Will AT&T's DirecTV Now streaming offer entice even more cable cutting

It's Monday, November 7th, and if you're a cable TV cord cutter, it looks like there's an interesting option on the horizon according to Variety. AT&T is going to give streamers free Apple TVs and Amazon Fire TV sticks with its new $35 per month streaming TV service. This new service will be called Direct TV Now. Customers who sign up for a 3-month run of the service will get an Apple TV streaming kit, while month-to-month users will get an Amazon fire TV stick for free.

Variety reports that AT&T is lining up content channels for the service and so far, HBO, ESPN, Disney, AMC, Viacom, and some other heavy hitters are on board. However, it's worth noting that this doesn't seem like a trial run, as the streaming service will not be dependent on the availability of individual channels. Bloomberg is also stating that streaming, not cable or satellite, will be AT&T's primary TV platform by 2020.

Moving on to AI-related news, we have some interesting stories following the disaster that is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. The South Korean Electronics giant is focusing on the upcoming Galaxy S8 flagship phone and it could get a new dedicated AI built in order to compete against Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa, and so on.

Samsung has copyrighted the name Bixby, and just last month, the electronics giant bought up Viv, an AI designed by the same team that created Siri. The new S8 is expected to debut at Mobile World Congress in February and will likely come in 5.1 and 5.5 variations. Other rumors include a dual camera system but one more oriented to low light performance rather than making pretty portrait pictures.

It's worth noting that Samsung wants to smarten up its AI, and what do you think would be the best approach? One suggestion is to sit down with Steven Hawking watching Cosmos with Neil degrass Tyson reading all of Maryland Savant columns. This seems reasonable, but Google has other ideas they're having their AI Deep Mind play Starcraft 2 because nothing apparently works better at creating a touchy-feely AI than battling alien hordes with insanely powerful energy weapons.

We are so doomed, says Google, but in reality, the company believes that playing Starcraft 2 will teach its apparently teenage AI to better deal with the intricacies of everyday life by having to make rapid fire decisions and coordinate simultaneous tasks. So, Deep Mind will either emerge victorious from its marathon gaming sessions or be mad as H at being taken down by a tween in Saskatchewan.

And finally, it's worth mentioning that teaching an AI to play The Sims was just too obvious, so that's not going to happen for Google. But we did get to learn about the latest news and rumors from the world of tech, and we hope you enjoyed this article as much as we did. Be sure to get your vote in tomorrow, and thanks for watching DT daily.
