How To Lube A Garage Door

**Silencing Garage Door Squeaks: A Step-by-Step Guide**

As we open and close our garage doors, it's common to hear an annoying squeak that can be frustrating and disturbing. However, with a few simple steps, you can silence these squeaks and prolong the life of your rollers and pivot points. In this article, we'll walk you through the process of lubricating your garage door, using a white lithium grease as our chosen lubricant.

**Preparation is Key**

Before starting, make sure to put on some safety glasses and have a rag nearby to clean up any overspray that may occur. We recommend wearing gloves to protect your hands from any potential mess. Now, let's get started with the process of silencing those squeaks!

**Lubricating Pivot Points**

The first step is to identify the pivot points on your garage door where the squeaks are occurring. These points include the rollers on the outside of the hinges, as well as the mean spring (if your door has one) and the top of the guide rail of the opener. Use a straw to get into these joints and spray some white lithium grease into each pivot point. You don't need a lot, just enough to visibly see some lubricant coming out from under the roller.

**Working with the Roller Bearings**

Some garage doors have actual bearings in their rollers, while others are simply nylon rollers jammed on the end of the cap. Either way, applying white lithium grease will help to reduce friction and silence the squeak. If you're lucky enough to have real bearings, make sure to spray some lubricant into those as well.

**Working with the Pivot Points (continued)**

Now that we've addressed the pivot points, it's time to tackle the rest of the door. Spray more white lithium grease into each of the pivot points, making sure to get a little bit on each one. You want to be "spray happy" and make sure every point is well-lubricated.

**Working with Springs**

Your garage door may have one or two springs, both of which need some lubrication as well. Apply white lithium grease to the top edge of these springs, making sure to get it on all parts of the spring. This will help reduce friction and prevent any resistance when opening and closing the door.

**Working with the Top Edge**

The top edge of your garage door's bar is another critical area where pressure is concentrated. If you have a nylon guide in this area, apply some white lithium grease to it as well. However, be careful not to wipe off any lubricant that may drip onto other parts of the opener. You want the top edge to stay well-lubricated and working smoothly.

**A Few Final Tips**

Before finishing up, take a moment to inspect your garage door's rollers and pivot points for any signs of wear or damage. If you find any issues, it's best to address them before proceeding with lubrication. Additionally, be sure to clean up any spills or drips immediately to prevent rust or corrosion from forming.

By following these steps, you should be able to silence your garage door squeaks and prolong the life of your rollers and pivot points. Remember to use white lithium grease as your chosen lubricant and take your time when applying it to each point. With a little bit of effort, you'll be enjoying a smooth and quiet garage door experience in no time!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi I'm Shannon from host Nkrumah's comm your grad store making a lot of noise or squeaking well maybe all you need to do is add a little bit of white lithium grease to all the pivot points to stop that squeaking in May once you do this it may take a few times opening closing the door to kind of work it in there to get rid of your squeaks but this should do a lot of the lot of the work pretty easily so you want to use a white lithium grease try to avoid a product like let's see and I'm not bashing them or anything but you want to kind of avoid wd-40 they're their normal spray anyways just because wd-40 is more of a moisture inhibitor than it is actually a grease of any kind so this this here will actually leave some usable grease in the pivot points that should last for a while so we want to grease the pivot points like like I said like any any mid hinges you have rollers on the outside and as you can see you want to wear some safety glasses just because you might get some residual spray back from the door and I've got a rag with me as well to clean up any overspray that I get so it's not running or dripping anywhere so we're gonna do those pivot points we're gonna actually do the mean spring if you have a spring like that on your door and as well as the top of the guide rail of the graduate or opener okay so you just want to use your straw basically get into these joints on here and I out here you want to get reading out some of you might have really good actual bearings that you can see on your rollers on this particular door and a lot of residential doors is just basically a nylon roller jammed on the end of this cap I don't know if there's really even a bearing in there but anyways you want to spray some Lube in there and here and in these pivot points okay so just give a little you don't need a ton of it just get a little bit in there so that you can visibly see some reading out here under the roller and there's a pivot point here to the point here and in where the shaft goes I want to get some in there and this is what I'm saying about getting a little bit spray happy there you get a little bit of spray back so I'm gonna go around hit all the points and then we'll get a ladder and work up top okay so once you've got all the pivot points on the door you're gonna have one more right up here there's a pin and there's another pin right here these ones aren't real critical but while you're doing it you might as well give them a shot and then you've got your you might have one or maybe even two Springs up there so you want to give it a bit of a coat along the top edge and once you've worked the door a few times it'll work itself in as the spring moves around but if you put it on the top at least it has a chance to work through it if you put it down here chances are you're just going to get some dripping coming off the bottom sole I think I got as much on me as I did on the spring wait that off the back wall I didn't put a ton on there well maybe get a picture of that afterwards and insert it just so you can kind of see what I go on there but it'll just work its way in there a little bit once you've worked the door like I said now the other spot that is worth doing now most openers the top edge of this bar it might be a pipe in this case it's a rectangular bar is where most of the pressure is you might get some resistance a little bit on the sides and the bottom but most of it's all going to be on the top so a little bit of lube on the top where the guide puts the pressure on it it's gonna be the best most openers do have a nylon guide in there but it still doesn't hurt have a little bit of Lube on the top of the rail off any dripped over the side there or not just weight them on there I'm not wiping the lube off the top we want that to stay on there and that'll work in with the opener operating a couple of times so that's that's just a really quick way of getting some of the squeaks and groans out of your garage door and forgot prolonging the life of your rollers and and all the pivot points as well so so hopefully you liked that video click the little thumbs up button
