The Mercedes-Benz GLC is a compact luxury SUV that offers a great driving experience, comfortable seating, and ample cargo space. For the driving position, there are many adjustments available, including seat height and lumbar support. The front seats are comfortable with power adjustments for both the driver and passenger, and they're also heated.
As we look at the GLC, we can see that the windshield is nice and wide, with eight pillars that aren't too thick. However, this does make it feel a bit more hampered when looking out of the rearview mirror. The rear seats have generous headroom and leg space, but you can't recline the seatbacks, so you end up sitting kind of upright.
The GLC features a power lift gate and a convenient whole car locking button that allows you to lock your entire car when you're done loading or unloading. We also found the cargo area to have pretty good space - it's at a good height for easy loading and has nice individual folds down the rear seats. There are also really convenient hooks for hanging grocery bags, as well as netted side pockets for storing small objects.
In terms of safety features, Mercedes-Benz puts a lot of emphasis on pre-safety systems that are designed to protect occupants in a crash and help position them optimally for crash protection. These include rear seat reminders, rear belt binders, and more. The GLC also comes standard with automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, and rear cross traffic alert.
We also opted for the driver assist package, which gives you lane centering assistance, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2024 GLC with a top safety pick rating.
However, when it comes to driving personally, we weren't too impressed with the GLC's performance. It didn't have enough power or refinement that we were hoping for. We found the acceleration to be laggy, with too much delay before the car gets going. Some testers even called the car "lethargic." But on the highway, the GLC is smooth and has enough power.
We also tested the GLC's handling, and our testers found it to be responsive, but not ideal. Large bumps came through in an overpronounced way - that is pretty uncharacteristic of a Mercedes. However, all three G-LGLC trims come standard with 18-inch wheels, which should provide a smoother ride.
The GLC also features a quiet cabin, with wind noise well-controlled on the highway and road noise barely even heard. But when it comes to fuel economy, we found that the mild hybrid system can be a bit finicky - the AC tends to ramp down when the engine shuts off, which can make the cabin get hotter and more humid.
Overall, the GLC is a decent SUV that offers a great driving experience, comfortable seating, and ample cargo space. We recommend opting for the first-tier premium trim and adding on features like the heated steering wheel and adaptive cruise control.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enI'm Emily Thomas and we're here today at the consumer reports test track and this is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC the 2024 GLC is fully redesigned it's based on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan which was also redesigned a year ago we purchased the 20124 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 formatic SUV the base price of $49 ,100 we got quite a few packages and options including the 19in multi-spoke wheels MB Tex dashboard with Nappa look the driver assistance package is $1,950 and we also got the dx1 exclusive trim at $2,250 with a destination price of $1,150 all of that came down to $58,900 our GLC has a 2 L inline four turbo Engine with mild hybrid and comes with 255 horsepower and 9-speed automatic transmission we purchased the optional all-wheel drive but rear wheeel drive is standard on All trim as you would expect with Mercedes there are really luxurious finishes inside for instance this matte wood trim that's really nice looking and has a nice texture to it the speaker panels have a really cool pattern with them but be careful if your hand brushes up against them because it can be a little bit Sharp the center console has this shiny piano black surface which looks really nice but it's also easy to scratch and easy to smudge the cabin has pretty good small item storage with these two nice covered bins in the center console there's two cup holders and there's even wireless charging for your phone the GLC has an 11.9 in infotainment screen now Mercedes has this mbux system which we don't always love a lot of times they put things too deep into the system menus and so it's hard to make adjustments while you're driving for instance there are some discrete climate buttons here where you can adjust the temperature and even the fan speed however if you want to be able to adjust where the fan is blowing and which parts of your body or even sink with your passenger you have to go into the climate menu we feel like you should be able to access those types of things without going deeper into menus while the MPX system is not overly intuitive it does offer you Wireless Apple carplay and Android auto steing wheel controls are touch capacitive which can be kind of annoying when you're driving and for some things like adjusting the volume or even adjusting the speed on your adaptive cruise control you have to use a sliding motion which when you're driving requires a little bit too much focus and dexterity so for driving position there are a lot of adjustments that are available to you like other Mercedes the way to adjust your seat is found here on the door panel unfortunately these buttons aren't always the most responsive and so it might take a few extra tries however to adjust your lumbar support that is down here on the side of the seat the front seats are pretty comfortable and have power adjustments for both the driver and the front passenger they're also heated which is a nice plus I found that I was able to see pretty well the front windshield is nice and wide the eight pillars are not too thick the rear windshield is pretty big and I'm able to see well out of it however the back pillars are pretty wide so it does make it feel a bit more hampered the rear seats have generous Headroom and leg space however you can't recline the seatbacks so you end up sitting kind of upright the GLC has a power lift gate and there's this really convenient whole car locking button so that you can lock your whole car when you're done loading or unloading we found the cargo area to have pretty good space designed to protect an occupant in a crash and even help position you optimally for crash protection I also love that this comes with a rear belt binder and rear occupant alert the rear occupant alert is designed to remind you at the end of a trip to check the back seat for any or anyone that you may have left behind however the way that Mercedes designed their rear occupant alert they've made the timing algorithm just too finicky and it could be improved upon the GLC comes standard with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection automatic emergency breaking that operates at highway speeds blind spot warning rear across traffic warning reverse automatic emergency braking automatic high beams and adaptive highbeam assist we also opted for the driver assist package which gives us Lane centering assistance Lane departure warning Lane keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the 2024 GLC with a top safety pick so now let's talk about the driving personally I wasn't that impressed driving the GLC it didn't have enough of the power and refinement that I was hoping for I really did not like the lag when you are accelerating the vehicle there's just too much of a delay before the car gets going some of our testers even called the car lethargic which I think is a pretty fitting description once you're on the highway the the GLC is pretty smooth and has enough power there's plenty of low-end torque which is good for when you're passing other cars or when you need to ramp up to highway speed here's how the GLC performed in consumer reports testing our testers found the GLC is handling to be responsive and it had enough steering feedback for the drivers we were pretty surprised by the lack of ride quality in the GLC large bumps came through in an over pronounced way that is pretty uncharacteristic of a Mercedes however all three G GLC trims do come standard with 18-in wheels which are likely to hybrid system now this typically helps Aid fuel economy and works with the engine stop star system one of the other benefits of a mild hybrid is that you're supposed to get uninterrupted climate control even when the engine does shut off because of the stop start however it's pretty surprising that in this GLC that's not how the mild Hybrid Works when the engine does shut off the AC tends to ramp down and so it gets hotter and more humid in the cabin which is exactly what the mild hybrid is supposed to prevent if you find this too annoying you can fortunately turn off the engine stop start with this really large button that's conveniently placed on the dash overall the GLC is a decent SUV we found the cabin to be nice and quiet it has great fuel economy for its segment and there's plenty of cargo space however we think the GLC might be lacking in that Ultra Luxury and refinement that Mercedes is known for we think the best version to get is the first tier premium trim we would
