AMD's New Budget Mobile APU Looks A lot Like The Steam Decks APU, RDNA 2 + Zen 2

Recently, AMD's keynote at Computex 2022 was a great event that showcased some amazing new products from the company. The focus of this keynote was mainly on their new 7000 series desktop CPUs, which looked absolutely stunning. It was also a significant opportunity for AMD to discuss their 6000 series mobile APUs, which were released or announced in over 70 different devices.

One aspect that really caught my eye during this keynote was AMD's new upcoming budget APUs. These new chips are based on Zen 2 cores but paired up with RDNA 2 graphics. Specifically, these APUs will have four CPU cores and eight threads, backed by an RDNA IGPU. What makes these new APUs stand out is that they share a similar design to the APU used in the Steam Deck, which was also based on AMD's RDNA technology.

However, there are some notable differences between this new chip and the one used in the Steam Deck. The most significant difference is that this new APU will be based on six nanometer die, unlike the seven nanometer die of the Steam Deck. This smaller die size should result in a significant power reduction while maintaining performance.

It's also worth noting that AMD has decided to pair their Zen 2 cores with RDNA 2 graphics for these budget APUs. While it may seem counterintuitive at first, given that AMD's recent high-end desktop CPUs are based on Zen 4 cores, this design makes a lot of sense when considering the price point and performance expectations of these new APUs.

One of the most promising aspects of these new APUs is their expected battery life. According to AMD, these chips will provide around 10 hours of mixed usage battery life. This is a significant improvement over previous generations of APUs and should make them an attractive option for mainstream notebooks and Chromebooks.

AMD has also announced that these new APUs will be available in laptops and Chromebooks priced between $399 and $699, depending on the specific configuration. With their expected performance, battery life, and price point, it's no wonder why AMD is excited to bring these chips to market.

Unfortunately, the keynote didn't provide much information on the exact number of CUs that will be used in this RDNA 2 IGPU or the clock speeds of the CPU side of things. However, based on previous announcements from AMD, it's likely that the performance of these APUs will be comparable to that of the Steam Deck APU.

One aspect that is still up for debate among fans and critics alike is whether AMD will stick with eight CUs in these new RDNA 2 IGPs or opt for a lower configuration. However, even if they choose to reduce the number of CUs, using DDR5 memory should result in some respectable performance numbers.

Overall, I'm extremely excited about the prospect of getting my hands on one of these new budget APUs and putting them through their paces. Seeing the comparison between this chip and what's currently available in the Steam Deck is also fascinating, as it suggests that AMD may be on its way to creating some very competitive products for laptops and Chromebooks.

AMD's decision to make RDNA 2 APUs available in more affordable devices is a significant development in the company's ongoing push to expand its market share. With these new chips, we can expect to see improved performance and battery life at lower price points than ever before. While there are still some unknowns regarding the specifics of these APUs, one thing is clear: AMD has made a bold move in trying to bring high-performance gaming capabilities to more budget-conscious buyers.

We will have to wait until the end of 2022 to get our hands on these new APUs and see how they perform in real-world scenarios. However, based on what we've seen so far, it's clear that AMD is committed to providing some exciting new products for gamers and enthusiasts alike. Whether or not these chips will be able to compete directly with NVIDIA's offerings remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: AMD has once again raised the bar in terms of performance and value.

we've got the new 7000 series desktop cpus which look absolutely amazing they talked a lot about the 6000 series mobile apus which are kind of out right now it's a little on the edge but over 70 different devices using the 6000 series have either been released or announced right now and that's all well and good but one thing that really caught my eye was their new upcoming budget apus now they're using zen2 cores but they've paired it up with rd a2 graphics and these are gonna have four cores eight threads backed by an rdna igpu and this is looking very similar to the apu that's being used in the steam deck but this one's going to be based on six nanometer the steam deck is based on a seven nanometer die and these new amd chips are code named mendocito i cannot wait to see what these things can do i completely understand that the cpu cores are still based on zen 2 and with the recent announcement at the same keynote of 7000 series which is based on zen 4 it might be seeming a little old but when you think about the price point and what these things are going to be going in this does make a lot of sense and they're talking 10 hours of mixed usage battery life and these are going to be in mainstream notebooks and chromebooks from 399 up to 6.99 based on six nanometer four core eight thread zen two with rd and a2 graphics now unfortunately at the time of the announcement they didn't release how many cus we were going to get with this rd and a2 igpu nor did they announce the clock speeds of the cpu side of things but i suspect it's gonna be on up there with the steam decks apu at least when it comes to clock speeds i'm really hoping they stick with eight cus with these rd and a2 igpus but even if they bring it down to six this is still going to be using ddr5 so there is a chance we could see some really decent performance out of these lower cost windows 11 and chromebook laptops and i can't wait to get my hands on one of these to test it out but i thought it was really interesting kind of you know seeing the comparison between this chip here and what's in the steam deck right now i'm not exactly sure if they're going to be using kind of the same exact thing but i got a feeling it's going to be really close and it's just really awesome to see these rdna 2 apus coming to cheaper laptops and chromebooks but that's going to wrap it up for this one i thought it was interesting enough to make a quick video on we will have to wait till the end of 2022 to get our hands on this but i'm definitely looking forward to it and let me know your thoughts in the comments below but that's it for this one like always thanks for watchingwhat's going on everybody it's eta prime this is going to be a quick one but recently we had amd's keynote
