Fixing my Porsche 911 on the cheap… But will it work _ Mat Vlogs

A Troublesome Engine Bay Flap and Catalytic Converter Conundrum

While driving down the motorway, I noticed something flapping around in the engine bay. It caught on one of the pulley wheels and started to wear away the plastic, eventually getting through to the wires. This incident served as a reminder that, when working on cars, damage can quickly escalate out of control. Thankfully, the situation was eventually resolved, but not before it presented a few challenges.

A Very Tricky Bit: Catalytic Converters

One of the most difficult parts of replacing catalytic converters is knitting them together. The process involves carefully connecting the two units to form a single, functioning system. This task requires great attention to detail and a steady hand. Fortunately, the individuals who solved the problem managed to label the converted before removing them from the car, which helped to identify which one went where.

Labeling the Catalytic Converters

The labels were necessary to ensure that the correct unit was installed in each location. This step is crucial, as incorrectly installing a catalytic converter can lead to reduced engine performance and potentially even damage to the vehicle's exhaust system. The person who solved the problem took great care to label the units before removing them from the car, which helped to prevent any mistakes.

Replacing the Catalytic Converter Header Gaskets

During the replacement process, it was discovered that the old header gaskets needed to be replaced. This is a common issue, especially when dealing with older cars like mine. The new gaskets were sourced from China and were found to be "shiny" in appearance. Despite their Chinese origin, they proved to be reliable and effective.

A Quick Fix: Starting the Engine Without Silencers

To test the engine's performance, we decided to start it up without silencers. This decision was met with skepticism by some viewers, who suggested that running the engine without silencers would produce an unpleasant sound. However, the end result was surprisingly pleasant, and many viewers expressed their preference for this unique sound.

A New Problem Arises

Despite the successful completion of the catalytic converter replacement, a new issue arose when we encountered problems with the exhaust system. The problem stemmed from the fact that the new catalytic converter did not match up properly to the existing unit. This caused a significant gap, which made it difficult to use the original clamps. Fortunately, some quick thinking and resourcefulness led to the discovery of an old clamp on hand.

Using the Old Clamp

The old clamp was used to secure the exhaust system in place, and it proved to be effective. The problem was resolved, and the car's engine began to run smoothly once again. This experience serves as a reminder that, even with the best planning and preparation, unexpected problems can still arise.

Silicone Spray for the Bushings

To address another issue, we decided to apply silicone spray to the bushings and front of the car. The polyurethane bushes had become dry over time, causing a creaking sound when driving over speed humps. The silicone spray was applied in an attempt to cure this problem, but unfortunately, it did not have the desired effect.

A Final Inspection

The completion of the repairs marked the end of our latest project. While everything seemed to be in working order, we would need to wait and see if the silicone spray had resolved the creaking issue. As usual, any further problems will be documented in future videos or updates on the channel.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwell here we are again with my Porsche 996 up on the ramp and my backup Paul's car welding here in Milton Keynes having more work done on my exhaust now I don't know if you saw my last video but basically at the seams done on the cars silencers and we found him one of the silencers was a big chunk of catalytic converter so one of my cats and God it's what I've done is bought some kinetic conversos mod line yeah I haven't gone for brand new ones I've got some secondhand ones from an old car about my age and I'm gonna fit them it may seem a bit counterintuitive like trying to scrimp and save on a Porsche but that's not the kind of guy I am that's why I have got a new Porsche of an old on the cheapest one you could buy the 996 also after I've fitted the catalytic converter as well as a dr. Paul speed up there's gonna be some other things to check on the car because issues its again so Paul it's only a month since your last 20 years 99 yeah so yeah I know exactly good quality bolts all they know is the only one that will come out so Paul is remove the silences and isn't bolted the cats but they are left dangling as you can see here look dangling by a thread well actually their oxygen sensors which we know you can unclip and we find out how to clip them by going on the internet good old internet has all the answers you could ever need oh that's the right thing that we're doing it definitely is that definitely yeah we're not exactly pause trained technicians you know he's got an exhaust not so much well good luck the problem that we have is that the actual catalytic converter and the oxygen sensors have now fused into one piece because well this cars twenty years old so we can't use my old lambda sensors and hopefully in this box is my well my old new catalytic converters they have loaned the sensors otherwise oh dear so here we have the catalytic converters are going to fit to the car and we can see look they have the oxygen sensors attached still which is a good thing there the car this has come off is actually 1999 like my car only it's done ninety thousand Mars my cars only done sixty one and it's left inside cat is dead so the people I got this off said that the car passed an MOT so it was running it's just that it had been smashed in at the front so yes so we get on so it looks like Paul's managed to figure out how to remove the clip without snapping the plastic connector which is a good thing so Connor let's let's remove the cat this is the dead cat isn't it yeah oh it's straining at the sensor look at that Oh shake it I can hit bit to move oh that's the mouse but is there any cap left in it this site there is you have not seen I mean it would have been conceived as you can see around corners now in this little box down here I have lots of clamps and bits and pieces for the car just in case they didn't come off so pause trying to remove a clamp there making it work at it because if he can remove it I can send this one back that I've bought and it's gonna same about fifty quid in total so come on Paul hammer away that's it come on come off yes that's 25 quid right there that is to get to the other connector for the right-hand-side lambda sensor we need to get in there there's not enough room so I'm gonna help Paul cuz I know how to do this I'm gonna remove the cars airbox it's just a Jubilee clip here for this mechanics with mats this could be a whole new series look at nice clean hands types right so that's that bolt there then there's a key thing is this which is I think it's connected to the mass air flow meter see if I can remove it without snapping it now I want to show you something on here see this it's got a little bit of tape on the reason is last time I took the airbox out what happened was I forgot to attach that back again and so this was flapping around in the engine bay while I was driving down the motorway and it kind of caught on one of the pulley wheels and just wore away the plastic and it actually got down to the wires but having come fully through them so so usually when I'm working on a car I end up doing more damage you can now get inside and Matt is now taking bookings for removal of parts now we've come to a very tricky bit once a way Paul has Paul's come to a very tricky bit this lady's intruder the catalytic converters here but you basically have to knit them together so here's a picture of it can you see that's the back into the car we weren't sure which cat went on what size but fortunately the people who solved it managed to label them up before taking them off the car baby look at this but here you'll see one has to go into the other so Paul's got a kind of tie a knot with metal come on Paul don't damage anything please don't damage anything how is it easy to do with the bumper off the left has to go in first pretty sure look look at the picture can I pull it anything yes you do it it's a one part I'm actually having to replace is the old catalytic 2 header gaskets so is the old ones these are the new ones I've had to buy Chinese shiny unfortunately they only cost me do you have lived your piece so things have been pretty fast I was going to the the house to just check on a few videos and stuff and when I came out a few minutes later Paul had fitted the caps and connected everything back up again now last time I had this song this is off the car a lot of people in the comments actually said why don't you just start it without the silencers so we're gonna do that now so go on Paul start it up ah right we've had the car connector to pulse power for it we were so hopefully it'll start now God give it a go thank God do some revs yeah yeah I like that now what later these vote on whether you think I should run it without silencer so who'd like the car to sound like this if you would let me know in the comments box below now all of this was going rather too well but we have finally encountered a rather annoying problem and this problem has resulted in us having to use the new clamps because those ones don't quite fit and the reason that don't fit is well what's happening is the exhaust isn't matching up to the cat hi when we took moth it's perfect but the new cat doesn't seem like a new the new old cat which is off an old car which is the same Ridge as mine so it should be exactly the same because it's a Carrera 23.4 1999 just like mine should meet up and they're not there's a big gap well there should be so when I said that it's just when it was nowhere near before I did it up and now it's kind of it looks pretty straight so could we get away with using the old comes again well have a look at it okay the old climb I'm gonna have let go of your gold clamp no that's 25 quid well the good news is is that importance managed to use the old pump on the other catalytic Vertis Oh save me some money 25 quid well the replacement cuts been fitted the exhaust about guard cars started with another jump and it all seems to be now the final thing we're going to do on the car is spray all the bushings and the front with this silicon spray because I think one of them has dried out slightly since I had been fitted the polyurethane bushes and so whenever I go over speed hump I get this creaking sound so hopefully this might cure it if not undercover live with it get to import all the jobs have been done the cats have been fitted and Paul has lubricated my bushings so hopefully the creep will have got now I won't know for sure until I drive it home but I'll let you know in the comments box below so have a look to see if that fix worked anyway thanks for watching right and rather than to comment to let you know whether the silicone on the bushing worked I thought I'd tell you direct because no it hasn't and now there's another problem with my car as well and I'm having to take it to the garage yet again and to find out more about that make sure you subscribe to the channel by hitting the
