How to Flash a Custom ROM to Your Android Phone: A Step-by-Step Guide
How's it going guys this is daav here from fb.com and today I'm be doing a video on how to flash a custom rom to your Android phone so first things first you do need to be rooted in order to be able to do this as you can see I'm already rooted I have super user permissions.
The reason why we need to be rooted is because it allows us to install the necessary apps and tools that will help us with flashing a custom ROM. One of those apps is ROM Manager, which is available for free on the Android market. We'll be using this app to flash our custom ROM and to navigate through the recovery mode.
So go ahead and download ROM Manager from the Android market, then launch it up and start the installation process. Once you've installed the app, we need to tap on "flash clockwork mod recovery" which will allow us to install a zip file from our SD card. This is important because it allows us to install the custom ROM.
This case I have the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant as an example and as you can see it is flashing the recovery hit allow when super user requests and uh you can see it say successfully downloaded clockwork mod recovery. Now that we've installed the recovery mode, we need to turn off our phone just press power off and while this turning off I'll show you how to boot into recovery.
So what you're going to do is you're going to press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously so uh phone isn't off yet I have to wait for it to vibrate but you're going to press these two guys simultaneously and hold it until you see the screen light up all right so the phone is off now.
Now that we've turned off our phone, we need to press and hold the volume down button and the power key simultaneously until we see the screen line up let go. When you let go of the buttons, your phone should boot into the recovery mode where you can navigate through using your volume rocker. The touch screen won't work so what in order to navigate you need to press up and down on your volume rocker to go up and down and to select something.
You'll see a list of options on your screen such as "Wipe data factory reset" which is the first wipe we're going to do. Press the power button and choose yes then it will give you a list of Nos and one yes you're going to hit that one yes and you can see it did a factory reset. The second wipe is to wipe cache partition same thing go to uh yes wipe the cache and then the third and last swipe that you want to do is under Advanced and it's wipe dvic cache.
So go to yes again and there you go so I've done the three wipes now I'm ready to install or Flash the ROM. So you're going to go to "install zip from SD card" and uh put your the ROM you want to install on your SD card before you even do any of this and then go to choose zip from SD card press the power button mine's at the very bottom so it's a trigger 3.2 final I'm just going to tap the select button go down to yes to confirm that I want to install it.
So when we click on "select" you'll see it will be installing the ROM and you want to let this go for a while it should take somewhere between 2 to 5 minutes depending on the phone and the ROM but uh shouldn't take too long. All right so you can see it's almost done and uh I'll just skip to when it's complete all right so the install from SD card is complete as you can see so install the ROM.
What you want to do from here is go back and then hit "Reboot system now". When you press this button, your phone will restart and boot into your new custom ROM. Something important to note is when your phone loads up the screen where it looks like it's ready for you to start using it I'd recommend letting it sit for an additional 5 to 10 minutes because sometimes a ROM will load things up in the background and if you interfere with the phone or start using it before it's completely loaded uh it can lead to some issues.
So let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then begin using your new custom ROM. This concludes our guide on how to flash a custom ROM to your Android phone. Remember to always back up your data before making any changes to your phone, and also be careful when installing new software as it can sometimes cause issues with your device.
