**Microsoft's Continuum Feature: Bringing Windows Phones Back to Life**
The Microsoft Continuum feature is a game-changer for Windows phones, allowing users to transform their devices into a desktop-like experience. With the Lumia 950, we can see firsthand how this feature works and its potential applications.
One of the most impressive features of the Continuum feature is its ability to make popular apps available on a Windows phone. For example, Facebook is not compatible with the Continuum feature, but Microsoft is working on making more and more apps available. One of the coolest apps that I think really look cool are the office suite of apps. One of the most used applications by people are the office applications, so let's quickly check those out now.
I've loaded up Word and you can see you get all these templates over here and it's like a Word document on a Windows PC but it's running all from this cable on this phone. The 950 XL device does start to get warm after some time of usage, but it's still not bad and you can continue using it without any issues. What you're looking at is essentially more or less a full-fledged version of Word running from your phone on a display. You can also load up Excel and I'm going to do that just about now.
You can basically do your charting and spreadsheeting on your phone using a big display, so essentially what you're doing is you're leaving the need to carry a laptop at home or a desktop and you're basically just putting a display and this dock and just connecting everything on your phone. It stays on your phone at all times. What you're looking at is a full-fledged version of Excel running from the office suite of applications available on a Windows device, which is absolutely fantastic.
All office applications are available on the Windows device, so if you have word spreadsheets using Excel or presentations using PowerPoint, all of those are available. You're also looking at a direct feed from the camera, which is streaming 4K content and 60fps directly to your screen. If you angle it just right, you can get some trippy stuff going on your screen.
One of the best implementations I've seen from the camera on a screen so far, in this case, if you want to put your phone as a display or if you want to connect a cable from another room, you can even use this as a monitoring display. This is a cool feature that would be really expensive way to put your phone to use, but it's an option if you want to use it like that.
Now, the price of the Lumia 950 with the kind of specifications it has seems to be a little high at Rs 50,000 and add another Rs 10,000 for the display dock, making it Rs 60,000. The Lumia 950 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, which is essentially the same chipset as now available on devices that are under Rs 20,000 makes it really expensive according to me.
However, the fact that Microsoft has added liquid cooling onto this device and the fact that you can do things like the Continuum feature make you want to not buy or carry a desktop or a laptop and this can essentially become your go-to device if all you're doing is looking at the browser using basic applications like Facebook Etc and then doing office app-related work, including Word, Excel Etc.
Microsoft is really putting in an attempt to sort of bring back love for Windows phones which was sort of lost with all the rage with iOS and Android happening over the past couple of years. Microsoft is now trying to bring people to sort of like Windows phones this is completely aimed at a premium segment of the market.
**Conclusion**
The Lumia 950 with the Continuum feature is a unique device that can transform your phone into a desktop-like experience. With its impressive features, including the ability to run office applications and stream 4K content directly from the camera, it's clear why this device has so much potential. However, the price may be a bit high for some users, but with the right applications and use case, this can become your go-to device.
**Additional Features**
One of the best implementations I've seen is the ability to directly feed from the Bing Maps camera, which allows you to access street view right on your phone. This feature is not only useful but also shows how Microsoft is working to improve the user experience on Windows phones.
As we wait for more applications to become compatible with the Continuum feature, it's clear that this technology has a lot of potential. We hope that app developers will start to notice the Windows platform and create more applications to take advantage of this feature.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthe new Lumia phones may be reason enough to finally switch over to Windows and with its Continuum features and this new display dock we might be able to leave our laptops at home my name is B npal and we're checking out the new Lumia 950 XL by Microsoft the new Lumia 950 XL has been launched in India for 49,4 00 and this new dock is roughly 10,000 rupees on its price but it adds some of the coolest features that you would have seen on a smartphone and Microsoft may have taken the lead on this allowing you to finally leave your laptop at home but we'll check that out in just a minute inside the box of the Lumia 950 XL the first thing you'll find is the 950 XL itself it's very Lumia like styling from the Nokia day so you'll see polycarbonate and glass uh you also have some documentation in there the standard set of course this is a dual SIM phone you have a USB to USB type-c cable because the phone uses a USB type-c and you also have a USB type-c wall charger again a standard Nokia style back in the day Microsoft now uses the same design for the wall plug now this is the 950 XL it's a pretty fancy looking handset it feels really good in the hand U it's also pretty big and if you talk about the specifications we have a 5.7 in Quad HD AMOLED display that means that this is a 2560 x440 pixel display which gives it a total pixel density of 518 pixels per inch running everything is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octacore chipset now this chipset heats up a lot but Microsoft has included liquid cooling just like they did on the Surface tablet inside the new 950 XL which makes it pretty interesting you also get 3 GB of RAM 32 GB of storage and expandability supported up to 200 GB via micro SD card now over at the front you have a 5 megap wideangle camera and over at the back you have a 20 megap pure view camera which also has Zas Optics and Optical limit stabilization the rear camera also shoots 4K video interestingly enough the battery on the new Lumia 950 XL is a removable battery uh like I said typical back in the day Nokia stuff happening here so removable battery makes a lot of people happy and especially in this price bracket it's one of the few devices left with removable batteries you can see you have two s slots and then the back cover supports wireless charging so if you pop on that cover it's an inductive charging supporting back cover now the device runs Windows 10 and it's possibly the most anticipated version of Windows for smartphones as well as for uh well laptops and desktop PCS uh but uh the fact that it supports Windows 10 and the fact that it comes with Windows 10 it also adds a bunch of usability including the Continuum feature uh which makes it really unique and really cool uh to own this device because you can now finally possibly leave your laptop at home and use your smartphone for mostly everything I'm going to be checking out the dock in just a minute let's quickly take a look at the interface on the new Lumia 950 XL so this is the new home screen of the 950 XL now we've been looking at this sort of design from uh well the Inception of uh the new style Windows phone for touch devices which you can see uh you can pull down the notification panel from the top you have your quick toggles now on the top as well uh you can expand the quick toggles to look at some of the other toggles that you can have on the top over here uh which is interesting very Android like um this feature was recently added it was available uh but it sort of is refined and more fluid on Windows 10 uh looks nicer as well they've cleaned up the UI quite a lot and um it's become really fast really responsive really clean in terms of the way it's been designed now the usability of Windows Remains the Same you can change the size of the tiles according to your requirement you can sort of customize the home screen layout you can of course change the color of the home screen as well from Blue to whatever you would like a bunch of options are available and then uh you also have uh Cortana now readily available in India people have been using this uh there was there have been workarounds changing your local the US has been one of them but you have now cotana and uh it's uh and Kotana is said to be one of the best assistants as far as mobile devices are concerned out there it's a readily available throughout Windows 10 you can see some of the pre-loaded applications and tools that you have over here uh you also have a quick tips where you can get to know Windows 10 and understand what all you can do with it you also have uh one drive and all these applications pre-loaded on your home screen once you set it up uh of course you can change the size of the tiles like I said and move them around customize the way your home screen looks and sort of move things around and uh put them in a playful manner more productive manner whatever you would like to do uh you can do that and some of the apps and games that are preloaded and you can get rid of them if you don't want them so here I'm uninstalling some of the applications to show you uh that whatever is pre-installed doesn't need to be kept so you can easily get rid of them if you don't want any of the applications uh that come pre-installed you can readily and easily get rid of them now this is the all apps uh drawer you can see it's very fast very responsive and the overall feel of the device is really good if you look at the camera interface you can see that again it's it's a very uh Windows style camera nothing special going on over here you can go into your settings customize them uh now you can see that it'll shoot 4K video uh if I scroll to the bottom over here you can see It'll capture 16 megapixel uh pictures I can also switch to 20 megapix uh we are capturing 4K video at 30 frames per second and then you also have this manual mode where you can sort of switch around your uh capability if you want uh manual focus manual ISO settings manual shutter settings you can totally customize those from here before you click your picture before you capture your video which is really interesting and really cool feature and it was possibly the first things that Lumia phones came out with now you can also add lenses if you want to download and look at some of the lenses you can go to the Windows store and uh download apps which will act as lenses and apply filters and edits to your pictures uh before you can actually click them now the Windows store lacks a lot of applications and developers are not paying a lot of focus into Windows uh devices right now even apps like Instagram which are very mainstream are still running in beta on Windows devices hopefully Microsoft aims to change that with these new devices and hopefully we'll start to see a good support of applications uh for Microsoft and windows devices in the near future now you do have a full Suite of office applications on the Windows phone devices and uh that is one of the coolest features uh let me quickly set up the Continuum Dock and show you what the display dock will look like once you connect it to your monitor and uh let's take a look at that feature on this device so this is the Continuum dock you can see we have a bunch of ports there on the back three USB ports an HDMI port a USB type-c port on the back as well as a USB type-c port on the front uh basically allowing you to connect your phone and the fact that the dock is also powered by a USB type-c cable is quite interesting as well now here is where the power of the liquid cooling will will come into play uh since you're powering a second screen from your uh device you'll be able to sort of uh not only control the second screen but also sort of have two displays running now if you're not using a keyboard or a mouse uh like the fact that I'm not your phone becomes a touchpad and you can basically navigate using your phone which I quite like if you want you can use the USB ports on the back of the dock uh to connect a mouse or a keyboard if you have bluetooth enabled devices you can connect them to your phone directly and sort of use them while you're using uh your monitor or any display now you can load up uh the browser the problem with the browser is it'll mostly run uh apps or it'll mostly run pages in The Mobile mode and as much as we tried to switch uh to the uh regular mode it wouldn't do that on the main display over here so that may be a feature that windows or Microsoft is working out right now some of the apps again don't work so Facebook for example is not compatible with Continuum right now but according to Microsoft they're working on making more and more apps available one of the apps that I think really look cool are the office suite of apps and one of the most used applications by people are the office applications so let's quickly check those out now the need to carry a laptop at home or a desktop and you're basically just putting a display and this Dock and just connecting everything on your phone it stays on your phone at all times uh again what you're looking at is a full-fledged version of excel uh running from the office suite of applications available on a Windows phone device which is absolutely fantastic now all office applications are available on the Windows device so if you have a word spreadsheets using Excel or uh presentations using PowerPoint all of those are available what you're also looking at now is a direct feed from the camera so it is streaming 4K content uh at 6 60p directly wo and if you angle it just right you can get some trippy stuff going on your screen right now if you look at this it looks absolutely cool so you can have some fun with that but essentially a live feed and it's really real time uh one of the best implementations I've seen uh from the camera on a screen so if you want to put a you can if you want to put your phone as a display or uh if you want to connect a cable from another room you can even use this as a monitoring display uh which is a cool feature which would be a really expensive ignored it'll continue to get ignored further we still feel that the price braacket is a little high uh but the kind of offering that you have right now seems to be pretty good now if you have any questions or queries for this device I'm going to ask you to drop them in the comment section below or tweet us at Igan and we'll try and cover them up in the final review video that will come out in a couple of days so uh stay tuned for that and uh do check out .in catches on Facebook twiter Google+ this has been thank you guys for watching hethe new Lumia phones may be reason enough to finally
