2024 Toyota 4Runner – Which to Buy

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner is a vehicle that has been updated and refined to make it even more capable off-road, while still maintaining its comfort and features on paved roads.

The base model 4Runner SR5 trim starts at $44,900 for two-wheel drive or $46,785 for four-wheel drive. At the time of recording, there was a $750 discount available on these models. The SR5 premium trim adds on some nice upgrades such as heated side mirrors, an accessory cargo net to keep groceries in check, and auto dimming rearview mirror. Additionally, navigation is now standard on this trim level.

Moving up to the TRD off-road trim, things get even more serious with four-wheel drive only available on this model. The side mirrors are still heated but lose their integrated turn signal feature. A set of TRD off-road badges are applied and the lower trim in the fascia is silver instead of body-colored. Inside, the trim returns to fabric and the front passenger loses power adjustability. Toyota includes a set of TRD off-road floor mats, but more importantly, you now get multi-terrain select and crawl control switches on the overhead console. This gives you a more useful vehicle off-road with active traction control and a locking rear differential.

The approach and departure angles are improved, and the ground clearance rises from 9 inches to 9.6 inches. There's also more protection underneath with the addition of a skid plate for the transfer case. Perhaps most importantly, you now have the option to add Toyota's kinetic Dynamic suspension system (KDSS), which is an excellent setup for hitting the trails.

Moving up to the TRD off-road premium trim essentially does the same thing as the non-premium TRD off-road did to the SR5 premium. This means you get soft-touch trim, heated seats and steering wheel, and the added navigation system. KDSS is still an optional extra but it's a really good one. The starting price of the 4Runner off-road premium is $48,200 including a $750 discount.

The fanciest 4Runner is up next with the Limited trim. This model gets a reworked front fascia compared to all other versions. The headlights are Auto-on, and the wheels are back up to 20 inches. The door handles have a touch sensor for lock and unlocking, but you lose the mud guards. However, the power moonroof is now included inside. You get dual-zone climate control, perforated leather trim on the heated seats, and the premium JBL audio system. You ditch the off-road goodies and are back to the sport-tuned suspension like on the TRD Sport.

Finally, there's the King of the Hill for the 4Runner: the TRD Pro Model. It's expensive but also wickedly capable too. You get the skid plate protection but with an aluminum skid plate stamped onto it. The wheels are matte black 17-inch TRD Alloys wearing all-terrain tires, and there's a TRD roof rack up top. The TRD Pro badges are blacked out, and of course, you have a multi-terrain monitor system so you can see what's going on to the front sides or rear of the truck when you're off-road. You get the top-tier audio system, soft-touch trim, and heated seats. However, like the TRD Pro before it, this model does not come with KDSS either.

In conclusion, the 2019 Toyota 4Runner offers a range of options for buyers looking for an off-road-capable vehicle. From the base SR5 trim to the top-of-the-line Limited trim, each model has its unique features and upgrades that cater to different needs and preferences.
