break at the 50 meter line back into third come on just wrong gear for that corner it's all right get back on the power here we go just takes too long to make up that speed if you don't get that corner just right ah i'm doing that corner wrong i'm putting up too much speed at the end back onto the straight 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 not bad you can hear like funny noises which is never a good thing this is what not what any subaru person wants to hear yeah something you can hear some sort of noise that seems to come and go with revs that's a nice looking evo just like when i had ones except i didn't i can hear a noise this is the age-old question do you stay into it when it's noisy the answer is no you don't because it is making a ticking noise no she's making a ticking noise people i'm going in can hear it she's making a ticking noise could be something simple but in any subaru ticking noise not the best i may have done a personal best i may have best 156 yeah that might be that might be up there oh oh no um knock knock who's there you all know who's there yeah i've killed it oh might be getting a tow truck home everybody actually i'm pretty much certain of that that will be getting a tow truck home i'm going to pull up not in the lotus garage because it's mildly embarrassing that my car blew up well that was a lot of fun and i'm pretty sure i did a personal best so one of the biggest problems with what just happened is that this is a wednesday on saturday i have one of the first night time track days booked to come back here and do a different circuit but at night under lights because they just put in like a couple million bucks worth of lights um now i have no subaru i don't have a car to take so i've got to tell him he's gonna he i don't know what he's gonna do hey mate hello that was scary did you see what happened i was behind you yeah then my car didn't start i just turned the alarm off because i don't want that to get in the way of what you're about to experience okay give it a rev man is it knocking give it a rev is that rodney i need you to hear it i'm a bit sad because this car's been so amazing i think i might have over revved it which didn't help but also i've done all these track days and this is like not uncommon for subarus are you a bit i'm a little bit sad just a little bit because your car's broken and my confidence is broken i did a two minute lap that was my best lap is it hard to drive vrz was 154 hard to drive first time out just sideways around all yeah and i know so i don't know what's going on because i know everyone says you great know lotus like turn two back comes out i'm fighting for it you can see yeah i saw you it's like i was behind it other ones like slides out and so it just the back end comes around and it's funny because i was just chatting with the lotus techs and they're like not meant to do that this car seems so familiar because i've just driven it so many times but also i can't go faster so my best time was 0.03 slower than my other best time like the same zero what did you get 56 156.17 okay and my best is 56.14 okay so that's it that's as fast as it's ever going to go and it's still four seconds faster than i went yeah but it's the same time in the same lap like it's it's not going to change but um yeah this so this is this is peaked out in terms of what i'm going to get from its current setup particularly now the motor's making rod knocking yes okay so i don't know what to do i guess i'll work it out this is this is the game we play isn't it yes race tracks but the good thing is we actually spoke in the last video about shannon's roadside and we're like i know we probably have that clip still where like if something happens at a track they'll take your car away and you need to be related that's awesome so thank you shannon's roadside they're coming to pick it up i was kind of hoping i didn't wouldn't have to use it and here i am but uh yeah i mean if only there was another blue track car with two doors yeah except that one doesn't work either martin there's something about driving on that look that's been a focus for us this year we you know there's always nuggets but sometimes we try and do some euros sometimes we do some other things and this year for us has been a real focus on the track yeah it's been fun and scary and it breaks it was it was another expensive day educational day i learned about bearing failure rod knock yep all those really fun things that subaru owners do sometimes experience it's a thing and i learned about spinning out at quite some speed and then looking out my window and seeing a lot of cars driving at me very fast but then swerving around i was going 80 k's are an hour around a corner and you are pointed this way at me halfway through a spin it was crazy it it meant it hit my confidence it really did because in the brz i could i could literally hang on to the rugged again like after that i i just felt really like i don't know like i couldn't get a fast speed or whatever but it's a the maths isn't right oh no so i'm going to take ownership for my own failings that no doubt you'll see in the comments but also some there's no way no it's not a lotus that cost 150 grand originally is the same no it's slower than a naturally aspirated brz yes not possible no there's something up with the car it's probably set up with what we've learned from doing these kind of track videos that the perfect example is when i took the sti to the track with the incorrect settings on the front sway bar i was seconds off the pace of what that car should do now it's sorted i can go two three four seconds quicker with one tiny change so chances are there's going to be tyres alignment i mean make sure it's actually making the power do that yeah apparently it's really high i found out since as well like around 30 millimeter higher than it's meant to be oh well um as well you know which is weird so maybe previous only that you know who knows there's lots of mysteries but yes we're gonna set it up properly where i'm gonna take it to the dyno and actually like just see what kind of power it's making compared to what it's meant to be making then we'll explore further and then there's gonna be more power coming of course because i i need the car to hit the hammer oh yeah to hit the nail yeah it has to hit the nail on the head it needs to be the hammer you probably saw as well um in my in-car footage that we were running the garmin catalyst which is this thing um which is like a track improver so you take it to the track and you can put in a bunch of um you know it basically tracks via very very accurate gps it has all tracks pre-loaded into it there'll be videos on that which is more about this yeah that there's um there's a bunch of things that it does that's really interesting so we're going to cover a bit more of that he has onboard footage and stuff like that too so that's been very interesting garmin you may have heard by now um they've come on board as a sponsor of mighty car mods which is freaking awesome probably because they saw your watch that you're always wearing all the time and yeah with all the with all the track stuff that we were doing accurate accurate timing is pretty cool especially on a day like that it's not a race day like it doesn't have all the you know nationally accredited timing stuff because it's not a competition it's your own you against the clock so that's a very highly accurate clock that's very easy to run martin yes your wrx that you call an sti is now blown up yeah should we just fix it and sell it now i don't know um but luckily i have backup subaru every subaru needs a backup subaru backup
