Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff _ Spoiler Free Review

Introduction to Illum by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Hey everyone, it's Haley and today I'm going to be doing a spoiler-free review for Illum by Amy Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Illum is a science fiction novel where this girl Katie breaks up with her boyfriend Ezra and then a whole entire War breaks out and basically just chaos happens and this book is kind of the files that are um chronicling all that chaos and all that happened so it's told in a way that really isn't like a normal book.

The Writing Style of Illum

But I will get into that when I talk about the writing. The writing of this book was absolutely fabulous. Like this whole entire book is just nuts to me, like the whole concept of it. I'm going to take off this dust jacket thing because it's really weird and it doesn't really stay on very nicely so I'm just going to take it off but you can see that this book is really it looks like a file and the writing of it and just the whole like compilation of it like it's absolutely ridiculous, it's not a normal book at all, it's like email chats, it's um like journal entries, it's the inside of a computer. Like it's all so crazy and so interesting and this book honestly like it was just it blew my mind. It blew my mind so many times.

The Audio Book Experience

I listen to the audio book of it and the a audio book was fabulous it was just so intriguing and really sucked me in it was just amazing. The characters in this book are really well-developed, which is kind of surprising because you would think with the way that it's told that you wouldn't get to see a lot of them. I think the one character you didn't get to delve a lot into was Ezra but you got so much of Katie and Katie is really just a super strong heroine she knows what she has to do and she's willing to risk her life to do it and even in the situation she's in She's Not Afraid and I love that about her. She's really just empowering and just super badass and really cool and I loved her as a character despite that she does have vulnerabilities which I think really humanized her so she wasn't just this one-sided really like badass girl she had these things that were going on that like she struggled dealing with and you were able to see that which I really liked.

The Plot of Illum

The plot of this book was super fast moving like it honestly did not stop it was action from the second this book started and you would think that the plot would be a little bit difficult to kind of flesh out um since it's told in the way the story is told in the way it is but it worked so well like the form and the function just went really well together and it made for an incredible story. It was just so fabulous and I loved the characters I loved the whole concept of it and it was I don't normally like science fiction so for me to love a science fiction book this much, I mean it has to be good because I don't really like science fiction but this one just absolutely was incredible. And the plot took turns that it wasn't expecting at all it just kept on going and never stopped and oh my God it was ridiculous.

Conclusion and Recommendation

So overall I thought this book was fabulous I would definitely definitely recommend it to you guys. I end up giving it a five out of five stars it was just so fabulous. The audio book really made it come to life because there are different voice actors for each of the parts and it really felt like I was watching a movie and I could picture everything perfectly in my head. This book is honestly just absolutely incredible.
