Welcome to HGTV Handmade with Meg, where we're getting ready for Halloween by making something that will make your house feel just a little bit haunted. It's October, which means it's time to get creepy and come up with some creative ideas to scare our friends and family.
As I'm working on this project, I have to admit that I'm feeling a bit self-conscious about my own level of creepiness. I mean, who wants to be around someone who's just awkwardly trying to be spooky? But hey, that's what makes this project so much fun - we're all in it together! So, let's dive in and see how you can create your own haunted decorations for Halloween.
First things first, you'll need a few basic supplies. You'll need pingpong balls, permanent markers, Baker's twine or thread, a needle, and scissors. That's right, those same pingpong balls that we use to play table tennis are going to become the stars of our show. Don't worry if they seem like an unusual choice - trust me, they're perfect for creating spooky eyeballs.
To start, take one of your pingpong balls and draw a small black circle in the center. This is your pupil. Next, add a larger circle around it in green or blue and fill it in. That's your iris! Now, let's add a little something extra to make our eyeball look even creepier. Take your permanent marker and start drawing some squiggly lines in red coming from the area around the iris all the way to the back of the eyeball. Space them out a bit and connect the lines on the back so they look like bloodshot veins.
I'm getting really into this now, but be careful - these are slippery little suckers! Keep adding pupils and irises and bloodshot lines until your eyeball looks complete. And don't worry if you smudge it - just add a little more blood to the bloodshot look and play it off as intentional. I totally meant to do that!
Now, let's move on to the next step. We're going to take our Baker's twine or thread and cut a piece that measures 2 yards long. Thread one end of the twine through the eye of your needle and tie a little knot with a loop on the other end. I think the eyeballs look best spaced out with about 5 inches in between them, but you can always just eyeball it (get it? Eyeball it?). Laying a yard stick out helps keep those even, but feel free to adjust as needed.
Take your needle and poke it through one side of the eye and push it through to the other side. You want the pupil to be right in between these two points. Pull the eyeball all the way down the twine so it's about 5 inches away from the loop and knot. And don't forget to add a little dollop of glue to the side where the twine meets the ball to secure it.
Now, repeat the process for each eyeball you have. I made some eyeballs with bloodshot lines and some without, and I alternated them all - it looks like a super scary creepy collection from many different people. Add the eyeballs and little dollops of glue until your garland is filled, then let the glue dry. And voila! You have a Halloween garland made out of eyeballs.
I'm so excited to show off my finished project, but I want to hear from you too! How are you going to make your house feel haunted this Halloween? Are you going to create a spooky atmosphere with dim lighting and creepy decorations, or maybe try something new like a ghostly projection display? Whatever your plan is, be sure to let me know in the comments below. And don't forget to check back here all month long for excellent Halloween decor and costumes - hint: Gracie's involved next week!
