The Mainspring: Master and Dynamic's Wireless Headphones Make a Statement
Master and Dynamic, a New York-based company, has been making waves in the premium headphone game with their latest release, the MW50 on-ear wireless headphones. This three-year-old company is catching up quickly, and if the MW50 is any indication, they're doing it right. These beautifully designed headphones not only look great but also boast solid build quality and excellent sound, making them one of our favorite new wireless headphones in the genre.
The first thing that caught our attention was the classy design of these headphones. The moment we saw them online, we knew we had to get a closer look. And boy, were we right! In person, they're even more stunning than we expected. The solid build quality is evident, with stainless steel and aluminum used in their construction. You can feel the tension in the band as you put them on, which ensures a comfortable fit that's neither too tight nor too loose.
The leather on top is made of genuine Co hiide, while lamb skin leather adds an extra layer of comfort. The mesh panels allow for excellent airflow and breathability, making these headphones ideal for extended wear. We were also pleased to see the screen covering 40mm Bumann drivers, which provides a clear and detailed sound signature.
One area where we did notice some minor issues was with the earpads. They tend to get oily fairly quickly, but a simple cleaning with warm water and a rag resolved the issue. However, this is a minor complaint compared to the overall exceptional quality of these headphones.
The MW50 features onboard control, including an easy-access power switch, LEDs that indicate battery life and pairing, and volume controls on the side. The microphone for fielding phone calls is also a nice touch. On the bottom, you'll find a standard 3.5mm input in case the battery runs out, which can be plugged into to keep the headphones powered up. The USBC charging port offers rapid charging, making it an excellent feature for those who want to get the most out of their headphones.
Speaking of accessories, Master and Dynamic includes a nice selection with these headphones, including a soft pouch that fits them perfectly. The case is durable and allows the headphones to pack in neatly, making it easy to take them on-the-go. We also appreciate the option to choose between a hard or soft case.
One of our favorite features of these headphones is their comfort level. The marshmallow pads are incredibly soft and feel like a joy to put on. They adjust easily on the axis, allowing for a secure fit that's neither too tight nor too loose. While we would have liked just a bit more padding on top, it's an minor complaint in an otherwise exceptional design.
The sound signature of the MW50 is also worth mentioning. It's warm and full in the low registers, with crystal-clear accuracy up top. Details like textures and instrumental separation are all remarkably impressive, even when compared to wired headphones. The soundstage is surprisingly wide, allowing for a great amount of room for instruments to occupy themselves.
Of course, no premium headphone would be complete without a hefty price tag. And the MW50 is no exception, with a $450 price point that's sure to deter some listeners. However, Master and Dynamic makes it clear that these headphones are built to last for decades, and you'll always get a premium product for your money.
If you're looking for a gorgeous pair of headphones that are comfortable and have exceptional sound quality, the MW50 is definitely worth checking out. With its sleek design, solid build quality, and impressive sound signature, it's clear that Master and Dynamic has hit the nail on the head with their latest release.
