MacBook Pro 10 Years Later

The Evolution of the MacBook Pro: A 10-Year Journey

The MacBook Pro has been a staple of Apple's lineup for over a decade, and as we take a closer look at its development, it's clear that this machine has come a long way since its introduction. To put things into perspective, let's compare the new MacBook Pro to the original PowerBook, which was released 25 years ago. While both machines share some similarities, I believe that comparing them is not entirely accurate. The original PowerBook seems more suitable for comparison with the first notebook of its kind, the non-unibody MacBook Pro.

First introduced in 2003, the original MacBook Pro is a beautiful laptop in my opinion. Its design has stood the test of time, and the aluminum used in its construction is still as fresh as ever today. However, when compared to the absurdly thin and light contours of the latest MacBook Pro, it's clear that Apple's styling has improved significantly since 2007. The new MacBook Pro boasts an array of sleek lines and a sturdy build, showcasing Apple's commitment to innovation.

One aspect that immediately stands out when comparing the original MacBook Pro to the new one is the port situation. The OG MacBook features ports all over it, from a CD drive to USB ports, mag safe connections, and even some more obscure ports. While this may seem excessive today, there's something to be said for "future-proofing" – a term that Apple has certainly embraced with the new Macbook Pro's four USBC Thunderbolt ports. At first glance, these ports may seem like an inconvenience now, but in five years, when your friends lament the obsolescence of their old computers, you'll have the last laugh.

The MacBook Pro was a groundbreaking moment for Apple as it marked the company's transition to Intel processors. The 2007 update, which I'm currently using, features a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, upgraded RAM to 4 GB, an Nvidia 8600 GT with 256 megabytes of VRAM, and an upgraded 600 GB hard drive. While these specs may seem relatively pedestrian compared to today's standards, it's worth noting that Steve Jobs announced dual-core processors in this machine at the time, indicating a forward-thinking approach.

One notable feature of the original MacBook Pro is its built-in iSight camera, which was a game-changer back in 2006. The iSight camera made crowds go wild and has since become an essential component of modern computing. When comparing these computers side by side, it's truly astonishing to see how far processor cores have doubled, screen resolution has doubled, RAM has quadrupled, and VRAM has either quadrupled or sextupled depending on the model.

If we continue this trajectory, a new MacBook Pro 10 years from now will contain an octacore processor, 64 GB of RAM, and 32 or 64 GB of VRAM. This prospect is indeed exciting, and it's clear that Apple has continued to push the boundaries of innovation in its product lineup.

In conclusion, the MacBook Pro has come a long way since its introduction, and its evolution reflects Apple's commitment to innovation and design excellence. From the original PowerBook to the latest models, each iteration has brought significant improvements, showcasing the company's dedication to delivering cutting-edge technology to its customers.
