Sony Xperia Ion Hands On Overview - Geekyranjit

**A Closer Look at the Sony Xperia Ion**

The Sony Xperia Ion is a smartphone that offers impressive specs and features, considering its price point in India, which starts around 21,000. One of the notable things about this phone is its battery life, with a non-removable 1900mAh battery that powers the device.

**Specs and Features**

When it comes to storage, the Xperia Ion comes with 16GB of internal storage, divided into two parts - 2GB for apps and the rest for data. Additionally, the phone supports microSD card expansion up to 32GB, making it easy to manage storage space. The Android version on this phone is 4.0.4, which is IC (Indian Country) based. Although Sony has mentioned that the Xperia Ion will receive Jelly Bean updates, as of now, no update is available.

**Display and Display Performance**

The Xperia Ion boasts a display that supports the Mobile Bravia Engine, which provides better image quality and viewing angles. However, one aspect that was disappointing to note was the lack of an auto-brightness sensor in this phone. As a result, users have to manually adjust the brightness levels. Another notable feature that's missing from this phone is the Quick Toggle feature, which allows for quick access to settings.

**Web Browser and Performance**

The Xperia Ion comes with a web browser that offers a comfortable typing experience, even considering the small size of the keyboard. When browsing websites, the phone loads pages quickly, and the pinch-to-zoom gesture works smoothly. Additionally, the Timescape UI is available on this device, which provides users with access to active widgets running on the phone.

**Camera Capabilities**

The Xperia Ion boasts a 12MP camera, which is capable of capturing decent images. However, due to the lack of autofocus and T-to-Focus functionality, image quality may vary in certain situations. The camera also lacks scene selection options, making it more difficult for users to capture specific shots.

**Camera Review**

In our hands-on review of the Xperia Ion's camera, we noticed that the focusing time was quite long, which could be a drawback for users who prefer faster focusing times. Nevertheless, the image quality is acceptable, with limited noise in low-light conditions. The flash did not fire on this particular photo taken without it, but overall, the images are clear and well-exposed.

**Conclusion**

The Sony Xperia Ion offers impressive specs and features at an affordable price point. While some features like auto-brightness sensor and Quick Toggle are missing, the phone still provides a smooth browsing experience and decent camera performance. As of now, no Jelly Bean update is available for this device, but it should receive one shortly. With its 12MP camera and sleek design, the Xperia Ion is definitely worth considering for users in the market for a new smartphone.

**Additional Features**

When using the keyboard on the web browser, we noticed that haptic feedback was provided while typing. This feature enhances the overall user experience and provides tactile feedback to users. We also tested the camera's ability to capture images of various objects, including an Android Mini PC, with mixed results.

**Testing Camera Capabilities**

We took several photos using the Xperia Ion's camera to test its capabilities. The device performed well in terms of image quality, but the lack of autofocus and T-to-Focus functionality limited our ability to capture sharp images. We'll need to delve deeper into the camera review to provide a more detailed analysis.

**Testing the Timescape UI**

The Timescape UI on the Xperia Ion is an innovative feature that provides users with access to active widgets running on the phone. By swiping down from the top, users can view all available widgets and switch between them seamlessly. While this feature is convenient, we noticed that it could be more intuitive to use.

**Additional Settings**

During our testing, we found that the Sony Xperia Ion's settings were not as user-friendly as expected. The Quick Toggle feature was missing, making it necessary for users to access settings manually. However, the Timescape UI provided an alternative way to manage widgets and switch between them.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi there this is ranit from tas.com and this is a Sony Xperia Ion Android phone and again you might be wondering why am I introducing this phone now because this phone was launched around 7 months back the reason for that is as of April 2013 at least in India the price of this phone has dropped uh significantly when this phone was actually launched in India it was launched at around 32,000 and it uh after a couple of months it quickly came down to 27,000 but now Sony has dropped the price to uh around 21,000 to 21,500 and I feel for that price uh the phone is excellent because it has some very impressive specs uh let me talk about them the first let me talk about the overview on the top we have this 3.5 mm Jack nothing else and on this end we have the power button uh the volume rocker and again uh a dedicated switch for the camera button moving towards the bottom we have the microphone and actually nothing else and on this side we have this opening and where this flap opens it has the micro USB slot that'll be used for charging and syncing and also a micro HDMI so that you can connect it to your television but again Sony does not provide any cables in the box so you have to purchase them separately and moving towards the back also we have a 12 map camera LED flash opening for the speaker Grill and the Xperia logo again the back is not plastic but it's aluminium and the fit and finish of the phone is very good and the phone is also very comfortable to hold uh coming to the processor it comes with a 1.5 GHz dual cord processor 1 gigs of RAM and adreno 220 GPU the front-facing camera is a 1.3 map and it can also shoot video in 720p HD we have a gorgeous what do you say 4.55 in uh LCD screen and it's a full 720P HD screen that means it has a resolution of uh 720x 1280 which comes to a PPI of around 323 and again I have to say the screen is really good and the text is really crisp let me uh also show you that we have these four uh what do you say capacitive type touch buttons at the bottom this is the menu button home back and the search again we have the Sony logo at the bottom and uh this phone does have what do you say a removable back cover you just open this like this and you can add a Sim card and you can also add a micro SD card up to 32 GB by default the storage that it comes is 16 gigs uh the battery is sadly non removable it's a 1900 mamp battery so as you can see the specs are very good and considering the price point at which it sells now in India around 21,000 it's I would say a very good deal let's look at the Android version also that comes with this one and if we go to about the phone it comes with the Android version 4.0.4 that is IC and Sony has I just check their Blog has mentioned that this Xperia Ion will get the Jelly Bean update but as of now shooting this video the date is April uh 11th uh 2013 uh the update is not there but it should be shortly getting the Jelly Bean update now let's also look at the storage uh we get that 16 GB of storage again uh out of that it's divided in two parts we get 2 GB for your apps and the rest of the storage that's about 11.24 GB also you can add a Micro SD card to this phone to expand the storage so in terms of storage you shouldn't have a problem with this phone and let me just get out let's also look at the display and as you can see this phone does support the mobile Bravia Engine but if you go to the brightness one thing I found irritating is that it does not have the auto brightness sensor which is kind of disappointing I was expecting that this phone will have that so you have to manually uh adjust the brightness also one more thing that uh I found is that Sony does not provide the quick toggle stray here so to majorly change everything you need to go to the settings all the time now uh we are connected to our Wi-Fi network and let's uh switch on the web browser and let's go to our website this is the keyboard it looks very stock I would say but again considering the size of the phone uh it's very comfortable to type and let's click this one and let's try the the pinch to zoom again on this page it's really uh nice I would say and let's open our website that's tas.com and again as you can see it's loading it fairly quickly I would say let's try the pinch to zoom gesture again here and that's also nice let's force it to the full desktop version now let's open up one of the stories let's open the Sony Experian ZL story and we have a YouTube video that's embedded on this web page let's change the orientation and that was also pretty quick I would say and let's try to play back this YouTube video that's embedded for some strange reason uh it's not able to play back the video I'll check the settings and yeah it's able to play but the aspect ratio is a little bit weird so I'll test that a little bit more in my you say full review and uh let's also try to go to a one more site that's like say news.com and the keyboard gives you haptic feedback and yes I would say it loads the websites fairly quickly I would say and the pinch to zoom guesture is also uh fairly smooth and it runs the Timescape UI as you can see the Sony Timescape UI and you get this gesture if you do this it shows you all the active widgets that are running on the phone and Sony says that it has a 12 megap camera so let's quickly have a look at that one also let me fire up the camera and it's taking some time okay no SD card available changing to internal and this is my EXP Z so let's uh see actually very limited options yeah resolution is a 12 map flash is at Auto me go back GE tagging okay so we don't get this T to focus functionality scene selection is auto let's change that uh let's go to normal now tap to focus is not there or maybe I'm just missing so let's take this snapshot and actually it took without the flash it's at Auto let's also take a photograph of this Android Mini PC the focusing is taking some time I can see that and let's review those photos so this is the Android Mini PC again I would say uh pretty clear there is a little bit of noise because the FL flash did not fire but overall very clean picture and this is Xperia Z again looks nice so I'll be testing this uh camera a lot more in my full review so that's it for now for this quick look at this Sony Xperia Ion so if you have any particular questions regarding this phone do post them in the YouTube comments below I'll try to include them in my review that's it for now this is ranit from tech.com and I
