The Scoda Superb: A Family-Friendly Vehicle with a Classless Edge
The Scoda Superb has been part of the fifth gear family for five months, and it's still receiving almost unanimous praise from anyone who gets to sit in it, look at it, or drive it. Even Fifth Gear royalty like Tiff and Plato couldn't find fault with our Superb, a couple of weekends ago we took it to the NEC in Birmingham for the Autop Sport International show. The Superb was basically used as their win car, Bago sprawled across the back seats with cups of tea and bacon sandwiches - no complaints at all.
The Superb came across as totally classless, having both handsome, prestigious looks that hold their own, and a Scoda badge that doesn't come across as cocky or aloof. It's a people's champion, in other words. This is evident even amongst proper race cars and racing drivers who were able to appreciate the Superb without any issues.
Our experience with the Superb has been nothing short of positive. We had to take it in for a service which was, quite frankly, a painless experience. We booked ourselves anonymously into the nearest Birmingham dealer, and the service we got was spot on. They offered to come and pick the car up from us, offered to give us a courtesy car, and did all of the work in just one day. This shows that, at least in our experience, Scoda dealers are as good as their cars.
However, it's worth noting that even with a car as capable as the Superb, there can be trouble. The double-clutch gearbox isn't quite as smooth and unintrusive as we think it could be. In gentle driving, it has a tendency to change upper gear too early - presumably to keep CO2 emissions down. The only problem with this is that it can drop the engine out of its turbo range and therefore lacks any power.
Moreover, when driving along and asking for a small burst of acceleration, the gearbox can be too keen to change down a gear when in fact the gear it's in would pull along perfectly fine. This highlights a couple of months left with us using the Superb, and we're gearing up for the spring series which starts in April. In this time, we'll upload a couple more videos so keep your eyes peeled on the website.
