**Creating a Nautical Garland**
To start, you'll need to gather your materials. This includes heavy-duty rope, canvas fabric, a measuring tape, a yard stick, and some paint. You'll also need a nautical flag chart that helps with designing your flags.
The first step is to cut your heavy-duty rope. You'll need 6 feet of rope for your garland, but you can actually cut 9 feet of it because you won't be using the extra length in any way. The important thing is to leave an extra 18 inches on either side, just in case.
Next, you'll need to make your flags with the canvas. Clear a space and roll out the canvas, making sure to mark two points at 6 and 10 inches apart where you'll draw your lines. You can either use scissors or draw the lines freehand. Repeat this process until you have all seven flags cut out.
Now that you have all of your flags cut out, it's time to consult your nautical flag chart. Print one out so you can see all the different designs and pick your favorites. I picked a bold colored flag with a fun design in the middle, but feel free to use this as a guide or come up with your own unique combinations.
To start painting your flags, bring over your paint and sponges. Pro tip: use painters tape to get really clean lines on your designs. Cut a full-width piece of tape that will go across the top of each flag, creating an area where you won't need any paint. Cut the tape to be 3/4 inch thick and place two pieces in an X shape in the center. Wrap the excess tape onto the back and repeat the process for each flag.
Now it's time to create your designs. For my first flag, I painted inside the taped diamond shape to create a cool design. Next, I made the alpha flag by taping off the stripes. Then, I made the delta flag by taping off the corners. After that, I made the X-ray flag by taping off the corners as well, but in this case, it was just one corner.
For my last flag, Victor, I taped off the perimeter of an X to create a unique design. To paint efficiently, use one color at a time and let each layer dry before moving on to the next. Start with red, then blue, and so on. Remove the tape from two flags that need a second layer of paint once they're dry.
**Finishing Touches**
Now it's time to cut your solid-colored flags and add them to the rope. Take two solid-colored flags and fold them in half at the 3-inch mark, then cut from there until you reach the outer point. Apply glue to the top of each flag and attach them to the rope, leaving 18 inches on either end to hang the garland.
Continue adding flags to the rope, leaving about 6 inches between each one. Once all the flags are secured, your nautical garland is complete. This garland will bring a beachy look to any space and can be used for parties or special events.

fit any theme that you're rocking today I'm going to make some pennant garlands that are inspired by vintage nautical Flags I'll be making several 6 feet long garlands but this is what you'll need for just one of them some heavyduty rope that looks kind of nautical some high quality acrylic paint in blue yellow and red some paint sponges scissors and fabric adhesive a measuring tape a yard stick and some canvas Fabric and then a nautical flag chart that helps with the design the first thing you're going to need to do is cut your heavy duty rope so I need 6 feet of my rope for my Garland so I'm actually going to cut 9 ft of it the important part is you need an extra 18 in on either side you won't have any penants there but it's just a little extra slack for hanging the first thing we're going to do is make our flags with the canvas so I'm going to clear this space and roll it out we'll need seven flags that measure 6 by 10 in make a little Mark and then another Mark at 10 in and then you can certainly draw the lines out if you want or you can eyeball it and use your scissors okay now we have our first two pennants and we're going to continue to cut until we have all seven of them done now that we have all of our flags cut it's time to consult our nautical flag chart so I printed one out so I could see all the different designs that they have and then I picked my favorites and I drew this very fashionable design to show what I wanted to create later I just picked a really cool bold colored flag to put in the middle and I sort of worked my way out obviously go with whatever design and combination that you like best or feel free to use this as a general guide we're ready to start painting our flags so I'm bringing over my paint and sponges and here's my Pro tip for anytime you need to paint and get really clean lines use some painters tape because it achieves just that to make our first pennant first we need one full width piece of tape that's going to go across the top that's going to be the area where we don't need any paint we'll actually be folding that over to attach it to the Rope later then you're going to cut your tape to be 3/4 of an inch thick and we're going to place two pieces making an X right in the center so wrap the excess tape onto the back so we taped the top again and now we're going to create a diamond shape in the middle so we're going to measure each exposed untaped side and make a little Mark right in the middle I'll paint inside the taped Diamond to create the design for the fox TR nautical flag Ulta is our next pendant flag and again we're taping across the top and no need to tape anywhere else we'll just be painting the whole thing and then cutting it into the cool little mountain peak shape next up I'm making the alpha flag now I'm taping out the stripes for the Delta flag next I'm taping off the corners for the X-ray flag lastly I'm taping the perimeter of an X for the Victor flag now it's time to paint the most efficient way to paint these is to do one color at a time use a small brush and paint wherever red is now we're moving on to Blue now that these are dry I'm going to take the tape off of the two flags that need a second layer of paint so this guy Delta needs the side pieces of tape taken off and then going to P the stripes yellow you'll use the straight edge of the paintbrush to get right up to that line and then you can freehand the parts that aren't touching the prepainted line so we're going to let this guy dry and come back over to our first flag Victor and take off the tape around the first stripe that we painted and then we'll put down some tape for the second stripe so once again we take a strip painters tape and put it down here and then a second strip all right let that guy dry a little bit and then we'll remove the tape and he'll be finished now for the finishing touches we're going to cut our two solid color flags and then put them all onto the Rope take your two solid
