We're in Wolburg, Germany for the reveal of this - the refreshed Volkswagen Golf after a rocky year for Volkswagen thanks to dieselgate. The golf remains core to its success and in the UK it's the biggest seller for Volkswagen by far. So how important is the refresh golf of Volkswagen?
We spoke to the Brand's boss Dr Herbert de. The golf is Volkswagen's most important model, it stands really for the essence of the brand. It has high value, it's fun to drive, it's stylish. It's important for us worldwide: we sell it and we produce it in Mexico for the US, in China for China. I would say the core model of the brand.
We really improved the emissions: we are now on EU6 for all the diesel engines once again enhancing the catalytic systems substantially. And it's now within its class - one of the best performing cars when it comes to emissions. Probably it's the best engine in the market currently also on the gasoline side. We introduce a new generation of engines 1.5 L high technology engine, a low in emissions, low on consumption.
We are investing a lot in a substantial model update for the second half of the life cycle. As Dr D said, there's a new 1.5 L petrol which replaces the current 1.4 TSI. But there's no word on new diesels yet - other than they are currently being worked on.
A revised electric golf has also been announced with 186 6 M of range, 68 more than before. So how will the golf fit in among VW's electric plans such as the ID hatchback shown earlier this year? We are really intensively working on the successor of the golf 7 golf 8. It will be a major Milestone, uh - but it will come with the more traditional drift trins.
In parallel we are working on the ID and we will have parallel offers in the next life cycle. In how many years do you think an ID might outsell a golf in in major urban areas worldwide? There will be some regions where electric cars will be hugely incentivized, like China probably west coast of America - some regions in Europe.
There might be regions where we even don't offer the ID because electric cars won't play a major role for the next decade. And that is why we go really in parallel. What else is new about this updated car? Well there's revised design tweaks if you can spot them: they include new bumpers LED lights of standard and in more expensive models so-called animated flowing indicators.
The biggest change is the interior particularly the infotainment system. You can now control functions with hand gestures such as a stereo and taking calls - which is a first in this class of car. The touchscreen is also bigger across all models: the largest is 9.2 in and you can specify the golf with active info display.
This replaces traditional instruments in front of the driver for a second screen. There's some updated Safety Systems too: its autonomous braking system now recognizes pedestrians as well as cars, and there's traffic jam assist and there's also Lane assist which helps keep you in lane - and can even give steering input.
So that's it - the refresh golf which Volkswagen is hoping will help the Brand's transformation. For more about the car, go to autocar.co.uk and don't forget to subscribe to the autocar YouTube channel.
