The Car Buying Experience: A Reluctant Acquisition
I walked into the car dealership with one goal in mind - to find the perfect car. I had done my research, scoured the lot, and finally found a beautiful BMW that caught my eye. The red interior was a standout feature, but I wasn't willing to overlook any potential flaws. As I approached the salesperson, I could sense their excitement about making a sale.
"Hi there, welcome to our dealership," they said with a smile. "We've got a great selection of cars today. What can I show you?" I explained my desire for a reliable car and asked if they had anything in stock that fit the bill. The salesperson nodded enthusiastically and led me to a nearby car. "This is a real gem," they said. "It's a BMW, with all the bells and whistles." I was intrigued, but as we began to discuss the car's features, my doubts started to surface.
The transmission had an issue, with a check engine light that wouldn't go away. The clutch was weak, and the salesperson seemed hesitant to take it for a spin. "Let me show you what's going on," they said, flipping through some files. "We've had issues with the timing chain, but we're not sure if it's a major problem." I was skeptical, but the salesperson assured me that a quick inspection would reveal any potential problems.

But as we continued our inspection, some positive findings emerged: the brakes were good, the tires had plenty of life left, and the suspension was still within its warranty period.
Before we could even consider taking the car for a spin, we needed to diagnose the transmission. "It looks like it's going to be fine," the salesperson said reassuringly. But as we continued our investigation, doubts began to creep back in. Perhaps this wasn't the deal I thought it was? The price tag seemed too good to be true.
The only saving grace? If the transmission turned out to be faulty, my repair bill would still be under $15 grand - a relatively low estimate compared to what I'd seen elsewhere. Despite the many red flags and doubts that lingered in my mind, I couldn't help but admire German engineering. It seemed, at least for this particular car, it was a case of "you can't have everything."

something five seven years ago for under 10 grand the options were plentiful but probably the best choice was the E46 BMW M3 but that ship has long since sailed and now probably a nice example with around 100 000 miles in a coupe manual is about a 20 or 25 000 car same goes for pretty much everything else everything interesting that used to be a ten to fifteen thousand dollar car under 10 if you get one a little bit scruffy but nowadays well there's really nothing left except well I think this this 2008 Audi S5 Coupe which this one was the cheapest in the USA with a manual transmission it only cost me sixty nine hundred dollars nice if I called up the car Wizard and told him that I got this and it has some misfire codes and some other things which we'll get into in a little bit and he said oh Audi timing chain no no no no no no I'm not doing that uh check in with the card ninja called up the car ninja and he said well I guess so the car ninja will be looking at this car today with me but really I don't think it's that bad the early Audi V8s certainly did have their timing chain issues which is a big deal because it is on the back of the engine requires removing it removing anything on an Audi is just such a big deal but with these later engines it's not as big of a problem although it was a problem on the Audi R8 that I tried to give my wife for Christmas that I ended up hunting same engine which is the coolest part of this car you get the normally aspirated V8 that you would find in the Audi R8 in the V8 model line the V10 yes it is really cool the Lamborghini inspired V10 but at 100 000 miles you don't want to own one of those cars these V8s are pretty Rock Solid and reliable fingers crossed there and you get a six-speed manual transmission so you get an hour eight except the engine is in the front and you get the added practicality of a rear seat still the Quattro all-wheel drive which is an Audi staple and you get this gorgeous styling yes Audi was kind of German car Enthusiast salvation in the mid 2000s when BMW went all crazy going from the greatest lineup ever to the Bengal butt and the car styling that followed and then the unreliability that followed Audi took its place the transporter drove a BMW in the first Transporter movie and then an S8 in the second movie and Beyond Iron Man pulled up in an Audi R8 and blew everybody's mind in the first Iron Man movie but a lot of people noticed pepper pots driving around in an Audi S5 V8 much like this now the R8 well it hasn't depreciated very much of anything they've appreciated close to the MSRP if they have the Gated transmission but this thing well it's a cheap used car you can see them for sale selling on cars and bids bring a trailer all over for under fifteen thousand dollars you can find some scruffy examples for ten thousand and under and that's what I found right here when it comes to a baller on a budget mentality I mean this fits the bill so well but I haven't taken nice was a great deal on this Audi S5 but it was a trade-in at the local Hyundai dealer that's how I got it and when somebody's fleeing their German car and running into the arms of Korea when it comes to reliability well alarms in your head start to go off but in this case it may not be that bad cosmetically this thing is in really good shape just normal wear and tear the only weird part on this car is this corner right here which you can see I'm don't know what got caught in there and they touched it up but otherwise very very nice that's all left over from the Jag that's left over from another car that used to be up here it's leaking out of the lift but as you walk around you have nice tires you have these really nice looking wheels that aren't all chewed up all around this beautiful Coupe body style I think it's understated classy but also distinct enough I really really like the styling of this car the big giant sunroof is pretty darn cool and when you walk around this thing it just looks really sharp you have the S5 badge to show that it's special down here you can see the muffler tips they aren't stocked it actually says Meister shaft I believe yes Meister shaft so we have an exhaust to make this V8 sound even better and then you go inside the silver color well very much Audi very much business like but you go inside and you get a little bit of fun here with the red seats the red inserts on the door panels and a very very nice place to be with only minor wear here in the bolster otherwise it's all aging very very well 109 000 miles all this it just looks very modern it doesn't look dated yet you can see the sunroof has a sort of weird partition here that doesn't work all that well but it exists I'm sure some finagling can get it to work and you have a back seat that is pretty spacious one weird thing though I'm not sure why the lights are this dim and orange when it comes to your map lights it's here in the back as well I didn't think howdy did that maybe they've just sort of aged out and turned orange and as you can see I was already playing with it the six-speed manual transmission which is very very fun on this car has a little bit of an issue though we'll get into that in a little bit but the power to that six speed comes from a wonderful V8 under the hood about 340 horsepower and when you look under here it does look really really nice typical Audi very very tough to reach things as far as the belt service the whole nose has to come off like I said the timing Chain's in the back so fingers crossed it's not that but you can see it has an aftermarket intake as well as the exhaust so this thing does sound really really darn good so when you walk around and look at this thing there are no obvious issues it looks really really nice holding together really well and that is mostly the case until you start driving it unfortunately and then the issues become quite obvious which we are going to do now take it directly to the car ninjas and see what he thinks foreign so I'd never driven an S5 before this one and listen I was very very impressed that noise especially with that exhaust just sounds fantastic and the first drive it did feel really really good yes I do have warning lights for bulbs for tire pressure and the check engine warning in my face which I did run the codes before I agreed to buy this thing and there were some stored misfire codes but they weren't active the engine is not misfiring but one for the thermostat not getting hot enough the engine not getting hot enough quick enough so it may need a thermostat I don't know if that's a take the nose off job but the big issue is with the transmission first through second it's okay but then the second through third you try and shift fast and a little bit of a crunch right there I don't know if you heard it but I mean just barely a scratch and then the clutch is feeling a little bit near the end of its life now the 340 horsepower isn't a lot by today's standard but since it delivers it look at that amazing noise other than the transmission scratch it is so dang fun except when red Volvo's getting your way out of the wave although fourth gear scratches as well so I don't know if I'm going to get lucky with a fluid change and a little friction modifier additive to it I know I need to put a clutch in no matter what and you know you're taking the transmission out to do that but a new transmission or a used one from a junkyard is a couple of grand so maybe I'll get lucky but there are some other things to deal with this seat is well loose it has some play to it unfortunately we do have the check engine light as well but everything else is working cold air conditioning the heated seats all the infotainment which you do have all the modern conveniences you would want in a new car so you're giving up well basically nothing other than a little bit of money in retrospect compared to how much this costs new or how much a new S5 would cost and you get a proper European V8 manual transmission GT Driving Experience it's awesome I say that as we drive the mechanics to get it looked over so it may not be awesome when we look over this thing usually with older European cars the purchase price is just the down payment and then the maintenance and the repairs basically feel like a car payments but still cheaper to own than depreciation on a new car maybe this one's one of the Exceptions there are some exceptions maybe this will be one of them we'll see fingers crossed it's ninja and the reason why I have this prize thank you so much yeah so I only have this car because Euro Asian Bob passed on it he's a car dealer with very high standards and you didn't want this one because I I really wanted it I mean it's a misfires it's not misfiring right now it's not we'll just clear them and see um but obviously the thermostat needs to be done okay so what do you think of my timing chain nope I'm fine yep okay all right well that's a relief so I'm at least dealing with a clutch and a fluid change on the transmission yeah the clutch is going to be expensive because the transmission has to come out but yes I'm thinking before we do that we change the fluid and add whatever additive to make it try and come back to where I mean it's just barely scratching when you go to Third and then when you go to Fourth yes we can try it maybe yep hopefully maybe but let's see if there's anything else perfect foreign oh I do don't that's uh it's coming through the holes punched through the drip pan over the years yep so let's remove that and see okay oh some of it is from your from your transmission really yeah so maybe you're just low on fluid so look at the gear shift right there oh yeah I see that yep okay uh you got a broken bushing that's really broken yes it doesn't feel like it though it still feels really tight it's the same on this side wonderful yeah oh okay it's not supposed to do that I imagine huh no okay yeah so let's take this cover off all right all right that's a lot of oil and it's it's higher than the pan so yuck we are going to look between the front main seal and the upper timing covers have a look from the top yes okay yes yes doesn't matter what it is the nose would have to come off unfortunately perfect but those are not bad so they come they come out pretty easy all right got good brakes good tires you need rear brakes too ah yeah rollers and pads so suspension brakes engines leaking transmission's leaking clutch clutch and then we need to adjust the tips because they're sticking out they're pushed back make it looks a little bit nicer crooked tips yes on them Meister shaft exhaust that doesn't sound like the name of the exhaust it sounds like a name you would name your your anyway let's put it down very very tight on this thing huh yeah and I was hoping that will not be it but I think it is timing chain cover no what is it from previous experiences it is
