The Agony of Giving Away Cars for Free: A Story of Two BMWs and a Lesson Learned
It's happened again, I'm starting to feel like I've been screwed twice. The first time was when I gave away my car for free to someone I considered a friend. I felt good about it, thinking that I was doing the right thing by giving him a vehicle in need. However, he ended up selling it for $5,000, which left me feeling like I'd been taken advantage of.
I spoke to the guy who bought the car from my friend and asked him why he sold it so quickly. He told me that his truck had blown out, and if I had sold it to him sooner, he would have gotten a better price for it. He also mentioned that he had held onto the car for three weeks, which was longer than necessary. It's clear that my friend didn't need the car as much as he thought he did, and he took advantage of my generosity.
The second time this happened was with another BMW I had listed on Craigslist. This one bothers me a bit more because it involved an auction-style sale through eBay. The bidding went up, but in the end, no one was willing to take on the car at any price. It's frustrating when you put yourself out there and nobody is interested.
I received messages from multiple people asking about the car's value, including one guy who claimed he needed a car for a friend living in Anglewood. He offered me $2,250 or $2,500 for it, which I thought was a fair price considering the car's worth. However, I didn't want to pry into his financial situation, so I decided to give him a good deal and sold it to him for $1,000 cash. I told myself that it was some good karma, but in hindsight, it feels like I've been taken advantage of once again.
The car had some minor issues when the guy took possession of it, which required a few hundred dollars' worth of repairs. A month later, the car was listed for sale on Craigslist at $4,000, which is significantly lower than its original price. It's disheartening to think that someone who didn't need the car as much as they claimed would take advantage of my generosity and sell it for a fraction of what I paid.
This experience has taught me a valuable lesson about being cautious when giving away cars or items of value to people you trust. While it may feel good to help others, it's essential to set boundaries and ensure that you're not being taken advantage of in the process. From now on, I'm no longer going to sell my cars below market price just to hook someone up. It's time for me to be more realistic about what I can afford to give away for free.
As I look back on these experiences, I realize that it's not always easy to do the right thing when it comes to giving away things of value. Sometimes, people will take advantage of your kindness, and it's essential to recognize those situations before they happen again. While this experience has been frustrating, it has also taught me a valuable lesson about being more careful with my generosity in the future.

don't really like this car I'm going to turn around and sell it but to me it feels a little bit the first one they gave me the excuse he needed the money the second guy I feel like he was just looking to make a quick whatever 1,500 2,000 bucks flipping it if you can get three grand for it uh it's doubles his money so be it thank you for watching uh I am no longer going to sell my cars below Market
