RTX Laptops Are Here!

Nvidia's R-TX Laptops Are Here at CES 2019

You heard it correctly, Nvidia is finally bringing their R-TX graphics to laptops at CES 2019. According to Nvidia, starting January 29th, we'll have laptops with R-TX graphics inside us, and let's discuss the moment we're looking at our TX 2060, the desktop version of which is launching on January 15th. Our TX 2070 and 2080 graphics will be available in laptops in about three weeks' time from the 29th of January.

Nvidia said that there will be 40 different laptop models available with R-TX graphics, not counting different configurations of the same model. And out of these, 17 will likely feature max-Q designs, which are expected to result in thinner machines. However, it was not stated directly that there will also be non-max-Q versions available in the other 23 models, but based on their sizes, it is pretty safe to assume that they will also have some non-max-Q options.

Nvidia mentioned that there appears to be a trend towards thinner and lighter laptops featuring max-Q graphics. This is already evident in 2019, where we've seen more such designs coming out than any other year. Nvidia specifically listed three laptops which will be available with R-TX graphics: the MSI Ge62 by Terror, Aces' new Predator Triton 500, and an RT X version of the Scar-Hero, along with a new laptop called the Rog Mothership. Unfortunately, my Australian contacts were unable to hook me up with Soos at CES, so hopefully I can track them down.

The Triton 500 was listed with R-TX 2060 graphics, while the GS 6-5 and Arrow laptops are expected to have R-TX 2080 graphics. It's unclear what other options will be available for these models, but it's likely that they'll vary depending on the specific design of each laptop. The R-TX 20/80 performs similarly to a 1080 TI, so if we're able to get non-max-Q versions of this graphics card in laptops, it should provide a nice performance boost over what's currently available at the top end.

The first hour or more of the presentation at CES was dedicated to our R-TX demos, and while this is cool technology, they demonstrated real-time gameplay on the new RT X 2060. This is apparently coming in at $349 U.S. dollars. However, I'm still pretty skeptical based on what I've seen so far with desktop cards and max-Q designs, and I'll have to play it myself to believe it. It will also be very interesting to test and compare these R-TX models against the older GTX 10 Series versions, to see how well the cooling holds up or if the heat pipes need to be upgraded as a result.

I'm going to be checking out as many new laptops and other hardware as I can while here at CES 2019. If you're not already subscribed, get it done so that you don't miss anything specifically tomorrow. I've got appointments with both MSI and Gigabyte, so we'll be looking at the new Edge and hopefully the GS 65 and more models. Let me know what you'd like to see from those videos, keeping in mind that I'll probably be limited in what I can test for in their suite the day after.

I also have plans to meet with Dell, so I should see what they've got going on. I found a Lenovo suite today while walking around, and I'll try to hustle them about getting some review units – everyone was just getting set up today, so I wasn't filming anything even without detailed testing. If you were considering buying a laptop now, I'd at least wait a few weeks so that we can see how these R-TX laptops actually perform and find out their prices relative to the 10 Series models. Full detailed performance will of course have to wait until I get my hands on these new models for testing.

I've already got confirmation that I'll be receiving some Stinger, including Gigabyte's new Edge, so you should get subscribed as well and get your body ready for all sorts of laptop RTX testing to come.
