$40 Full Mechanical Keyboard - Redragon Kumara K552 Review and 5K Subs Appreciation!

**Keyboard Review: Red Dragon Kumara**

I recently had the opportunity to test out the Red Dragon Kumara keyboard, and I was pleasantly surprised by its performance. One of the first things I noticed about this keyboard is its compact size, which makes it easy to pack up and take as a travel keyboard. It measures 14 inches long and just shy of 5 inches wide, making it perfect for those who want a portable keyboard that won't take up too much space.

The Kumara also features two foldable feet with rubber end pieces and two rubber pads to keep the keyboard grippy on whatever surface it's on. I was impressed by how well these worked, even when I tilted the surface the keyboard was on. In my test, the keyboard clung up to around 45°, which is a pretty extreme situation that you're unlikely to see in real-world uses.

Another notable feature of the Kumara is its keycaps. The double-shot injected molded caps are made up of two separate pieces of plastic, which makes them less prone to rubbing off over time compared to printed or dyed caps. This is a nice touch, as it means that the keys will look and feel great for a long time.

Underneath the keycaps lies the mechanical switches. If you're into the clacky sound of mechanical keyboards, then these switches are definitely worth considering. I tested out the MX Blue and Green switches, which are among the loudest and most pronounced. The Kumara uses generics that Red Dragon calls custom Cherry green like equivalents, but it's worth noting that there's some confusion over what exactly these switches are. According to Red Dragon, they're ALU Blue switches with a slightly higher actuation force than Cherry Blues. However, I've found in my own experience that these switches are more closely aligned with Cherry Blues.

To put the Kumara switches to the test, I recorded some sound clips comparing them to my Razor Black Widow keyboard, which uses Cherry MX Blue switches. The result is clear: the Kumara switches have a slightly more pronounced click sound than the Cherry Blues used in my Black Widow keyboard. This isn't necessarily bad news for those who prefer the sound of ALU Blue switches – it's just something to be aware of.

In terms of performance, I was pleased to find that the Kumara worked well with my average typing speed of around 100 words per minute. This is a solid pace, and the Kumara was able to keep up easily. One potential drawback to consider is the lack of a number pad on this keyboard. For some users, this may be a major advantage – compact keyboards can be very convenient for travel or as an alternative to laptop keyboards.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend the Red Dragon Kumara keyboard to anyone in the market for one. It's a solid buy at a reasonable price point, and it's sure to provide hours of reliable service. While some users may miss the number pad, others will see its absence as a bonus. Either way, this is a great option for those who want a compact, portable keyboard that won't break the bank.
