Huawei Mate 40 Pro Review - Staying Competitive

**Huawei Mate 40 Pro Review**

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro packs a 4,400 milliamp hour battery that lasted me about a day and a half with average use. It also ships with a 66 watt charger out of the box, which is a pretty generous inclusion and possibly the fastest that comes bundled with a smartphone today. In my tests, I was able to get 33% in 10 minutes, 81% in 30 seconds, and a full charge from zero took 55 minutes. The phone also supports Huawei's optional 50 watt wireless charger, which got me close to similar results of 26% in 10 minutes, 72% in 30 seconds, and a full charge in just over an hour.

As a point of comparison, Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with a 4,500 milliamp hour battery and ships with a 25 watt charger, which gets you to 58% in 30 minutes and 100% in 70 minutes. The Note 20 Ultra only charges up to 15 watts wirelessly, whereas the Mate 40 Pro supports faster wireless charging at 22%. Samsung's wireless charger can get you to 22% in 30 minutes and 100% in double the time it takes to wirelessly charge the Mate 40 Pro.

The Mate 40 Pro runs EMUI 11 based on Android 10. As EMUI 11 just rolled out, this is no surprise given its current relationship with Google. One of my favorite software features that's unique to the Mate 40 Pro is called "Eyes On Display", an improvement to the Always-On Display feature on some of its phones. This feature dims the screen all the way when you're not looking at it, but doesn't dim as much when you are. Another cool feature is Smart Gestures, which includes new gestures like waving left and right to flip through photos in your gallery, and the Grab gesture to take a screenshot.

The Huawei Mate 40 Pro will retail for €1,199, while its sibling models, the Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro Plus, will retail for €8.99 and €13.99 euros respectively. As much as I hate the fact that we're in this situation where one of the world's best smartphone manufacturers can't compete on equal footing with the rest of the world's best, Huawei is doing its utmost to survive this political crisis by investing millions of dollars into its own app ecosystem, its own operating system called Harmony OS, and its own set of services like Petal Search and upcoming Petal Maps.

However, one can't overlook the lack of Google Play Services and how that impacts the experience for everyday Android users. There's also the fact that because of US restrictions, Huawei's chip-making arm might not be able to source all the parts it needs to make the Kirin processor, leading some to fear that Kirin 9000 might be its last hurrah. Despite these challenges, I think the Mate 40 Pro is a solidly built and well-designed smartphone that balances performance features and battery efficiency.

I'm a big fan of vegan leather options and believe this is the way to go. The camera performance on the Mate 40 Pro is still excellent, although competition has finally caught up. I also think it's an excellent flagship that balances performance features and battery efficiency. Fast wired and wireless charging features are top-notch, and at a time where more and more accessories are being left out of the box, it's refreshing to get a 66 watt charger bundled.

In terms of price tiers starting at €8.99 euros, I think this is competitive versus the likes of Samsung and Apple. In an Android world, Huawei is in a different league when it comes to building an ecosystem of devices, apps, and services that work together. My stake in all of this is competition because competition means more choice and better technology for us all.

**Conclusion**

In conclusion, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro is a solidly built well-designed smartphone that balances performance features and battery efficiency. Its cameras are still excellent, although competition has finally caught up. The fast wired and wireless charging features are top-notch, and at a time where more and more accessories are being left out of the box, it's refreshing to get a 66 watt charger bundled. With its competitive price tiers starting at €8.99 euros, I think this is an excellent flagship that offers great value for money.

However, as much as I hate the fact that we're in this situation where one of the world's best smartphone manufacturers can't compete on equal footing with the rest of the world's best, Huawei is doing its utmost to survive this political crisis by investing millions of dollars into its own app ecosystem and services. Despite these challenges, I think the Mate 40 Pro is a great phone that offers excellent performance features and battery efficiency.

In the end, it's up to you to decide whether or not the Mate 40 Pro is your gadget match. With its competitive price tiers starting at €8.99 euros, I think this is an excellent option for anyone looking for a high-end smartphone with great performance features and battery efficiency.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enif there's one smartphone that huawei's best known for it's the photography centric p series really the phone that ushered in huawei's popularity and its one-time dominance of the smartphone space but every second half of the year the company is known to release a second smartphone the mate series an update that brings along with it industry leading features like in 2016 when super fast charging started to become a trend or in 2017 when we first heard about ai on mobile and 2018 the first time reverse wireless charging was seen on a phone but what new features does it bring and is it still an android smartphone to beat hi i'm michael josh you're watching gadget match this is our huawei mate 40 pro review let's start with an unboxing the mate 40 pro comes in this nondescript black box but notice the embossed circle that will be a theme of this video i know you want to see the phone so let's lift up on this lid first up is the mate 40 pro looks like we have one with a silvery finish and there's that big circle again does it remind you of anything inside here is an insert with a sim ejector pin tucked away up top and inside that a clear jelly case look at that big circular camera cutout deeper inside the box there's a 66 watt supercharged charging brick a usbc to a cable with a touch of orange instead of the usual purple finally a pair of usbc headphones so this is it the mate 40 pro its design is pretty attention grabbing mainly because of this large circular camera bump reminiscent of a click wheel ipod huawei says it's an evolution of the halo ring found on last year's mate 30. this time around it's called the space ring it's supposedly inspired by the first ever photo of a black hole reflecting huawei's spirit of exploration i personally prefer last year's design this one is kind of a bit in your face although i guess that's because of the stark contrast of the black circle against this mystic silver finish the ceramic all black model looks better in my opinion and in china huawei is also offering vegan leather options available in yellow and green and finally there's ceramic white huawei is proud of this colorway though it's very similar to the breathing crystal p30 pro so much so that it changes colors depending on where the light hits sometimes it's pink and yellow sometimes blue and purple the finish though is matte instead of glossy it's 6.76 inch oled display is bigger than the mate 30 pro and as a result the phone is bigger too it's a much bigger phone than i had expected not quite as big as the note 20 ultra but with a bit more heft to it unique to this phone is a waterfall display that curves outward more than most phones making it look like it has no borders on either side instead of a notch it's got a pill-shaped hole for a selfie camera and a 3d sensor used for more secure face unlock there's also an under display fingerprint scanner giving you two options to unlock your device but do take note that the 3d face unlock is not a safe for example it will work with a mask on compared to the mate 30 pro it's got the same red power button on its right hand side and this year huawei brought back the volume rocker which it took away last year in favor of touch-based virtual keys that let you tap on either side of the phone to bring up the volume slider this feature is still present on the mate 40 pro we've seen it before but rarely from other phones like the me 10 pro from earlier this year and personally i think this is a great idea there are speaker grills on both the top and bottom of the mate 40 pro having the audio come out from both sides while watching a movie or playing a game makes the audio feel more immersive versus just a bottom firing one i can confirm that these are some of the loudest speakers on a smartphone that we've tested this year but not quite as loud as the lg v60 still the audio champ from this year huawei claims that these speakers have stronger base but i personally didn't feel that much of a punch the mate 40 pro is the first huawei smartphone and possibly the last to be powered by their new kirin 9000 processor it's a 5 nanometer chip with an integrated 5g modem huawei says it has 15.3 billion transistors on it 30 more than the other 5 nanometer chip of course with any new chip there are bold statements about how much more powerful the cpu gpu npu and isp are and how much more battery efficient too so it's no surprise that games run smoothly the phones got a 90 hertz display with a close to 4k panel huawei says this was intentional to deliver the best balance between performance and battery life you can choose to have it dynamically switch between the two or go all out with ultra having it on the entire time the mate 40 pro has a triple camera setup headlined by a 50 megapixel wide camera with a large one over 1.28 inch image sensor the largest that's currently available in smartphones and the same one that's on the p40 pro plus there's also a 20 megapixel ultra wide cine camera and a 12 megapixel telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom in keeping with its symmetric design there's one more circle over here that's the laser autofocus module i know none of this means anything unless you can see sample photos and good news we've got a lot of them for you first from its main wide-angle camera no surprises here sunny day shots look great no overblown highlights nice blue skies lots of detail even the clouds are not mushy of course i love some crema boca and between its large sensor and fast f 1.9 lens you don't need portrait mode for shots like this notice how sharp the salt rim on my michelada but how blurry some of the ice cubes already are love it speaking of portrait mode here are two samples one shot during the day and one at night i don't know about you but i think they look great as can be expected the 1x lens is pretty good in low light whether it be this food shot of my quesadilla this subway photo and of these neon lights none of them required night mode with a 100 degree field of view huawei's ultra wide angle lens isn't as wide as its competitors take a look at this comparison versus the iphone 11 pro max that said it is a very good camera one that you can actually use at night of course during the day it's great too and if you compare these almost similar photos versus the main lens you'll find that they're tuned very similarly to gauge low light performance take a look at this colorful wall in between two buildings the shot on the left was taken during the day the shot on the right was taken at night without night mode that said night mode still works with the ultra wide angle lens i used it in this shot of the brooklyn academy of music building here's the same photo with night mode turned off but tbh it didn't really need night mode which one do you like better sound off in the comments section below finally let's take a look at that periscope telephoto camera if you ask me i'm pretty glad that huawei has stepped on the brakes in terms of pushing towards that 100x zoom on a smartphone its 5x optical telephoto lens is sufficient even indoors during the day 10x hybrid zoom is pretty good also and finally let's zoom in all the way to 50x as you can see in these 1x 10x and 50x photos of the one hanson building in downtown brooklyn you'll find that 10x is still very good while 50x is passable but not something you'd post unless the subject that you're taking a photo of was rare we're not done yet i also want to know how the mate 40 pro's camera compares versus the new iphone 12 pro the samsung galaxy note 20 ultra and the pixel 5. for this comparison we'll focus mainly on low light photography first 1x night mode dimly lit room some accent lights and different colors balloons not fully stationary the iphone 12 pros photo is bright but there's no shadow detail on my face it's the opposite on the note 20 ultra the mate 40 pro struggles a bit here the pixel 5 has the best balance and is kinder on my face now let's zoom out ultra wide angle lens all phones now support night mode with this camera the iphone 12 pro is the worst shot here the note 20 ultras is contrasty as usual but well balanced the mate 40 pro is bright but not very ultra wide compared to the others the pixel 5's photo is the best one again finally an extreme low light test hardly any available light here each phone was pretty still so i'm choosing to expose for as much as 25 seconds the pixel 5 shows a short exposure and has the worst photo in this set the mate 40 pro did a reasonable job but the photo is a bit on the yellower side and finally it's neck and neck between the note 20 ultra and the iphone 12 pro which one is better is probably a toss up depending on which mood you like better i kind of like the iphones here two years ago the mate 20 blew its competitors out of the water with its ability to basically see in the dark it's interesting how competition has since caught up these last few days in new york have been rainy and gloomy so i haven't really been able to shoot a lot of video huawei says its ultra wide cine camera with its 3x2 ratio and xd fusion hdr technology that processes backlit video in real time is a big improvement i guess i'll just have to post samples on social media so make sure to follow me there finally the mate 40 pro has a 13 megapixel ultra wide angle selfie camera with anti-distortion technology and intelligent fov finder which will detect if multiple people are in a shot and will adjust framing accordingly the other cutout by the way is not a second selfie camera but is used for 3d face unlock whether they're true to life or not i love how i look on selfies taken on huawei phones and the mate 40 pro is no exception by the way when you first set up portrait mode you'll be given the option to turn beauty mode on or off by default here are more selfie sample shots the huawei mate 40 pro packs a 4 400 milliamp hour battery that in my few days reviewing the phone lasted me about a day and a half with average use it also ships with a 66 watt charger out of the box a pretty generous inclusion and possibly the fastest that comes bundled with a smartphone today in my tests i got to 33 in 10 minutes 81 and 30 a full charge from zero took 55 minutes the phone also supports huawei's optional 50 watt wireless charger using this accessory i got close to similar results 26 in 10 minutes 72 in 30 and a full charge in just a minute shy of an hour as a point of comparison samsung's galaxy note 20 ultra comes with a 4 500 milliamp hour battery and ships with a 25 watt charger which gets you to 58 in 30 minutes and 100 in 70. the note 20 ultra only charges up to 15 watts wirelessly samsung's wireless charger you can get to 22 in 30 minutes and 100 in double the time it takes to wirelessly charge the mate 40 pro the mate 40 pro runs emui 11 based on android 10. as emui 11 just rolled out and given its current relationship with google this comes as no surprise one of my favorite software features that's unique to the mate 40 pro is called eyes on display an improvement to the always-on display feature on some of its phones you know when phone displays don't dim all the way but show you the time or date or a cool graphic to save on battery life is on display will dim the screen all the way you don't even need to move your head just move your eyes and look at your phone it's pretty cool i've gotta admit other cool features include smart gestures new to the mate 40 series is being able to wave left and right to flip through photos in your gallery but my favorite is the grab gesture to take a screenshot the huawei mate 40 pro will retail for 1199 euros huawei also announced the mate 40 and mate 40 pro plus which retail for 8.99 and 13.99 euros respectively so is the mate 40 pro your gadget match let me start by saying that i really hate the fact that we're in this situation where one of the world's best smartphone manufacturers cannot compete on equal footing with the rest of the world's best huawei is doing its utmost to survive this political crisis investing millions of dollars into its own app ecosystem its own operating system called harmony os and its own set of services like pedal search and the upcoming pedal maps but as it stands one can't overlook the lack of google play services and how that impacts the experience for everyday android users and then there's the fact that because of us restrictions huawei's chip making arm might not be able to source all the parts that it needs to make the kirin processor some fear kirin 9000 might be its last hurrah there's an uphill climb ahead and hopefully there's light at the end of the tunnel all of these challenges aside in a world where the lack of gms wasn't an issue this is what i would have said about the huawei mate 40 pro i think it's a solidly built well-designed smartphone i'm a big fan of vegan leather options and i believe this is the way to go i think it's an excellent flagship that balances performance features and battery efficiency i think that its cameras are still excellent but competition has finally caught up i think that its fast wired and wireless charging features are top-notch and that at a time where more and more accessories are being left out of the box it's refreshing to get a 66 watt charger bundled and i think that its current price tiers starting at 8.99 euros are competitive versus the likes of samsung and apple so in a perfect world the huawei mate 40 pro would be up there among the best phones that i can wholeheartedly recommend here's to hoping political challenges resolve themselves soon i'm a fan of huawei phones no more than i'm a fan of samsung galaxies and apple iphones i think in an android world huawei is in a different league in terms of building an ecosystem of devices apps and services that work together but my stake in all of this is competition because competition means more choice and better technology for us all and that was our huawei mate 40 pro review if you'd like to see more content
