The BMW 5 Series Touring: A Car that Lets You Relax and Let Technology Take Over

As I sat behind the wheel of the BMW 5 Series Touring, I was immediately struck by how easy it is to drive. The car has a feature called "Active Cruise Control" which uses radar to measure the distance to the car in front and adjust my speed accordingly. This means that as I cruise down the autobahn at 100 km per hour, the car is doing all the driving for me, steering, braking, and even adjusting its speed to match the speed limit. It's a wonderful feeling, just sitting back and relaxing while the car takes care of everything.

One of the things that impressed me about this car is how quiet it is. The bodywork on the 5 Series Touring is slightly different from the saloon version, which can make it slightly noisier, but I couldn't really notice any difference between the two. Even when there's wind noise or rain pattering against the roof, it's barely audible. And yet, despite its quietness, the car is incredibly comfortable to travel in. The air suspension at the back is self-leveling, which means that even if you load up the boot with heavy luggage, the nose of the car won't point skyward, and you won't end up dazzling other drivers at night.

Of course, one of the things that makes this car so impressive is its technology. With just a press of a button, I can switch between different modes - Comfort, Sport, or even a more aggressive setting called DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). In Comfort mode, the suspension is softened and the car feels like it's floating over bumps on these super-smooth German roads. And yet, with just another press of a button, I can stiffen up the suspension and make the car feel sharper, flatter, and more agile.

The engine choices for the 5 Series Touring are also impressive. The diesel options include a 2-liter engine producing 62mpg and 260 horsepower, or the 520d which will get from 0-60mph in just 7.1 seconds. But for those who want performance and economy, there's the petrol version, the 530i with all-wheel drive Xdrive. For my test drive, I was behind the wheel of the 530d, which has a beautiful 3-liter engine producing 265 horsepower. It will get from 0-60mph in just 5.8 seconds and boasts an incredible 620Nm of torque.

One feature that's worth noting is the sound system, which plays a kind of diesel rattle to give the impression of being in a car with a V8 engine, rather than a turbocharged inline-six like this one actually has. However, I have to admit it was a bit odd listening to that rattle while cruising down the autobahn.

No matter what you're doing behind the wheel of the 5 Series Touring, the 8-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and responsive. With paddle shifters, I can change gear myself if I want to, or switch to Sport mode and let the car do it for me. And when I'm driving at a steady speed, like on the autobahn, the gearbox will adjust its shifting to make sure it's always running smoothly.

In short, the BMW 5 Series Touring is a car that lets you relax and let technology take over. With features like Active Cruise Control, self-leveling suspension, and an impressive range of engine options, it's a car that's designed to make life easy for its driver. And with its comfortable ride and smooth gearbox, it's the perfect car to cruise around in on a long road trip.

The BMW 5 Series Touring starts from around £38,000, which makes it about £2,000 more than the equivalent Saloon. But if you're looking for a car that lets you relax and enjoy the ride, without having to lift a finger, then this is definitely worth considering. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enestate cars they're not particularly exciting right you know they're just for people who need a load of space and that's about it but what if you need a car that has plenty of space it's hugely practical it's also very comfortable luxurious looks good and it's designed to be fun to drive as well what kind of car could give you all that probably a car you can also maneuver by remote control a car such as the new BMW 5 series tour ring it promises Cutting Edge technology loads of space an exemplary Drive impressive luxury but does it deliver this particular car is in M sport trim so you've got the bigger front grill there and it's got the air curtain so the air goes in there goes over the side of the wheels and escapes through this breather here and it helps smooth the air flow and it helps this car be quite aerodynamic once again being M sport you've got bigger Wheels it's also lower by 10 mm than the the normal car all touring get the roof rails make it look like a LifeStar vehicle and of course you've got the lift back tailgate and I think personally the design of the touring just works slightly better than the saloon but what do you think click up there and vote which one you prefer the BMW 5 series Saloon or the touring for a big estate car the 5 series touring is quite a Sleek looking thing that slope tailgate does mean though that the low capacity isn't quite as much as you get with the boxier Mercedes E-Class estate but the 570 L available is still 50 L more than you get with a 5 series Saloon and the space is more useful too one of the great things about the 5 series touring is that you can just open the glass part of the tailgate don't bagging quickly then get out the rain been able to do that on every 5 series touring since they started the only problem is is that I've got to show you exactly the full features of this boot so yeah you can open it handsfree if you want and unlike some other systems it actually works pretty much every time you want to use it the Low cover moves up out of the way automatically and there's a separate netted divider as well you can remove both of these and then fit them under the space under the falce floor but the whole process is a bit of a fiddle the rear seats split three ways and you can lower them electrically from the boot to give a flat low bay with 1,700 L of space but what about if you want to carry people the back seats in the 5 Ser Saloon are roomy enough but the touring just seems a little bit more spacious now part of the reason for that is the fact that You' got that squarer body so you got a bit more head room because you don't have the back end sloping down quite so much I mean the salon's fine for Headroom but this one's even better what's really nice is the extra glass you get so that square body means that you've got squarer rear windows you've actually got larger rear windows and some extra rear windows there at the back and it just makes it nice and light back here the panoramic sunroof does help as well the car also gets BMW's latest infotainment system and it's a dream to use whether you operate it with a click wheel touchscreen or with voice commands however there's another input method BMW's new ey drive system has gesture controls so you can do things like turn up the volume of the stereo by just rotating your finger or just doing it the other way to turn it down on this particular car I can change the radio station by going like that flick my two fingers at it there we go sometimes you want to flick your two fingers that way when it doesn't work but you get the point one thing I do like is how you deal with telephone calls so let's say someone calls you there we go oh got Jack scotton calling me how handy is that if I want I can dismiss the call just by going no thank you I don't want to talk to you Mr Jack scotton no I really don't see can be a bit hit and miss that is quite a nice Gest to go go away I don't want to talk if IID wanted to answer it I'd just flick my finger at it like that but yeah on the whole I still find the gesture controls just a little bit trickier to use than the normal functions bit of a gimmick really there's another Gadget which to most people will also be a gimmick but to a few buyers it could actually be the best op extra ever if you're worried about being able to squeeze your Big 5 series touring into your narrow little garage and be able to get in and out of the car don't worry you can get it with BMW's remote control parking and you can drive the car forwards and backwards a little distance using the electronic key like that so you can reverse out of your very tight parking space and then hop into your car perfect you can get the car with another parking Gadget but this one will be useful to most people you can get this call with an amazing surround view camera system so if I just bring up the camera I can then put it into park camera mode and I can change the view to different angles but this is the best bit look you get this whole 3D rendered image like a computer game and you can actually use the jest control to then rotate it around the car look at this there we go now I want to show you this because this is quite interesting it even knows when I've opened the front door and it should open the front door on the graphic it'll do it for the rears as well I'm just wondering if it'll do for the boot let's find out so here's the rears will it do the boot as well has it done it has it done it no they've only measured it for the front and rear doors that's the next step for the designers they need to upgrade it so that you can actually see the boot open as well on the graphic but still that's really cool the technology doesn't end there though there's some to take the strain out of long Motorway Journeys such as the steering and Lane control assistant so one of the things it can do is read the lines in the road and it will actively steer the car to keep it within the lines now you're supposed to keep your hands on the wheel and if you take the marf it'll probably give you about 10 15 seconds of driving without your hands on the wheel before it'll warn you and then it'll shut down the system but I've noticed that if you just rest your knee on the steering wheel it pretty much thinks your hands on it and will just continue working so I'm just driving along on the autoban cruising at 100 km an hour the car is doing everything for me it's steering I've got the active cruise control on so it's keeping my speed and it's using radar to measure to the car in front so now the car in front is braking this car is breaking automatically it also reads the speed signs and I've got my cruise control set at 100 but it'll read that sign and then it suggests that I might want to change my setting on the cruise control and at the touch of a button I can reset my top speed again as that new speed limit so it's all dead easy you can just sit back relax and let the car do everything for you and stay within the law maybe I should drive like that just to be a responsible person but what about if you want to do the driving yourself one of the things about State cars is that because you got more body work for Sant to B around they can be a little bit noisier than the saloons on which they're based but I can't really tell how much difference between this and the Celine version of the 5 series it's such a quiet car anyway mean there's only any road or wind noise you can probably hear the rain noise but even then that's not too bad and it's a very comfy car to travel in as standard it gets air suspension at the back and it's self-leveling so that if you put a big heavy load in the boot the nose doesn't point skywood and you don't end up dazzling people at night when you got your lights on if you want you can upgrade the car to have adaptive suspension that's what this one's got I've got in Comfort mode at the moment and it's slackened off the suspension it's all nice and soft and kind of floating relaxing and it's iring out what bumps I can find on these super smooth German roads very very well press of a button I can put into sports mode and it stiffens things up and it just makes the car feel a bit sharper Corners flatter and this particular Five series touring is about 100 kilos lighter than the old one and as a result it's maybe a bit more agile that said it's still a big car goes on Corner as well but I wouldn't describe it as being particularly sporty engine choices in the 5 series touring include a 2 L Diesel and the 520d which will do a claimed 62 MP gallon 3 l petrols in the 530i or all-wheel drive 540i X drive but for those that want performance and economy there's the diesel I'm driving this particular car is the 530d and it's got a beautiful 3 L engine in it I mean it's absolutely lovely so it's got 265 horsepower it'll get from n to 60 in just 5.8 seconds and the most impressive thing about it is the pulling power so it's got 620 newm of torque so you put your foot down and it just it just Motors this thing and it sounds really good the only thing is though BMW is playing some engine sound through the speakers so the noise you hear isn't the noise that people on the outside hear they hear a diesel rattle you hear a kind of like almost like a V8 thrum it's a bit odd regardless of which Fire series touring you go for they all come as standard with an 8-speed automatic gearbox box comes with paddle shifters if you want to change gear yourself or if you want it to be sporty but you can't be bothered to change gears you put it into sports mode and then yeah it didn't off respond put your foot down it's on it straight away changing gears when you need it to it's very fast yet also very smooth perhaps for me the most impressive thing about this 5 series touring is how the weather is absolutely Dreadful when I'm filming on the inside of the car when I get to film the shots of the outside it's blooming lovely it's brilliant how they've done that the BMW 5 series touring starts from around £38,000 which makes it about £2,000 more than the equivalent Saloon
