When You Start with Something Wild: The Evolution of Bugatti's Powertrain
Bugatti has been working with its tried and true quad turbocharged W16 engine for decades now, starting off with the Veyron and its nearly 900 horsepower engine. Over time, this engine evolved into the Chiron, which boasted an impressive almost 1,600 horsepower. However, with the Chiron out of the way, Bugatti needed something even more mad to come along and take its place. Meet the Torné, a car that's named after the part of a higher-end watch that's supposed to make it both more accurate and more complicated.
The heart of the Torné lies with its powertrain, which has moved away from turbocharging and the W layout. Instead, we now have a naturally aspirated V16 engine that produces around 1,000 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. But that's not all - the Torné also features three electric motors, two at the front and one out back in total. Together, these electric motors deliver an astonishing 800 horsepower on their own, pulling juice from a 24.8 kW battery pack. The gearbox is an 8-speed dual-clutch, and of course, this car is all-wheel drive.
Cosworth helped design the engine, which revs all the way up to 9,000 RPM and sounds as amazing as it does. But what about the actual performance? Bugatti says the Torné will go from 0 to 62 mph in just 2 seconds flat and reach 125 mph from a standstill in under 5 seconds. And if you're using the speed key, you get to unlock a top speed of 276 mph. But if you want to cruise around silently and let the V16 take a nap, the Torné also has 37 miles of usable EV-only range.
Design-wise, the Torné is immediately recognizable as a Bugatti product, with its sleek design and aerodynamic lines. It looks like it could be a sibling of the Chiron, but the two cars don't share any parts. The carbon fiber body sits lower and wider than the previous model, giving it a more aggressive stance on the road. And that horseshoe-shaped grill up front is a link across Bugatti models, serving as a nod to the brand's heritage.
The Torné also features an advanced gauge cluster that's a wild technical achievement all on its own. This design points to something that could become special going forward - a way for cars to integrate seamlessly into our daily lives without sacrificing performance or style. The lack of real estate dedicated to screens is particularly noteworthy, as it allows the head of the driver to remain one of the most beautiful clusters ever devised.
The gauge cluster itself is built similar to how high-end watches are constructed, with titanium playing nicely alongside Sapphire and rubies. And while it sits seemingly at the top of the steering column, it's actually designed in such a way that it stays put when the wheel is turned left or right. It's a wonderfully designed analog element in a car packing the latest in multi-type powertrain tech.
If you're interested in some screen time, there is a small digital display hidden at the top of the center stack - for vehicle data and connecting your phone to the car. And it deploys when you put the car in reverse, serving as the backup camera. The Torné marks the second model to emerge from the melding of minds between Bugatti and Ratz, and it's clearly a hell of a thing.
But let's get to the real question - how much will this car set you back? Word is that the prices start north of $42 million before adding in any options. And if you want one of the 250 limited-edition Tornés available for purchase, you'll need to have previously purchased a Bugatti or Ratz vehicle to qualify. But don't worry - if you do and are qualified, but miss out on this first run, I'm sure Bugatti will crank out 50 different even more limited-run models over the course of the next few years.
