Noisy and it Got Worse: A Troubled Porsche's Journey to Amelia Island
I've had my trusty 1999 Porsche with 245,000 miles on it for a while now. The car has been noisy and it got progressively worse over time. I replaced the original parts one by one, hoping that it would get better. However, despite my efforts, the car continued to make strange noises. I've also had some issues with the car's performance, which made me worry about its reliability.
As I was getting ready for my road trip to Amelia Island in Florida, I realized that I needed to make a few cosmetic changes to the car. I found some covers that somewhat obscured the hideous running egg headlights, but I have to admit that I'm not too crazy about them. However, I did find a ducktail rear hatch that completes the Vintage Porsche Carrera RS look, and it's definitely a unique feature of my car. I also replaced the wheels with Recreation f f wheels that fit a modern 911, which added a touch of sleekness to the car. Finally, I applied some side stripes to give the car a sporty look.
I spent around $4,000 on these mods, and while it was an expensive endeavor, I couldn't resist showing off my one-of-a-kind 911 at the upcoming event. Despite the car's troubles in the past, I'm confident that it will handle the cross-country journey without any issues. The car has already handled various road conditions, including farmland, rivers, and the ocean, with ease.
Before embarking on the long journey, I took my Porsche to Jacksonville for some minor maintenance and a wash. I also settled into my hotel room, eager for what was coming the next day. As I drove down to Jacksonville, I noticed that the car was running smoothly, which was a welcome change from its previous troubles.
The old girl made it to the ferry over to the Works Motor Reunion, where I expected to see hundreds of Porsches gathered together. To my surprise, there were indeed over 600 Porsches at the event, and mine was one of them. As I walked through the crowds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and ownership.
However, my excitement was short-lived, as I soon realized that I had lost track of my car amidst the sea of Porsches. The IMs bearing booth caught my attention, but unfortunately, it wasn't mine. I spent some time searching for my car, but everything looked similar to me, including a silver 996. I must have gotten carried away with the smooth jazz music, as I lost myself in the crowd.
Eventually, a friendly Porsche fan pointed me in the right direction, and I found my beloved Apollo 911. However, before that, I had made a bit of an embarrassing mistake by mistaking a fancy Classic Car Auction for the car show. The event was certainly the buzzkill of the party, but it didn't deter me from finding my car.
In the end, I decided to make a hasty exit before the Porsche owners ran me off with pitchforks. However, I couldn't resist leaving the event without saying goodbye to my fellow Porsche enthusiasts. As for whether Apollo 911 made it back safely after the long journey, rest assured that it did. Despite being beat from the 3,000 miles, the car could have easily left tomorrow and done it three or four more times like it was nothing.
The next step is a mystery, as I'm curious to know what's next for my trusty Porsche. If you're wondering what I should test next, please let me know in the comments.
