**A Mind-Bending Murder Mystery: A Review of "The Silent Patient" by Alex Marwood**
I thought this book was just going to be a basic murder mystery when I read it, oh no! This book messes with your mind like nothing else. It plays with the concepts of reality and perspective - it's crazy town, but it's so good. The other amazing thing that really adds to the immersive reading experience is that the book doesn't just describe what the guy is looking at, like websites or texts - there are pictures of what he's actually seeing. So you have this weird feeling that you're very much involved in this investigation and committed to figuring out what the heck is going on.
I honestly don't want to say much because it's a mystery, but it's so good. Marsha Pohl has just climbed the ranks of my favorite authors because she really messed with my brain on this one. And it was great - it was really, really fantastic. I ended up giving this book five out of five stars obviously, cuz holy moly after that, I wanted to pick up something kind of light.
**A Hauntingly Beautiful Tale: A Review of "The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender" by Lesley Walton**
I picked up this book expecting to like it. I was familiar with the magical surrealism element - it follows a young girl Ava Lavender who was born with wings in the whole story, she's basically recounting her life as well as her mother and grandmother's life, counting backwards so she'll start with her grandmother's life to her mother's life and then to her life. But I have to say this book was like so much more than I was expecting it to be. It literally felt like it kind of burrowed itself inside of me - I loved this book so much.
Holy crap, so like I said it blends this sort of fantastical element so seamlessly with our known reality and it was just a wonder to read about. To give it a comparison, I think if you've seen the movie Big Fish, it has a very similar tone and use of magical realism. Obviously, the storyline plot lines are very very different but holy crap, I loved this book so much - like it is character-driven but with its unique qualities that made me fall in love with it.
It was so beautiful, I love loved it so much. Thank you Leslie Walton for doing things that you did because you did something that did something to me. Obviously, I gave this book five out of five stars literally, cannot even talk about it anymore - it's so good.
**A Haunting and Thought-Provoking Novel: A Review of "Please Ignore Vera Dietz" by A.S. King**
I picked up this book with the title of Leonard Peacock a novel by Matthew Quick. I literally always combine this title with Please Ignore Me vars every time I see their titles are mixed together, but that is neither here nor there so let's get started.
This book follows a kid named Leonard Peacock and he wakes up on his birthday and he has plans to kill himself and his former best friend with his grandfather's former Nazi gun. So that's a very intense like synopsis and this is a very intense book. He's just like literally going throughout his day saying goodbye to everyone cuz he as he has plans to kill himself um yes, this book packs a pretty big a big punch with a very little package - it's a very short book and I really really enjoyed it.
I ended up giving it four stars um, I found it to be very moving scary at times really uh I think it painted a really great it dealt with some really great social issues I think very well which I'm not surprised cuz Matthew Quick I feel like does that a lot. It also was really funny which I also appreciate in things like this cuz even in the darkest of times people try to cope with things with humor and I felt like that was um done really nicely.
I will say the one fault I have with this and this is the reason why I gave it four instead of five stars - I felt like the ending and everything was wrapped up very quickly, fact. I felt like I didn't have enough resolution and that's saying something for me cuz usually I don't mind like open endings but I honestly felt like there was something missing at the end of this that being said though I really enjoyed this so if you're into realistic contemporary fiction I highly recommend checking this book out.
**October Wrap-Up**
I am pretty darn pleased with my reading for this month and I will see you guys soon with my November TBR.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys it's rean and today I'm here to film my October wrapup which actually in the month of October I'm pretty pleased with my reading I read a total of six books well rather five books and one comic book bind up but I had a really crazy October with midterms one week I wasn't able to read it all so I'm actually very pleased and also I liked a lot of the books I read this month so let's get started so the very first book I read of the month of October was the foreshadowing by Marcus Sedwick this book like all of Marcus sedwick's books I really really enjoyed his writing is just something I just love there's something about it there's an eerie quality to it that I just really like I have an affinity with however this is probably my least favorite Marcus Sedwick book I have read to date but it was still really good that follows a young girl who can see when people are going to die and it's set during World War I and the cool thing about it about this novel in itself is the chapters count backwards uh and it counts backwards to this event that happens at the very end of the book so you're kind of waiting to see what's going to happen at the end of the book I like I said I really enjoyed this ended up giving it a 3.75 out of five stars the writing was fantastic um wasn't too connected to these characters this time but you know still really great if you like Marcus edwick or not I still check this out the ne next up I read a comic book bindup and that is deadly class volume one I really really enjoyed this deadly class is a comic book series that follows a whole bunch it's set in the 80s and it follows a whole bunch of kids that go to an assassin school um to kill people like and it's not like good assassins like these kids kind of are kind of really bad but still kind of very redeemable in a lot of weeks um the thing about this graphic novel or rather this comic book series that I enjoy the most is definitely the art style it it's very bold and it uses um color schemes for all of its pages and honestly it's just so beautiful it's extremely violent and not for younger audiences but the Artistry is so beautiful and it's really funny the downside or rather my some NE negative aspects to this um I found it hard to like kind of attach myself to a lot of the characters and I didn't feel like a lot of plot progression happened in this like I'm still waiting for sort of the main thread like the point at the same time however I really enjoyed the ride that this first um bindup gave me and I ended up giving it a four out of five stars the next book should be of no surprise and that is The Blood of Olympus by Rick Ry Orton the fifth and final book to The Heroes of Olympus series and it's over and I'm so sad honestly I'm just going to tell you straight up I gave this book five out of five stars literally Rick Orton can do no fault with me I have read and loved his book book since I was like 10 really honestly he could like put out nothing and I still gave it five out of five stars if that even makes sense so I'm really in no way to critically Analyze This Book because I went into this book with my heart because I love it however I mean there were some faults I'll say for this final book however because I love it I love the series it's a conclusion I gave it five out of five stars I will voice my faults with you briefly as I don't want to spoil anything I thought there needed to be more Percy in the final book of The Heroes of Olympus series I mean come on and I found the um climax to be like really quick but other than that I mean I loved it I love it I love it all I love it forever so still gave it 5 out of five stars because it is I don't know it's like my childhood I can't demerit my childhood the next book I read took me a pretty long time to read it's because I started it right before all every my life came apart at the seams with midterm long but it was amazing and it is night film by Mara pestle this is probably one of the most immersive reading experiences I have ever had like to put it simply I literally Mara pesle can craft some characters that I literally feel like were real and I honestly I just can't okay I'm going to tell you what this book is about so this book follows the um it opens with the death of a very well-known horror director's daughter and there's just sort of mystery surrounding it like she it looks like she committed suicide but some people are unsure and our main character the perspective that we follow is kind of a denounced reporter who picks up the story and investigates her death I will say I thought this book was just going to be a basic murder mystery when I read it oh oh no this book messes with your mind like nothing else it plays with the concepts of reality and like perspective it is crazy town but it is so good the other amazing thing and which I really think adds to the immersive reading experience is
