The New Sony RX100 Mark 7: A Game-Changer for Vloggers
As a long-time fan of the Sony RX series, I was excited to get my hands on the new Sony RX100 Mark 7. What sets this camera apart from its predecessors is the addition of a microphone input jack, which has been a game-changer for vloggers like me who want to take their audio to the next level.
Experimenting with Microphones
I've been experimenting with various microphones over the past few weeks, and I'm happy to report that this little $25 microphone from Amazon is a great find. The TRS microphones have worked really well for me, and those are the ones with only one small ring. There are many different versions of 3.5 millimeter jacks out there, so it's essential to make sure you're searching for TRS or you'll need to use some sort of adapter.
Testing the Microphone
Now that I've plugged in this microphone, let's see how it sounds. Jenna, can you say something? "Hello, how are you doing today?" That's what Jenna sounds like when she's behind the camera. I'm actually in front of the camera, so let me try again. Hello, Jenna is behind the camera. Okay, now that we've got the microphone plugged in, it looks so silly because it's so small and tiny but it's perfect for having a compact look without any mounts.
The Benefits of Using an External Microphone
One of the coolest things about this microphone is that you can do one of these flips up to switch between Jenna talking and me holding on. It's also great if you're behind the camera, as you can simply flip it over to listen in. Let's test this out now. I'll go ahead and say something, but hold on a second because you can use the microphone while I'm speaking. "Hello, Jenna." Now let's flip the end of the microphone to hear what Jenna has to say. This is just a long microphone that's one of the Senheiser microphones.
Using the TRS Microphone for Vlogging
I've been using this TRS microphone with my Sony RX100 Mark 7 camera, and it's incredible. The microphone works perfectly with the TRS input, and there are many different versions of 3.5 millimeter jacks out there. Not all of them will work, so it might take some trial and error to find the right one for your needs. However, for simple vlogging, this microphone is perfect.
The Limitations of the Microphone
While this microphone has been a game-changer for my vlogging, I don't think it's the best option for everyday use. It's not very durable, and it's also quite small, which can make it difficult to mount properly. However, when you're behind the camera or need a compact look, it works beautifully.
Adjusting Audio Levels
One of the features that sets this microphone apart is the ability to adjust audio levels. When I'm speaking into the microphone, I don't want it to peak. By adjusting the level, I can ensure that my voice sounds clear and crisp on camera. In fact, I've found that setting the level to 15 works perfectly for me.
Conclusion
The new Sony RX100 Mark 7 is a fantastic vlogging camera that has taken my vlogging to the next level. The addition of a microphone input jack has made it possible for me to create high-quality audio without having to spend hundreds of dollars on separate microphones. By experimenting with different microphones and learning how to use them properly, I've been able to achieve professional-sounding audio without breaking the bank.
