The Grown-Up Makeover: Transforming the Barbie Dreamhouse Bathroom
As a producer at Nifty, I'm excited to share with you my latest project - giving the iconic Barbie Dreamhouse a grown-up makeover. After completing the living room, bedroom, and kitchen, it's time to tackle the last major room of the house - the bathroom. While I don't have any major complaints about this bathroom, I do think we can make it feel more sophisticated and relaxing by introducing some popular decor trends and items.
To start, I'm covering up these panels from the wall, which already has a nice original pattern. However, I want to cover up these small knick-knacks on the floor, like the trash can, as they don't quite fit my ultimate vision for this bathroom. Next, I'm giving this bathroom more storage - a crucial aspect of any bathroom design. After some deliberation, I decided to use this plastic box that I've been using for tea lights in the past. I trimmed it down to create a basket, which is a quick and easy solution.
I must admit, I was inspired by an original tutorial that used a pillowcase as the insert for the basket. So, I created my own version out of scrap fabric and cut up some old kitchen cloth to use as towels - they turned out super cute! I also tried to create a two-section hamper, but unfortunately, there wasn't enough space in the bathroom for it. However, I still want to share it with you because I really like how it looks.
Now that we have storage sorted, let's talk about some greenery - or rather, a hanging macrame planter. This looks intimidating at first glance, but trust me, it's actually quite easy to make. The trick is to tape the two ropes together on one end to make it really pointy, so the beads will just slip right through. Once you're ready to tie the ropes, simply snip them off when needed, and you can adjust the size by undoing the knot.
This macrame planter is a great way to add some texture and visual interest to the bathroom. And, let's be honest, who doesn't love a good hanging planter? Next up, I'm working on my personal favorite project - a toilet brush holder that resembles a regular toilet brush using an extra funnel brush. I also use elaborate reusable straws for this purpose. To create the grippy handle area, I'll be shortening it and using air dry clay.
This may not seem like a crucial item for the makeover, but I think it's one of my favorite projects from the whole series - a nod to my care-obsessed generation, no less! Moving on, I'm giving this bathroom a rustic touch by creating a bath tray complete with an iPad and Netflix watching. This is inspired by my video on making a wooden bath mat.
To give the bathroom a spa-like feel, I'll be using wooden bath mats - according to experts, that's what makes a bathroom truly relaxing. And, let me tell you, this is exactly how I want my bathroom to feel like - a spa! Last but not least, I'm giving the bathtub and toilet a few coats of spray paint for an updated look.
Finally, it's time to add some art to the bathroom - or rather, a splash of color with paint pouring. This technique has been super popular lately, thanks in part to its satisfying quality. While it may require a bit more paint than I expected, I'm excited to see the result. It looks like marble, but if you cut open a geode, it's reminiscent of that natural beauty.
And there we have it - the dream bathroom is finally complete! It feels clean and spacious, with plenty of good ventilation and light, which is exactly what I've been searching for in my apartment hunting experience so far. Now that we're done with the four main rooms of the house, I'll be thinking long and hard about how to tackle the closet, elevator, and secret roof hangout. Until then, I hope you're enjoying the summer, winter, or rainy season - wherever you are from, please let me know in the comments below!
