The A6 Bionic Chip: A Game-Changer for Computational Imaging
The A6 bionic chip is playing a major role in the new iPhone 14, and it's having a significant impact on image processing. One of the ways this is manifesting itself is through the photonic engine, which allows deep Fusion to work pre-compression. This means that the phone can do a lot more, a lot faster, in terms of computational imaging. While you may not notice any of this happening under the hood, it's actually allowing the iPhone to take a bunch of images and then use deep fusion to bring together the best parts of all those images into one cohesive picture.
This results in images that retain detail, have more dynamic range, and are just overall more beautiful. The new hardware is certainly playing a role in this, but it's also largely due to the maturation of the software over time. The iPhone 14's camera system has become incredibly powerful and intuitive, making it one of the best systems for content creation on the go.
I've only had the opportunity to use the iPhone 14 for about a week now, but I've already done as much shooting and editing as I possibly could. While I'd love to do a more in-depth review, I wanted to share a few observations that have stood out to me so far. The image quality is truly gorgeous, especially in low-light conditions. This is an area where the iPhone 14 really shines, handling midtones and shadows with ease and resulting in images that are incredibly detailed.
I've also noticed that when editing images on the phone, I'm getting better results than when I bring them into external applications like Lightroom. This has to do with the information that Apple is storing in its raw files, which seems to be allowing for more accurate exposure and a wider range of dynamic range. Additionally, the iPhone 14's editing software has become incredibly intuitive, making it easy to get great results right within the phone.
Finally, I want to note that while there isn't a standard for raw file formats, Apple's implementation is certainly one of the most powerful and mature out there. The way that you're able to edit images on the iPhone 14 is really top-notch, and I think this is definitely worth considering if you're into content creation.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enin this video we are going to take a look at the new iPhone lineup from Apple I've been using the iPhone 14 the iPhone 14 pro as well as the iPhone 14 pro Max I've been using these phones for the last week and I'm really excited to dig into some of the new camera features and share them with you in this video obviously this is a photography Channel and I'm going to be addressing a lot of the camera features and the image quality from the iPhone 14 Series so I've only had these phones for about a week or so but I can tell you that the image quality that I'm seeing from the iPhone 14 is some of the best that I've seen on any phone Apple of course has its own talking points for improvements but I think there's a lot more going on with this phone this is a result of new hardware as well as continued improvements ACR Ross the software is Apple consistently gets better every year with every model the image quality on these phones is absolutely fabulous so we have a lot of updates on iPhone 14 some of them are somewhat incremental and some of them are pretty major over what we saw on the iPhone 13 how major are we talking about well I'm going to let you decide but let's get in and check out iPhone 14 so Apple did not include a mini version with iPhone 14 but we do have four different phones in the iPhone 14 lineup so on the base level we have iPhone 14 that I've been working with here and this phone features a 6.1 in display there's also an iPhone 14 plus which features a 6.7 in display we also have the pro versions so there's the iPhone 14 pro and the iPhone 14 pro Max which also figure 6.1 and 6.7 in displays respectively price is going to be a big difference on these phones with the regular iPhone 14 starting at $7.99 all the way up to $15.99 for the iPhone 14 Max Pro maxed out with 1 tab of storage but as always you can cut back on cost depending on what your storage and feature needs are all of these models are extremely wellb built as you would expect they all feature Aerospace grayed aluminum with a ceramic Shield screen which is according to Apple tougher than any other smartphone glass these phones are of course ip68 certified as well and of course we have a new color on the Pro Models which is this new Deep Purple which is quite lovely so the biggest differences between the standard and Pro Models are going to be most notably the processors the camera system the new Dynamic Island feature versus the older Notch and the new always on display iPhone 14 and 14 plus feature a 5 nmet a15 Bionic chip and the pro and pro Max models have the brand new a16 bionic processors that use a 4 nanometer manufacturing process this greatly impacts speed as well as efficiency and you're going to notice this with a very smooth performance and in general a better battery life one of the notable new features on the Pro Models is the inclusion of what we're calling the dynamic Island which is this pill-shaped black spot on the top of the screen now the idea here is to maximize the real estate that you're getting from the screen but at the same time be able to hide a little bit the front-facing camera module that sits underneath the screen so we've seen this before with companies like Samsung but I think Apple have a really unique approach to Dynamic Island so the way this works is they've actually integrated this into animations now we have an OLED screen so your blacks are about as black as they can get so they use that to their advantage so if you get notifications for example like a text message or you get an email alert or maybe your music changes that you're listening to you're going to see this animate and show you a little display this is a really unique way of dealing with this and I think it's actually really nice this is only available on the Pro Models the regular iPhone 14 models still use the older Notch that we've seen on Apple phones before iOS 16 gives us some brand new options for customizing the lock screen so you can use your own photos for example there are interactive widgets you can even change the font settings the Pro Models feature the new always on display which works very similar in the way that apple have treated the Apple watch So Pro Models are going to feature a 120 H refresh rate which looks amazing this is a technology that they call Promotion and so it is a variable refresh rate so it can go all the way from 120 HZ down to 1 Herz since the phone isn't in use when you're on the lock screen and it doesn't have a serious impact on battery life of course if you turn your phone face down or put it in your pocket the screen will go completely dark so a quick note about the user experience with the new integrated always on screen so it's always on technically right now it's gone a little bit dark because of my Lighting in here so this combined with the fact that the camera does facial recognition for unlock so fast now it's like your phone wasn't locked I just look at it I swipe up and it comes to life I have to it was weird at first I had to double check it a few times just to make sure that I had security set up on here but once you get used to it it's a really seamless experience and I love the way that apple have incorp ated this into the experience of using an iPhone the screens of course on all of these phones are excellent all of them are OLED HDR displays they all feature true tone P3 wide color and they all feature a 2 million to1 contrast ratio however the Pro Models do have slightly brighter screens which will make a difference for those of you who use your phone outdoors in bright sunlight it will make it much easier to see iPhone 14 also features emergency SOS via satellite as well as crash detection and hopefully these are features that you won't ever have to use but nice that they are there in case of emergency these emergency features are available on all iPhone 14 models so let's talk about the camera system in iPhone 14 so this is probably my favorite upgrade from any camera that we've had in the past there's a lot of stuff that apple have been working on for a long time things like deep Fusion that have gotten to a point where they're starting to mature now a quick word about Apple is typically they don't put features in phones first you'll see other companies that stay kind of on the bleeding Ed Edge of High megapixel sensors and things like that so A lot of times they will trickle down to iPhone when Apple feels like it's a matur technology and they've integrated into their system as a whole having said that I don't want to get too technical with the way all this works because it's really difficult to Apple only tell you so much but I do want to talk about why I think some of the things that are happening under the hood with this phone make this my favorite upgrade of any iPhone to date so first of all we have upgraded cameras and Optics on all models so iPhone 14 features the ultra wide angle and the main camera so it's the two camera system now the main camera has been upgraded with a bigger sensor and larger aperture which is going to perform much better in the way that it gathers light so the main camera features a 26 mm equivalent f1.5 aperture 7 element lens and features sensor shift Optical image stabilization Apple has also introduced the latest image combination technology or computational Imaging that they're calling the photonic engine so essentially this refers to the method that Apple uses in combining multiple images behind the scenes when you press the shutter so deep Fusion is a part of this equation and is also worth noting that this has been moved up in the Imaging pipeline so now it is before the compression stage so what this means is it allows the processor to have way more information for processing the images than when it was post compression so the results actually are noticeably better in low light details especially the darker parts of the image where color tends to lose Vibrance so it's that low midtone right as it becomes Shadows you're going to see way more detail in there than you did before and it makes this phone really cool for shooting things with a lot of Ambiance and a lot of mood to them video features are upgraded as well and one of my favorites is the new action mode which allows for an incredible image stabilization so for many applications I think this is going to make action cameras a thing of the past in a way and it allows you to capture way more with your phone than you ever did before now it uses the ultra wide angle camera so the slight crop that it needs is less notice able than you would expect and it doesn't give you a full 4K file but it does give you a 2.8k file at 2430 frames per second all this footage that you're seeing here is upscaled to 4K and you're not going to notice much of a quality drop cinematic mode also had an upgrade because it is no longer limited to 1080p you can shoot up to 4K at 24 and 30 frames per second which makes it much more cinematic than it was at 108030 so I want to note that the iPhone 14 pro models are going to give you way more imaging options in terms of both Stills and video most notably because they have a three lens design but also all three cameras and all three lenses are upgraded and redesigned from the previous iPhone 13 the most notable is the main camera so we've got a brand new 48 megapixel type 1 over 1.28 sensor it is a 24mm equivalent F 1.78 it's got a 7 element lens design with a second generation sensor shift Optical image stabilization so Apple are actually using a slightly different technique for this particular sensor which is what is known as a quad Bearer filter design so what this does is it treats every four pixels as one color and so there's a couple different advantages to this without getting too technical has to deal with the way they de Mosaic the image and then it also has the to do with the way that they down sample it down to a 12 megapixel output so this is where I want to mention another thing is that typically all camera phones are pretty much standardized these days at 12 megapixels for an output even some of the 108 megap sensors that you've seen in other words they're not designed for a full 108 megapixel output so Apple's is a little bit different so we're using a 48 megapixel design it's got a quad Bayer filter and the way that it's going to work when you're just shooting in jpeg or high efficiency modes is it's going to give you a 12 megapixel image it has to do with having less noise and more detail and so what's cool though is if you're on one of the Pro Models you can shoot an apple Pro raw which will give you the full 48 megapixel file and they look incredible there's a lot of detail it's still there this is really done well and the other cool thing is that this sort of gives you a fourth lens in the end because Apple have a way of giving you a fourth lens in the UI and what you're doing is you're using that 48 megapixel sensor and you're cropping in so there's no digital Zoom there's nothing you're just using the center point of that sensor which gives you a 2X crop so in effect we have four lenses with the pro models of course the A6 bionic chip is also playing a major role here with image processing so I mentioned that the photonic engine allows deep Fusion to work pre-compression so this phone is able to do a lot more a lot faster in terms of computational Imaging you're not going to notice any of this it happens under the hood so when you take an image what happens is the iPhone will actually take a bunch of images and then it uses deep fusion and all this fast processing to actually bring together the best parts of all those really fast images that were sequenced off into something that retains detail gives you more dynamic range it's just a beautiful image in the end and they've gotten this to a point now where really looks good and a lot of this has to do with the new hardware but like I said earlier in this video it has to do with the new software too and the way that it's just matured over the generations so a few observations on iPhone 14 now I've only had this phone for about a week and I've done as much shooting and editing of the images as I possibly could I do want to do a more in-depth review as I've had more time with this phone it's one of my favorite systems because it's the one that's in your pocket and it's always with you so I want to have some time to dig deeper into it but I do want to give you a few observations that have noticed thus far but first of all the image quality is gorgeous especially in low light and I think that's where you're going to see the biggest performance boost if you move to iPhone 14 and specifically what I'm talking about is when you look at images and you see areas of the image where you have these low midtones as they're starting to go into Shadow detail and this is something that typically on phones is an area where it just gets a little mushy in terms of color definition well we don't see that with iPhone 14 it handles this extremely well and it gives you a new dimension to the types of images that you can take just using a phone and another observation that I want to point out is that I typically shoot everything in apple Pro Raw it's going to give me the most flexibility in post- production sure it is going to eat up more space on your hard drive or even in your iCloud account if you have things uploading and backing up in the cloud but for me it is worth it I will filter out images I don't want to keep and I tend to shoot raw because that's just where I'm going to get the most power and flexibility now there's a big difference between editing your images on the iPhone versus taking them into an external application like Lightroom now neither one of them is better than the other I would say but I've just noticed in general that when you edit in the phone I'm getting much better results and I think a lot of that has to do with the information that apple is storing in its raw file and a lot of times you'll bring these into Lightroom and you see images that are a little bit underexposed when they first come in or maybe Overexposed and it probably has to do with the way the phone has determined the exposure is going to look and in terms of what it can rescue in terms of highlight and Shadow detail so that's one thing to note I can get these to look really good in Lightroom but I've just noticed that they are really intuitive on the phone which brings me to another point which would probably be meriting doing its own video on one day but there is really no standard for raw format there is a DG file format but in terms of how things interpret raw files it's up to whatever software you're using and anyway I'm pointing this out because I want to make a note that the way that you're editing in the phone this software has become very powerful and very mature over the last couple iterations of this phone and I think for me if you're into content creation on your phone whether it's photography or whether it's video Work iPhone 14 is definitely worth the upgrade and if you're interested in learning a lot more about what goes on under the hood I've got a very special video that I'm going to be putting out tomorrow if it is live I will link it up here if you're watching this later or something otherwise come back tomorrow and check that out if you're into iPhone you're really going to dig it so anyway if you have any questions I will do more in-depth stuff with this phone down the road in terms of videos and I want to do a more comprehensive full review of the cameras when I've had more time with it so drop me a note in the comments if there's anything you want to see in there until the next video I'll catch you guys then laterin this video we are going to take a look at the new iPhone lineup from Apple I've been using the iPhone 14 the iPhone 14 pro as well as the iPhone 14 pro Max I've been using these phones for the
