Apple has Unveiled a 4K Upgrade to its Apple TV Streaming Box
Apple has recently unveiled a 4K upgrade to its Apple TV streaming box, giving users the ability to watch high-resolution and high dynamic range content through the device. This new upgrade is a major surprise for fans of the brand, and it's expected to give Apple a significant advantage in the market.
One of the biggest surprises of the new Apple TV 4K is the automatic updates to existing iTunes HD movie library - 4K HDR for free along with out 4K movie purchases and rentals will be the exact same price as even paying for HD. This will be a major selling point for streamers, as the competition charges more for 4K content. By offering this upgrade for free, Apple is expected to attract a large number of customers who are looking to upgrade their streaming experience.
The new Apple TV 4K can output video at a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels, making it capable of displaying HD content on connected 4K televisions. This means that users will be able to enjoy high-quality visuals on their big-screen TVs, without having to sacrifice any of the clarity or detail that they've come to expect from modern streaming services.
In addition to its improved video capabilities, the new Apple TV 4K also includes support for high dynamic range (HDR). HDR is a technology that allows for more vivid and lifelike visuals, with greater contrast and color accuracy. This means that users will be able to see a more detailed and realistic picture on their screens, which can make for a much more immersive viewing experience.
The added 4K support is available for both owned and rented copies of films available in the store, and requires at least a 15 megabit per second connection in order to stream established services. This means that users will need to have a fast internet connection in order to take full advantage of the new Apple TV's capabilities.
To enable 4K content on the Apple TV, streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video will be updating their TV OS apps. This will allow users to access a wide range of 4K content, including films and shows that have been available on other devices for some time. The addition of 4K support to the new Apple TV brings it in line with a number of other major streaming devices on the market, such as Amazon's Fire TV, Google's Chromecast, and streaming devices from Roku.
Competitors are touting their own 4K streaming capabilities as a commercial advantage over the Apple TV. However, by offering 4K content for free, along with a range of other features and improvements, Apple is looking to make a strong case for its new device in the market.
To handle the high-resolution video, Apple has updated the internals of the new Apple TV 4K to include a 10x fusion processor. This processor is set to be twice as fast as the one found in the fourth-generation Apple TV, with four times the graphics power. The six cores included in the 10x fusion will be split up to work on apps and background processes, and will be bolstered by three gigabytes of memory.
The new Apple TV 4K will be offered alongside the existing fourth-generation Apple TV from September 22nd, with pre-orders starting September 15th. Two different capacities will be available, with a 32-gigabyte model priced at $179 and a 64-gigabyte version priced at $199.
