The Rumored Launch of the iPhone SE: What We Know So Far
Before we get started, be sure to subscribe and hit the bell to get notifications whenever we share a video. The iPhone SE or iPhone 9 or whatever Apple decides to call its low-cost iPhone is rumored to be so close to launching that some have said it could be announced as soon as today, April 3rd. While there's technically still time to drop this new iPhone today, I think the ship has sailed for a release, but I do think it's happening very, very soon.
The new iPhone is expected to bear the name iPhone SE, just like it was when it was introduced back in 2016. However, it should still hold the same rumored design as an iPhone 8. In fact, we've seen a couple of leaks from Apple itself for accessories like this Belkin invisi glass screen protector that's listed for the iPhone 8, iPhone 7, and the iPhone S II. The 20/20 iPhone SE is expected to come in white, black, and product red color options, and Apple will offer 64, 128, or 256 gigs of storage capacities.
Another leak from Apple itself happened in a support video listed on the Company's own YouTube page about how to erase your current iPhone. The video has been since removed, but around the minute and 45-second mark, you'll see under enable offline finding it reads that offline finding will be enabled for this device and air tags to be found when not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular. This tells me that the launch of these new tile-like trackers from Apple are also on their way.
Air tags are small tracking tiles with Bluetooth connectivity that could be used to find lost items. Now, there are already several similar products on the market, obviously like Tile, but Apple's version will be more deeply integrated with Apple's devices and might look like these little round white tags with an Apple logo on them.
One last major story from Apple this week is the company's acquisition into popular weather app/ API dark sky. Dark sky is one of the most popular weather apps on the App Store, known for its accuracy and storm warnings. There will be no changes to the dark sky for iOS app at this moment in time, and it will continue to be available for purchase in the App Store. Apple does not appear to be making the app free at this moment, and it continues to be priced at three dollars and 99 cents in the future.
Apple could be planning to build dark sky into its own weather app, which relies on data from the Weather Channel at this current moment in time. This is where the real good part of the acquisition lies, at least for me if you're an iOS user who uses dark sky for Android or Windows OS sadly, the app will be discontinued on July 1st, 2020, and the API will continue to work for third-party applications that use dark skies API until the end of 2021. However, after that, a lot of weather apps dependent on that API will have to find another solution.
I love and use dark sky constantly; it's incredible, and I'm happy to see it hopefully get implemented into Apple's weather app soon but sad that it won't be available anymore on Android if you use Android devices now.
Before we end this video, here are a couple of quick tech headlines throughout the week. It seems every week news on the launch Ford upcoming 20/20 I phones have different forecasts due to the virus and the stress that it's causing on supply chains but this week we are seeing reports from Foxconn that states there's still an opportunity for 5G iPhones to launch on time at this point, I'm sure it's going to keep changing week by week so just take it with a grain of salt.
Apple has informed its retail stores in the US that it will continue to remain closed until early May and Apple employees will continue to work from home until then. Finally, it looks like YouTube will be launching a new feature called shorts and efforts to compete with Tick-Tock. YouTube's shorts will exist within the current YouTube mobile app, and you'll see YouTube offering a feed of brief videos posted by YouTube users that will be able to take advantage of the catalog of licensed music that YouTube has.
That wraps up this week's news but I would love to know your thoughts on these stories or any other stories that we might have missed in the comments section down below. This has been Dan with MacRumors, thanks so much for watching and I hope to see you around in the next video.
