What's Up with the 2018 MacBook Air?
Hey guys, it's Saf here on Super Saf TV, and I'm super excited to unbox the brand new 2018 MacBook Air. This is going to be my first time reviewing a MacBook on the channel, so I hope you're all as stoked as I am. As always, a thumbs up for that will be greatly appreciated.
The box itself is very clean, just a picture of the side of the MacBook Air to give you an idea of how thin it is. It's around 15.6 millimeters thin, which is pretty sleek if I do say so myself. There's also a little pull tab here that we can use to get it out of the plastic, and let me tell you, there's been lots of shakes as I've been trying to open it up. Finally, we're ready for it! Nice, now this is pretty light, around 1.25kg, which is why it's called the Air.
Of course, when you buy a MacBook, you also get your USB type-C to USB type-C cable, which is around two meters long. You've also got your power brick, which is 30 watts, and then there's this little packet here that has gold Apple stickers. I have to say, I'm loving the fact that they're colored - usually, they're white, but these are a nice touch. As well as that, you'll find some paperwork, of course.
Now, let's get to the MacBook Air itself. It feels nice and cold when it comes out of the plastic, and I love the touch of metal when it's cold. The best part is that this laptop has been made with 100% recycled aluminum or aluminum, as you Americans like to call it. Now, I don't mind either way, honestly - just please stop beefing about it in the comments! Let's leave a poll in the cut and decide once and for all whether we should be using aluminium or aluminum.
The gold version of the MacBook Air looks quite sleek, but depending on the angle that you look at it, I don't know if it kind of has a hint of rose gold to my eyes. Maybe it's not coming across on camera, or maybe my white balance in my eyes is just not tuned correctly - we'll have to try opening this up again to see for sure. Okay, so we're going to try that again. So we're just going to try to pull open the laptop with one thumb. Kind of works, kind of.
Not perfect. I've gone ahead and set everything up, and the first thing you'll notice is the display - a 13.3 retina display this time, which means it's got a resolution of 2,516 by 1,600 pixels, or around 227 ppi pixel density. That's around 40% more colors compared to the previous generation, so that's definitely a step up. The screen is also 20% larger than last year, which should make browsing and working even easier.
Another great feature of this laptop is the fact that it's optimized for file editing in Final Cut Pro X. Apple devices are very optimized with software like this, and I'm excited to put the MacBook Air through its paces and see how well it performs. We'll be testing this out in a bit, but for now, let's talk about the specs.
The laptop comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports on the side, which is great because not only can you connect your MacBook Air to an external display, but if that external display also has power output, it will charge the laptop at the same time. You'll also be able to connect this to an external GPU, so if you're a graphics editor, you'll love this feature. Just keep in mind that once you've disconnected it from your workspace, you can take it out and about.
We've got stereo speakers here on either side of the keyboard, which are 20% louder compared to last year and will give you two times more bass for fuller sound. And if you need to connect a headset or an external audio source, there's also a 3.5mm jack on the right-hand side.
So, what do you guys think of this new MacBook Air? Definitely let me know in the comments below, and if there's any additional coverage that you'd like me to do with this laptop, please leave it in the comments as well.
