The Art of Roll Racing: A BMW E36's Turbocharged Adventure
As we take a closer look at the world of roll racing, one car stands out from the rest - a 1998 BMW E36 with a fully built S50 crank and precision turbo. The owner, who has been driving this car since he was 18 years old, has put in countless hours to fine-tune its performance, and it shows. With a dyno reading of 934 horsepower at 27.8 pounds, this car is ready to take on the competition.
The Car's Origins
This BMW E36 has a rich history, having been driven by its owner since he was just 18 years old. The car's original paint job still lingers, save for the replacement bumper - a testament to its age and dedication. The odometer reads in excess of 170,000 miles, making it one of the most seasoned cars on the track.
The Engine: A Small-Bore Marvel
Under the hood lies a small-bore motor with a ported head from Newcomer Racing. The engine is paired with a four-inch exhaust system and a precision turbocharger, providing the necessary boost to propel this car forward. The owner has opted for a fully built S50 crank, ensuring that every component works in harmony to deliver maximum performance.
DCT Swap: A Game-Changer
In an effort to maximize efficiency and power, the owner has swapped out the traditional manual transmission for a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). This system allows for lightning-fast shifting and improved acceleration. The pedal shifters provide a tactile experience that complements the car's turbocharged capabilities.
Turbocharged Bliss: A Paddle-Shifter Experience
The DCT setup is paired with paddle shifters, allowing the owner to seamlessly transition between gears without breaking a sweat. This system has not only increased the car's acceleration but also improved its overall driving experience. The owner confesses that this combination has made him feel 100 horsepower faster than when using a manual transmission.
First Test Pass: A Bumpy Ride
The first test pass was marked by a few mishaps, with the owner struggling to get the car to break boost. Despite some initial setbacks, he managed to coax it into shape, albeit slowly. The car's performance was impressive, but it took some time for the owner to get accustomed to its unique characteristics.
Elimination and Second Chances
Despite facing early challenges, the owner persevered, determined to make it through the competition. His perseverance paid off in the form of a few successful test passes, putting him on track with other competitors. As he navigated the course, he carefully tuned his boost levels to avoid overheating the clutches.
Pairing Up: Daytona and BMW E36
The owner's second chance was paired with another formidable competitor - the Daytona. The air support from this car was a welcome relief for our driver. He hoped that the giant wing would remain intact while racing, allowing him to secure his spot in the competition.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enoh yeah that looks good gonna be doing some roll racing today at streetcar takeover i'm doing the 150 class okay so that means this car's making some power my highest i put on the dyno was 934 and 851 at 27.8 pounds and i have a setting above it i just never dynamed it to get an actual number no reason to blow it up on the dyno yeah no right it's a really clean install that's really good i've been in this car since i was 18 years old oh seriously 42. wow that many miles on it it's got a 100 i think 170 on the odometer dang it doesn't look like 170 000 car it's original paint other than the really the bumper the that that's impressive so what's the combo you got going on the car so i've got a fully built s50 crank small bore motor with a uh it's a ported head from newcomer racing 7275 gen 2 precision turbo four-inch exhaust all the way back all right i did a dct swap from the f-series m4 what year is that the fa the 2016 2017 what year is the car it's a 98. hey what's the is the motor originally from this car it's the same motor just a smaller bore and i use the crank that de-strokes it it used to have a 3.2 liter crank i went with a 3-liter it's a little better on harmonics so do you have paddle shifters with the dct setup or is it yeah yeah it's uh yeah i've got the pedal shifters that's pretty cool yeah how do you like it over the manual sure it's hard to get over just get over giving up that third pedal believe it or not i really love it because the car feels it feels about 100 horsepower faster about the same setting it really it just does not drop a single pound of boost between shifts yeah it's pretty amazing the capability was there so why not i really wanted to do it it's working good i'm happy with it so far i love seeing the new school technology and some of the older cars hopefully we'll see you go rounds in the 150 class today definitely good luck man thank you i appreciate it so how's your first test pass uh a little slow yeah yeah like it wouldn't make boost so i'm going to have to try to break this hell out of it ah it's going to split up on the line no i thought it was high enough to light it it was not so and we're going to turn it down some so turn it down and break boost and see where we get this time we'll have at least one more test pass before elimination i hope it's a long one yeah if not we will find out what happens that's right everyone's in the same boat at least yeah exactly you're paired up with the daytona okay they're gonna raise this guy hopefully the giant wing stays behind you got the roll racing down man it works right stuff but i'm just trying to get in the turbo to like it's so lazy but we'll see gotta break boost it a little bit if you can i tried it in first gear the last time and then short shifted a second and then just blew the tires off oh dude we're going to try to break this thing all right good luck automatic victory 128 for the beamer it was smoking a little bit at the end though they made it past first round yes yes they did good did you let out a little early you know just kind of eased up on the throttle just in case i didn't know where we were at my off route was don't want to break out no exactly we just felt good it did like i break most of that time pretty hard and it came out a lot better beautiful so we're getting there a little by little we can just make a few rounds i get used to it all right i'm not lying about anything yet here and there you know i turned it up just in case and the one i didn't like itself okay hopefully we can make it through this without smoking the clutches we'll see all right third round coming up there's a lot of cars to go through yeah exactly we should erase a bunch good luck yeah thank you m3 is back up here he won the last round i think he's still sandbagging guessing the zr1 is gonna be closer to the mile an hour that they're in this class so see if we can take it home again 141 for the beamer came back around him are you in the final yeah i thought i was disqualified it's like that i lost all the sheets oh it did i was just hanging out oh we're all right so you're on to the last three racing the mustang good luck man ah did you spin off the hip i did okay i was gonna say you wouldn't have caught him anyway no i tried like we got out i was like and then i shifted and i'm like oh hell let's just turn it up i was wondering he was flying and i'm like man i think he's gonna break out he's gonna break out and then he just parks it at the finish line damn he had his game dialed in too yeah he was good any changes you're gonna make out on the car after that uh for next time yeah i mean we'll make some changes you got to upgrade to clutches and stuff so yeah yeah
