**Gaming Performance on a Mystery Laptop**
I recently had the opportunity to test the gaming performance on a mystery laptop that I purchased at a relatively low price point, thinking it would be an easy and affordable way to get back into gaming. The laptop's specs were not publicly disclosed, making it a true mystery box. As I delved deeper into the laptop's capabilities, I was surprised by its overall performance, especially when compared to other laptops that I have reviewed in the past.
One of the first titles I tested on my mystery laptop was The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This is one of the newer titles I've shown so far and the graphics are definitely better than some of the other games and it performs better than them too, also released for PC in 2015 is Grand Theft Auto 5 and I was playing at the lowest possible settings and unfortunately it couldn't hit that average 30 FPS Mark though the 1% lows weren't too bad compared to the average FPS playable yes but not ideal. This is probably what it felt like when I initially played it on the PS3 in 2013 in League of Legends I had it at the low preset graphic settings which was one notch up from the absolute lowest settings possible and this was to try to hit an average 60 FPS but the laptop was just a few FPS shy of it. The 1% loads were good and this was very playable as it should be for one of the easiest to run games.
Next, I tested League of Legends. In this game, I had it at the low preset graphic settings which was one notch up from the absolute lowest settings possible and this was to try to hit an average 60 FPS but the laptop was just a few FPS shy of it. The 1% loads were good and this was very playable as it should be for one of the easiest to run games. I was a bit surprised by this because usually League of Legends runs a bit better and smoother than other titles, but that wasn't the case here.
Finally, I took a look at Valerant. In this game, I was playing at the lowest settings and had to cap the frame rate at 60 FPS in order to help with stuttering and frame drops. Here, the system averaged 60 FPS easily with 1% loads in the upper 30s capping the frames helped but as you can see in the frame rate and frame time graphs they are far from smooth I was a bit surprised by this because usually Valerant runs a bit better and smoother than League of Legends, but that wasn't the case here.
**Cyberpunk 2077**
I knew that Cyberpunk 2077 wouldn't run well on my mystery laptop, as it is a highly demanding game. I threw everything at it to help the frame rate out as I could. Using the lowest possible settings as well as FSR 2.1 set to ultra performance and it looked terrible and ran equally as bad barely managing to average double-digit FPS with single-digit 1% lows. No one should realistically expect to play Cyberpunk on integrated Graphics maybe from a more modern and Powerful MD APu or something but definitely not from something like the UHD 630.
**Conclusion**
Gaming performance on my mystery laptop was not what I expected. While it can run some of the easier games at decent frame rates, it struggles with demanding titles that require higher graphics settings and better hardware. The CPU is a strong point, with an eighth-gen I5 or newer being one of the best-case scenarios for this type of performance. However, the resolution, RAM, and storage options were not as lucky, falling into the lower percentage of people who received these specs.
Overall, I would not recommend purchasing a mystery laptop like this to anyone. The risk is too high that you'll end up with the worst possible configuration, which could be worth around $130 before tax. If you're looking for a gaming laptop, it's better to buy exactly what you're looking for and pay what that costs, rather than taking a chance on something that may not meet your expectations.
**Personal Experience**
I did experience some bad luck with my mystery laptop purchase. I was one of the unlucky ones who received an eighth-gen I5 or newer, but I also got stuck with a 768p screen and only 16 gigs of RAM and a 256 gig SSD, which falls into the majority, around 65% chance that they published. This is not the worst possible outcome, but it's still not ideal.
I'm glad to be done reviewing my mystery laptop, as it was a fun and entertaining experience, even if the results weren't what I expected. If you're considering purchasing a mystery laptop like this, I would strongly advise against it unless you're willing to take a huge risk on a bad configuration.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enin this box is a laptop that I picked up for under $200 I have no idea what the brand model or specs of it is I bought this from woot.com and if you guys don't know what woot is it's an online retailer whose main stick is to sell one item a day usually had a heavy discount well that's how it started out anyway they were eventually acquired by Amazon who kind of messed up the whole novelty of what woot was all about and nowadays woot sells multiple things a day across different categories so in my opinion it kind of lost its charm one of the things wo is really known for since the early days of the company is the random bag of crap a mystery box that cost $3 plus $5 shipping the content of this bag of crap is completely random but usually worth more than what you paid in terms of MSRP anyways so that's kind of the quick back story of for those of you who didn't know and they are the ones that sold me this mystery laptop so in this video we're going to open this up and see what I got right after a quick word from this video sponsor I need you to do something for me real quick go to the closest charging cord that you have plugged into a wall right now you know the one that you Ed to charge your phone tablet or whatever electronic device once you're there take a look at the charging block that that cord is attached to what kind of block is it is it one of these types of whatever the heck brand low quality you probably got it from whatever random device you bought charges slow as heck and always fails sooner than it should types of blocks well if it is then you should consider ditching it and getting something something more along the lines of these These are ug Green's NEX Old Pro Series Chargers in various outputs from 65 to 100 to 160 Watts depending on your needs and they're all PD or power delivery rated so beyond quickly charging your lower power devices like your phone and tablet you can also charge higher power devices like cameras and laptops now take a look at this this is a 150 W laptop charger and this is the 160 watt NEX Old Pro that can output 140 Watts at the highest rated Port not only is this much lighter and has a much smaller footprint it's also more Universal and can charge multiple devices of all types at the same time look it's simple this is you and this is the guy she tells you not to worry about step your charger game up you can find more information on these products in the link in the video description thanks you green for sponsoring the segment of the video and now let's get back to it all right so wots mystery laptop scratch IND Dent as the product title implies these are not brand new laptops they are refurbs and they may have blemishes but should still be fully functional I don't know about y'all but I don't care about that stuff it just looks and if it means it helps me get a bigger discount then I'm cool with it so this was $170 after tax and free shipping so it came out to a grand total of $188 out the door we already kind of have an idea of what could be in this box because woot actually publishes the probability of what the specs can be so let's take a look they say at a minimum you should expect to receive the following so an Intel Core i5 6300 U CPU or newer 50% of customers will receive an i7 25% of customers will receive an i5 e gen or newer So based on this the worst thing we can get is an i5 6300 U uh which is pretty old I wonder if it can go up to like a 10th gen or 12th gen even probably not but uh so that's with the CPU now for the display at least a 13.1 HD display which is 30 uh 1366 X 768 resolution but 80% of customers will receive a full HD 1920 x 1080p so that is a really good chance of getting at least a 108p display and then 65% of customers will receive a 14-in screen 10% will receive uh 15.6 in screen at a minimum we will get at least 8 GB of ddr4 2400 memory uh the laptop supports up to 32 GB apparently all of them will okay uh so you can upgrade if anything but 65% of customers will receive 16 GB of RAM and 10% will receive 32 and then you're going to get at least a 256 GB SSD uh 35% ooh this is a pretty low chance compared to everything else we just read so far 35% chance getting a 512 gig SSD so so we've got a 65% chance of getting 256 which is not the best in 2024 especially if you're trying to game this is likely it's not going to have a dedicated graphics card that's not going to stop us from trying to game on it though without further Ado let's open this thing up so here's the Box uh pretty plain box doesn't have any branding woot or Amazon or you know any details of it being a laptop inside so porch Pirates hopefully are not interested in this all right we've got this fancy tubed air packaging I like to save this stuff for when I ship things out so this is the internals no paperwor no warranty stuff no receipts anything like that very Simple and Clean plain box so this is what we have it is a Dell laptop this is a Dell Latitude 5491 we've got the Microsoft authorized refurbisher sticker there and then a window sticker uh this is actually in pretty good condition I'll try to shine it uh at different angles in the light yeah this is look at this thing this thing is like pristine quick look at the charger it still got the plastic wrap on it this is a 90 W charger so that's kind of the indication of what power this laptop has you know with gaming laptops and and such you're going to be looking at closer to 150 to like 200 WT Chargers so yeah definitely a business laptop but it's going to be fun to check out nonetheless all right that's plugged in we got the light all right so let let's open this up and see if there's any oh there's the paperwork Windows 1011 okay so this just a quick guide recovery information it says stop read this first but I think we're going to be okay taking a look at the the laptop itself dude scratch and dent more like no scratch no Dent no sticker with regards to like I5 i7 or you know Intel whatever Graphics HD integrated graphics but yo look at the condition on this thing I'm trying to get as many close-ups as possible but either this thing was basically brand new or they did a phenomenal job cleaning this thing up we got to get this thing turned on and take a look at what the specs are then I can try to like look on eBay or something to see versus how much I paid if I got ripped off uh if I got a good deal or if this is just about what it's worth so let's see what this has for us all right we are in Windows and from the looks of it this looks like pretty much a clean install I'm not seeing like macae well actually it's see Dell touchpad yeah uh what is this Max audio Pro I'm not seeing any like real forms of bloat Weare but uh we could check that real quick add remove programs uh let's see going down I mean we've got the Dell stuff in here but aside from that it's looking pretty tame yeah this is this is clean nice let's start comparing to their list 25% of customers will receive an i5 eighth gen or newer we hit the jackpot baby we're in that 25% we got an i5 84 400h uh regarding Ram at least 8 gigs but 65% of customers will get 16 gigs so I'm in uh the majority there we got 16 gigs of RAM let's take a look at the resolution this isn't looking too sharp this isn't looking too sharp display settings okay let's see we got uh it was defaulted to the uh it was defaulted to 1366 X 768 but we got the 1080p feature Danny cutting in here so it turns out that the monitor resolution is actually not 1080p it was only showing 1080p because I was mirroring the screen after hooking it up to the capture card which is treated like an external monitor but without an external display plugged in the laptop screen only goes up to 1366 X 768 as seen here so that kind of sucks given that there was such a high chance to get a 1080p screen it says 65 % of customers will receive 14 in and 10 will receive 10% will receive 15.6 I got my my ruler here to to measure so we got the 14 in six okay so we are also in the majority there what is the storage size ah we got the 256 gig SSD you can't win them all what Graphics does this have again we've got Intel Ultra HD graphics 630 integrated Graphics not the best yes but I mean it should be able to at least play Esports games League of Legends valerant for sure those two potato games obviously he's not going to play like 20 20 or newer AAA games uh with these integrated Graphics I'm going to try it anyways but uh playing games like that released back in maybe 2014 2015 2016 for 180 bucks so far it doesn't feel too bad but we can try to find this laptop on eBay and see what it goes for to see if I got shafted or not 54.91 and we've got the 8400h 16 GB of RAM oh no wait no battery this is 146 with no battery so assuming a battery is like 40 bucks it's about to break even Point here's one with uh the exact same specs with what I assume to be a battery for 180 okay here's another one for uh 164 plus 2 shipping so that's 187 that's like exactly the same I paid yeah there's a bunch of these here all the same things same exact specs Ram SSD specs wise doesn't look like I got a good deal however in a lot of these listings you can just see from the pictures uh you see the wear marks and stuff like that the the the pads and stuff they're starting to like Smooth out from what it looks like my unit is at least pristine okay yeah I know I'm coping I'm coping because I didn't get a good deal but I didn't necessarily get ripped off uh I don't think I overpaid and uh I'll find some use for this laptop after the fact whether it be like the living room laptop for you know putting uh whatever media on the TV or uh if my parents need a replacement laptop because the ones I gave them by this point are like really old so I'll find a use for it but what I have to do now is run Windows up updates on this get it fully up to date then I got to download Steam alongside other benchmarks that I want to run on this uh so then I could get to testing it so that's going to take a while uh so I'm going to go do that and then we'll check back in once that's all set up and ready to go all right we're fast forwarded through all the downloading let's go through the benchmarks we'll start off with some synthetics to get a baseline idea of what we've got here in PassMark performance test 11 the overall system which takes into account the CPU GPU RAM and storage scores in the low 50 00s with the CPU and RAM individual scores performing the best relative to other systems and the integrated Graphics coming in as clearly the weakest link looking at a quick synthetic graphics card Benchmark in 3D Mark bar strike the UHD 630 scores around 1100 in terms of the graphics score to get an idea of how bad this is here's some recent results I got for the almost decade old mid-range gtx960 desktop variant uh which scored in the upper 7,000 and the current mid-range desktop RTX 460 which scored over 28,000 this kind of gives you an idea of the scaling between the capability of the integrated Graphics versus dedicated graphics cards jumping into the games I played everything at the laptop displays native resolution 1366 X 768 and most settings were set to the lowest they could be with the exception of a couple of titles we'll start off with the oldest game I tested World of Warcraft classic which is the Revival of 2004's vanilla World of Warcraft despite being such an old game that actually had very low Hardware requirements for its time it's not like the integrated Graphics could completely Breeze right through it I was playing Far from the max graphics on the graphics preset level three out of a Max possible 10 so somewhere in the ballpark of low and I was averaging in the upper 7s FPS with 1% lows in the mid 40s very playable but again this is a very old game or at least based on a very old game fast forwarding a bit to a 2011 title we have Terraria which represents for the Indie 2D genre this was designed to run at 60 FPS hence the 60 FPS cap and it runs pretty well averaging 60 FPS there was a weird slow motion thing going on which caused the frame rate to drop to 30 randomly which was by no fault of the laptop this is a commonly known issue reported by many players of Terraria and no amount of troubleshooting and changing settings I did would fix it but yeah this average 60 FPS with no problem and if that slow motion thing got fixed I'm sure the 1% lows would easily be in the mid-50s if not super close to 60 another title from around this time frame is Skyrim which released at the end of 2011 this is actually Skyrim special Edition which released in 2016 but the special edition actually has some improved stability due to changes pathes have made at the lowest Graphics preset I was just shy of hitting 30 FPS average with 1% loads right at 20 this is probably what it felt like playing on Console back in the day when this came out Prototype 2 came out in 2012 like Skyrim this was another title where I was hoping that since it's so old the integrated Graphics would be able to handle it better but unfortunately that wasn't the case as fun as it was to run around the city as an Unstoppable Force wreaking havoc it wasn't so great doing it at sub30 average FPS also side note can we please please please get a new prototype it's so much fun and there really hasn't been anything remotely similar to it in years bring back the Prototype franchise rocket League usually runs really well even on low-end systems but not on this laptop playing at the lowest settings we only managed to average 37 FPS with 1% lows in the mid 20s look at those erratic frame rate and frame time graphs just like valerant that is not ideal at all for a fast-paced Esports game or even being a mm off when bumping the ball can dramatically change its trajectory dirt rally is a 2015 title and the integrated Graphics did surprisingly well here at low settings which wasn't the lowest setting that would be ultra low uh so this was one step up from that I was seeing average FPS in the mid 50s with 1% lows in the mid-40s this surprised me because this is one of the newer titles I've shown so far and the graphics are definitely better than some of the other games and it performs better than them too also released for PC in 2015 is Grand Theft Auto 5 and I was playing at the lowest possible settings and unfortunately it couldn't hit that average 30 FPS Mark though the 1% lows weren't too bad compared to the average FPS playable yes but not ideal this is probably what it felt like when I initially played it on the PS3 in 2013 in League of Legends I had it at the low preset graphic settings which was one notch up from the absolute lowest settings possible and this was to try to hit an average 60 FPS but the laptop was just a few FPS shy of it the 1% loads were good and this was very playable as it should be for one of the easiest to run games next is valerant which I was playing at the lowest settings and had to cap the frame rate at 60 FPS in order to help with stuttering and frame drops here the system averaged 60 FPS easily with 1% loads in the upper 30 capping the frames helped but as you can see in the frame rate and frame time graphs they are far from smooth I was a bit surprised by this because usually valerant runs a bit better and smoother than league but that wasn't the case here and of course what benchmarking session would be complete without taking a look at cyberpunk I knew this wasn't going to run well but that doesn't matter it's still fun to look at I threw everything at it to help the frame rate out as I could I used the lowest possible settings as well as FSR 2.1 set to ultra performance and it looked terrible and it ran equally as bad barely managing to average double digigit FPS with singled digigit 1% lows no one should realistically expect to play cyberpunk on integrated Graphics maybe from a more modern and Powerful MD Apu or something but definitely not from something like the UHD 630 so there you have it gaming performance on my new to me $188 mystery laptop as you could have probably guessed this was not made for gaming at all as a business laptop for tasks like word processing spreadsheets PowerPoints emails Zoom calls this works just fine because it actually has a pretty capable processor and a decent amount of ram but throw some demanding Graphics at it and it struggles big time to get any gaming usage out of it at all you'd need to be like a World of Warcraft addict like me or someone finally finding time to get through their backlog of unplayed Steam games that they bought over like a decade ago uh but even then as you saw you might have to settle for around 30 FPS in terms of the mystery aspect I kind of averaged out compared to all the possible configurations that this could come as I got lucky and was one of the low percentage people that got an eighth gen I5 or newer that's the best case scenario for the CPU but I also got screwed over on the resolution being in the lower percentage of the people that got the 768p screen and the 16 gigs of RAM and 256 gig SSD was like right in that majority 65% chance that they published uh so overall not the worst but also not the best with that said though I can't recommend anyone else go out and buy a mystery laptop like this I would have been pretty pissed if I was unlucky enough to get shipped a 6G I5 8 gigs of RAM 768p screen and 256 gig storage which was the worst possible outcome like I take a look at eBay and laptops with those specs are worth around $130 before tax so I feel bad for the people that paid as much as I did and got that configuration if you're risk adverse stay far far away from this and anything like it and just buy exactly what you're looking for and pay what that costs like go directly to eBay type in the specs you want and just pay whatever that costs I would not buy this again unless it's for like making a video or for content but as like a regular money conscious consumer trying to get the most bang for my buck nope no more mystery Tech boxes for me but yeah that's going to wrap it up for this video hope you all enjoyed and found this either entertaining or useful in one way or another let me know down in the after the fact whether it be like the living room laptop for you know putting uh whatever media on the TV or uh if my parents need a replacement laptop because the ones I gave them by this point are like really old so I'll find a use for it but what I have to do now is run Windows up updates on this get it fully up to date then I got to download Steam alongside other benchmarks that I want to run on this uh so then I could get to testing it so that's going to take a while uh so I'm going to go do that and then we'll check back in once that's all set up and ready to go all right we're fast forwarded through all the downloading let's go through the benchmarks we'll start off with some synthetics to get a baseline idea of what we've got here in PassMark performance test 11 the overall system which takes into account the CPU GPU RAM and storage scores in the low 50 00s with the CPU and RAM individual scores performing the best relative to other systems and the integrated Graphics coming in as clearly the weakest link looking at a quick synthetic graphics card Benchmark in 3D Mark bar strike the UHD 630 scores around 1100 in terms of the graphics score to get an idea of how bad this is here's some recent results I got for the almost decade old mid-range gtx960 desktop variant uh which scored in the upper 7,000 and the current mid-range desktop RTX 460 which scored over 28,000 this kind of gives you an idea of the scaling between the capability of the integrated Graphics versus dedicated graphics cards jumping into the games I played everything at the laptop displays native resolution 1366 X 768 and most settings were set to the lowest they could be with the exception of a couple of titles we'll start off with the oldest game I tested World of Warcraft classic which is the Revival of 2004's vanilla World of Warcraft despite being such an old game that actually had very low Hardware requirements for its time it's not like the integrated Graphics could completely Breeze right through it I was playing Far from the max graphics on the graphics preset level three out of a Max possible 10 so somewhere in the ballpark of low and I was averaging in the upper 7s FPS with 1% lows in the mid 40s very playable but again this is a very old game or at least based on a very old game fast forwarding a bit to a 2011 title we have Terraria which represents for the Indie 2D genre this was designed to run at 60 FPS hence the 60 FPS cap and it runs pretty well averaging 60 FPS there was a weird slow motion thing going on which caused the frame rate to drop to 30 randomly which was by no fault of the laptop this is a commonly known issue reported by many players of Terraria and no amount of troubleshooting and changing settings I did would fix it but yeah this average 60 FPS with no problem and if that slow motion thing got fixed I'm sure the 1% lows would easily be in the mid-50s if not super close to 60 another title from around this time frame is Skyrim which released at the end of 2011 this is actually Skyrim special Edition which released in 2016 but the special edition actually has some improved stability due to changes pathes have made at the lowest Graphics preset I was just shy of hitting 30 FPS average with 1% loads right at 20 this is probably what it felt like playing on Console back in the day when this came out Prototype 2 came out in 2012 like Skyrim this was another title where I was hoping that since it's so old the integrated Graphics would be able to handle it better but unfortunately that wasn't the case as fun as it was to run around the city as an Unstoppable Force wreaking havoc it wasn't so great doing it at sub30 average FPS also side note can we please please please get a new prototype it's so much fun and there really hasn't been anything remotely similar to it in years bring back the Prototype franchise rocket League usually runs really well even on low-end systems but not on this laptop playing at the lowest settings we only managed to average 37 FPS with 1% lows in the mid 20s look at those erratic frame rate and frame time graphs just like valerant that is not ideal at all for a fast-paced Esports game or even being a mm off when bumping the ball can dramatically change its trajectory dirt rally is a 2015 title and the integrated Graphics did surprisingly well here at low settings which wasn't the lowest setting that would be ultra low uh so this was one step up from that I was seeing average FPS in the mid 50s with 1% lows in the mid-40s this surprised me because this is one of the newer titles I've shown so far and the graphics are definitely better than some of the other games and it performs better than them too also released for PC in 2015 is Grand Theft Auto 5 and I was playing at the lowest possible settings and unfortunately it couldn't hit that average 30 FPS Mark though the 1% lows weren't too bad compared to the average FPS playable yes but not ideal this is probably what it felt like when I initially played it on the PS3 in 2013 in League of Legends I had it at the low preset graphic settings which was one notch up from the absolute lowest settings possible and this was to try to hit an average 60 FPS but the laptop was just a few FPS shy of it the 1% loads were good and this was very playable as it should be for one of the easiest to run games next is valerant which I was playing at the lowest settings and had to cap the frame rate at 60 FPS in order to help with stuttering and frame drops here the system averaged 60 FPS easily with 1% loads in the upper 30 capping the frames helped but as you can see in the frame rate and frame time graphs they are far from smooth I was a bit surprised by this because usually valerant runs a bit better and smoother than league but that wasn't the case here and of course what benchmarking session would be complete without taking a look at cyberpunk I knew this wasn't going to run well but that doesn't matter it's still fun to look at I threw everything at it to help the frame rate out as I could I used the lowest possible settings as well as FSR 2.1 set to ultra performance and it looked terrible and it ran equally as bad barely managing to average double digigit FPS with singled digigit 1% lows no one should realistically expect to play cyberpunk on integrated Graphics maybe from a more modern and Powerful MD Apu or something but definitely not from something like the UHD 630 so there you have it gaming performance on my new to me $188 mystery laptop as you could have probably guessed this was not made for gaming at all as a business laptop for tasks like word processing spreadsheets PowerPoints emails Zoom calls this works just fine because it actually has a pretty capable processor and a decent amount of ram but throw some demanding Graphics at it and it struggles big time to get any gaming usage out of it at all you'd need to be like a World of Warcraft addict like me or someone finally finding time to get through their backlog of unplayed Steam games that they bought over like a decade ago uh but even then as you saw you might have to settle for around 30 FPS in terms of the mystery aspect I kind of averaged out compared to all the possible configurations that this could come as I got lucky and was one of the low percentage people that got an eighth gen I5 or newer that's the best case scenario for the CPU but I also got screwed over on the resolution being in the lower percentage of the people that got the 768p screen and the 16 gigs of RAM and 256 gig SSD was like right in that majority 65% chance that they published uh so overall not the worst but also not the best with that said though I can't recommend anyone else go out and buy a mystery laptop like this I would have been pretty pissed if I was unlucky enough to get shipped a 6G I5 8 gigs of RAM 768p screen and 256 gig storage which was the worst possible outcome like I take a look at eBay and laptops with those specs are worth around $130 before tax so I feel bad for the people that paid as much as I did and got that configuration if you're risk adverse stay far far away from this and anything like it and just buy exactly what you're looking for and pay what that costs like go directly to eBay type in the specs you want and just pay whatever that costs I would not buy this again unless it's for like making a video or for content but as like a regular money conscious consumer trying to get the most bang for my buck nope no more mystery Tech boxes for me but yeah that's going to wrap it up for this video hope you all enjoyed and found this either entertaining or useful in one way or another let me know down in the comments Below have you ever bought Myster Tech before and if so where from and how did that turn out I want to thank you all as always for watching and for continuing to support the channel huge shout out to the channel members for their above and beyond support be safe out there and I will see you all down in the comments as well as the next stream and or video bye\n"
