The Apple Event: A Series of Incremental Upgrades
As the Apple event came to a close, it's clear that the company has delivered another series of incremental upgrades to its lineup of products. While some may be disappointed by the lack of radical changes, I believe that this approach is exactly what we can expect from Apple.
The iPhone 13 and 13 Pro are examples of this incremental approach. The base model iPad is also a solid addition to the lineup, but it's not going to blow anyone away with its features. Battery life, which was something that many were hoping for an upgrade on, has indeed been improved, but it's not as significant as some may have liked.
One thing that I've noticed from the takeaways is that people who have had negative opinions about Apple's event are saying that Apple didn't do enough. However, I think this criticism is largely unfair. The truth is, nobody was expecting a radical change in design or features from Apple. The company has consistently iterated on its products over the years, making small improvements and additions rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.
I also want to address the issue of leaks that can often lead to disappointment at Apple events. In this case, the leaks were accurate, and people knew what to expect. This means that the disappointment wasn't due to any surprises or subpar products, but rather because nobody was expecting anything revolutionary from Apple.
The reality is that Apple has always been a company that delivers solid, incremental upgrades to its products. We can expect this to be the case moving forward, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it's a testament to Apple's commitment to quality and refinement.
People who are disappointed by these new iPhones might be sitting there with their iPhone 6s, thinking they'll wait for next year's iPhone because they're not excited about this year's model. This is exactly what happens every time Apple releases a new product lineup. It's the nature of the beast, and we should expect it.
I'm sorry to say that some people are acting like these products are the end of the world. They're losing their minds over something that they didn't see coming, or expected to be more exciting. But let's take a deep breath and remember that this is Apple. It's not going to blow our minds with radical changes. Instead, it's delivering solid, incremental upgrades that will make our lives better.
The iPad Mini was the only product that seemed like a "radical" departure from the norm, but even that has some critics saying it's not as exciting as they wanted. I disagree, though. The iPad Mini is still a great device, and its design has been improved upon.
One thing that really gets under my skin is when people expect something radical to happen at Apple events. They're just going to take whatever comes out and be disappointed because it's not what they expected. But this is Apple we're talking about. We can't always expect them to do the unexpected. Sometimes, we need to get excited about small improvements that make our lives better.
In conclusion, the Apple event was a series of incremental upgrades, but I believe that's exactly what we should be expecting from Apple. It's not about trying to reinvent the wheel or blow our minds with radical changes. It's about delivering solid products that make our lives better. And that's exactly what Apple has done here.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enoh hey what's up it's almost like there was an apple event today and you're you're here for some hot takes that's super interesting because because i just thought of some hot takes that i wanted to share with you so welcome come on in get subscribed leave a like let's let's talk about it all right so apple just held an event today i don't know if you noticed that from the everyone in the tech community that was talking about it and there were mixed reactions as is almost always the case with an apple event some of those were fair some of those i think were utterly absurd the people that were upset for things that had absolutely no reason to be upset about and so today rather than just sort of regurgitating everything that apple said we're going to talk about what's new talk about what's disappointing what we expected what panned out from leaks and what didn't as well as what is to come so sit back relax and let's get started so before we start talking about the products that were announced today i want to remind you guys that dark mode the podcast that i host with noah rubin is going to be returning this sunday that's two days after the iphone pre-order and it at the start of a very exciting season of tech it's tech timber tectober tech vember tech summer you know we got a lot of stuff to talk about and that's what we're going to be doing on the podcast every sunday at 9 00 pm eastern time 6 p.m pacific time so definitely make sure to check that out so let's talk about these products in the order that they were announced and that means we first got to talk about the base model ipad so this is a product that has been a staple of apples for a little while now and for good reason it's a really compelling value and it always presents a not super exciting but just really good package now i've already ordered one of these because it looks phenomenal basically it's visually identical to what we've had before so it's a 10.2 inch display the glass isn't laminated there's no camera bump so it's sort of like the older ipad air design the initial ipad air design which came out in 2013 but just with a larger screen and it some people were kind of disappointed that they didn't change the design we had heard some rumors that were suggesting that maybe apple would go to the previous ipad air design so thinner 10.5 inch display with a little camera bump on the back of it as well as a laminated display that didn't end up happening but internally we did get some pretty nice updates so for one we now have true tone we now have an a13 bionic chip which is a little bit of an upgrade from the a12 that we had previously and we also get center stage which is honestly a pretty big upgrade and the fact that that is coming out on the base model ipad whereas the ipad air which also came out last year currently doesn't have that to me that says that the ipad air is going to be due for an update probably this fall but one of the biggest updates to the base model ipad in terms of its significance is that it now comes with 64 gigabytes of storage as standard instead of 32 that is huge 32 gigabytes was always a little bit low another thing that i would definitely keep in mind with these it's 329 now but give it a couple of months and there will be best buy micro center walmart deals that knock 70 off of that it's going to be like 250 280 those are going to be some absolutely killer deals so if you need a cheap ipad this is going to be a really really good option all right now we got to talk about the ipad mini because honestly that was that was my favorite thing in this whole event that was it i thought this was a pretty good event some people were disappointed which we'll talk about in a little bit but the ipad mini no doubt is a really really interesting product personally i think it's a really compelling option because i use my ipad pro 11 inch away from accessories pretty frequently i use it in vertical mode sometimes when i'm filming news videos i have articles pulled up there or i have a script pulled up there i use it all the time i even use my ipad pro 11 inch more than i use the 12.9 inch because this is more of a laptop and it's not really thinner or lighter than a laptop or more capable than a laptop so it's kind of weird so the 11 inch ipad pro i think is a bit more of its own niche and then this ipad mini is is even more of a niche but it's a niche that i'm really interested in exploring i'm not quite sure yet what the sort of ipad mini meta will be like the use case that makes it really cool but i'm really excited to try it out so basically it's a shrunken down ipad air right it has the same touch id and the lock button it has the same sort of sized bezels the same colorful back with a single camera no lidar like on the pro models and it's using an a15 chip the same as the iphones all really good stuff it also has center stage which is yet another thing this is going to be a great facetime machine because it's so small and portable but it has that center stage that ultra wide front-facing camera that's really cool another little tidbit that you might not have noticed because apple didn't really talk about it is that the volume buttons are on the top of the device rather than on the side sort of around the corner from the lock button so why did they do that you might be saying well the device was too short for it to have an apple pencil with volume buttons above it so they had to put the volume buttons on top that's what i think happened i'm really excited to get my hands on that i ordered that immediately um and it will be coming on the 24th all right so the apple watch series seven this one was a little bit controversial because well we had sort of been told by a lot of sources john prosser mark german ming chi kuo everyone was saying redesigned apple watch and then didn't happen and and it wasn't just that there wasn't a redesign but it doesn't even have a new chip it seems apple didn't say anything about the chip so i assume it's the same as the series six basically the differences come down to a larger display it it's more durable apparently it doesn't crack as easily and it charges a little bit faster that's kind of that's kind of it in terms of major features and a lot of people are a little bit disappointed by that i can kind of see why you know we were told that there was going to be a pretty big update this year but it seems like basically just the screen that's like the biggest thing now i'm on the fence i've got a series 5 apple watch i was going to probably get this new one if there was a redesign larger screen that sort of thing but now that that didn't happen it seems kind of minor and i don't know that i use an apple watch enough to justify that purchase now as of right now we don't actually know when this new apple watch is coming out it just says available later this fall in fact the apple watch series 6 is still for sale so i don't necessarily think that this is coming super duper soon additionally the apple watch se is still for sale at the same price of 279 and they're even still selling the series 3 for 200 why but anyway this was probably the most disappointing thing from this event and and i'll fully admit that the only reason we're disappointed is because leaks and news kind of hyped it up a little bit i don't think i really talked too much about the series 7 come to think of it because apple watch stuff isn't really my forte but i can see why people were disappointed all right so the main event of the show the iphones this took up nearly 40 minutes which is surprising because when you actually think back on it this year's iphones weren't the biggest upgrade i don't think that's a surprise to anyone that's basically what we have been expecting for months now and so it was it was definitely interesting to see people saying like oh this is so disappointing i'm like it's kind of exactly the same as what the rumors and leaks have been saying right so the design that john prosser leaked the renders that we saw from ian's elbow they were basically spot on those cad models were exactly accurate basically the biggest upgrade in my opinion would be promotion on the 13 pro that's that's a really big one i'm really looking forward to that and also the pro camera system got a pretty major upgrade so as people had predicted there's also a new pink finish but i have to say it's a little bit more toned down than i would have liked i thought that the idea of having a pink iphone was really really cool and we got it but it's so pale it looks almost exactly like the white one so i think they definitely could have sort of dialed up the saturation on that pink and it would have been a little bit better i gotta say i missed the green i thought the green from the iphone 12 was great i'm also kind of missing the purple i think the purple kind of does it for me more than the pink because the purple's more saturated but as far as design changes obviously pretty minor we have a new diagonally oriented camera system on the back and the reason that they did that is they put this sensor shift technology for the image stabilization and increased night mode capabilities that was something that was introduced on the 12 pro last year but now we're getting it on the 12 mini i mean the 13 mini and the 13 as well see i literally can't even get these things straight they look so similar the only other difference is the notch now apple didn't talk about this a whole lot and i think that speaks volumes about what a minor update it is basically they moved the speaker up to the top of the bezel and made the notch a little bit less wide not a huge deal it doesn't look like they made any ui changes to compensate for this or take advantage of the extra space so i think it's just like a little minor thing i'm really amused by the way that apple worded their decision to go to diagonal cameras like they really they really said that we designed a totally new architecture and turned the lenses 45 degrees to fit in our best dual camera system ever they just kind of went like that a little bit the thing that i think is going to make a pretty big difference with the new 13 is the bigger batteries so we're getting one and a half more hours of battery life on the mini and we're getting two and a half hours more battery life on the regular 13. that's pretty big because one of the big disappointments with the iphone 12 series was the battery life wasn't really all that great so now this should rectify that situation especially for mini fans i've got an iphone 12 mini i absolutely love it and the fact that it's now going to have better battery life with the 13 mini is a big upgrade and i'm glad that they're still at least caring a little bit about the mini form factor even though it's supposedly going to be going away next year so apple put the most energy into the camera systems on the pro iphones and i think these are some pretty solid upgrades now i get that a lot of people don't really care all that much about the pro cameras like honestly some people just use the cameras for taking pictures of things they want to remember and putting them in their camera roller funny pictures of their friends you know and that's totally fine and that's why the iphone 13 exists frankly if you're not interested in the pro cameras then you probably shouldn't buy an iphone 13 pro so for one the thing that i'm really really interested in is the macro photography so apparently these phones can focus as close as two centimeters with the ultra wide camera that is really really cool and i can't wait to try that out there's also upgrades to the telephoto lens it can do 3x zoom now so you've got a 6x optical zoom range on these phones it also has some cool software features like the fact that you can shoot cinematic video adjust the aperture adjust the focus after you've shot the video that's really cool that's basically the portrait mode for video that we had been talking about they just called it cinematic mode which is i guess a little bit more of a broad term but it's basically that functionality and i'm really really excited to try that out so a lot of that is software side right so it kind of makes you wonder is it going to look good is it going to work reliably we're going to have to find that out so make sure you're subscribed because you bet i'm going to be testing it and these new absolutely gigantic cameras also give you some improved performance with low light which i think is a welcome update night mode should be better it also works on the telephoto now we're also expecting to see better fidelity from the ultra wide camera which has always been a little bit fuzzy a little bit grainy especially in low light situations where the edges would really start to fall apart so i think that's going to be another big upgrade here so it is predominantly a camera upgrade but we do still have nice things like the new blue color which looks really good we also have promotion which i'm really really excited for i mean that was something that we thought we were gonna get last year and then people were disappointed when we didn't but now it's here and i'm happy about it but it's not a game changer you know it's not gonna be a deal breaker for avoiding an iphone 13 specifically for promotion the same thing goes for the battery life battery life is something that we wanted to see a little bit better from the 12 series and now it is so that's good these are incremental upgrades the big theme with all of the products that we saw today was incremental updates except for the ipad mini the ipad mini was pretty radical but the base model ipad the series 7 apple watch the iphone 13 and 13 pro they are incremental right so i think one thing that i've noticed from the takeaways is that the people that have had negative opinions have just been basically apple didn't do enough nobody has really been saying that what apple did do was bad or wrong they're just saying that it wasn't as interesting as they wanted but i've seen a lot of people saying oh well the iphones this year got ruined by the leaks and i can't help but disagree i think with or without leaks people were always going to be disappointed quote unquote with this year's iphones every time apple doesn't do something radical which is almost always people get disappointed now i can't exactly come out here and say that i'm super thrilled about these new iphones i'm not going to try to tell you that these are the most exciting things in the world i'm not that much of a sheep but to say that they suck because they were incremental improvements that we were expecting doesn't really hold up i mean when has apple really done some absolutely radical crazy stuff with the iphone it's almost never honestly it's kind of hard to take seriously all of the disappointment that people seem to have over apple events these days because i mean it's not like anyone was hyping you up for something that didn't happen as far as the iphone i get it for the apple watch you know there were leaks that didn't pan out whatever but for the iphone the leaks were very accurate and so you kind of knew what was coming it seemed like people before an apple event are just kind of like oh my gosh oh my gosh everything's going to come out we're going to get new macbook pros there's going to be a mac pro apple's going to release a new oled monitor and it's going to be 49 there's going to be a new iphone design there's going to be 17 different models and it's going to be this huge update but then as soon as tim cook walks out on stage oh this sucks this is so boring oh apple's bad i'm never gonna buy apple ever again this is so stupid my goodness it's annoying like can't we just enjoy a tech event and take things at face value yeah okay the iphones aren't the most crazy thing in the world the base model ipad isn't the most crazy thing in the world of course it's not going to be that crazy it's a base model ipad what exactly do you expect people were sitting in my comments saying luke what are you talking about there's no max this is so boring i have never said that there was going to be a mac at today's event not one credible person ever said that there was going to be a mac today and yet there were still people that expected that for some reason and i'm sorry but if you are disappointed because there were no max at the iphone event in september that's on you a mac has never ever come out at a september event there is no precedent nobody was saying that so why would you get your hopes up for that people just kind of think about whatever they want from apple and that's what they expect at whatever given event and then when apple does what apple always does which is iterate people freak out and they lose their minds and yeah i get that this year's iphones might not be that exciting to you and i get that you're maybe you're sitting there with your iphone 6s going oh i'm going to wait for next year's iphone which you've been doing for the past five years when they haven't been exciting enough but that's just how it works i'm sorry it's not anything different than what apple is known to do and maybe it doesn't knock your socks off but don't act like it's the end of the world wow that was a bit of a rant there anyway i'm i'm looking forward to these apple products as i said they're not the craziest things ever to come out but honestly i think everything today was solid maybe not the most exciting that's my take anyway thank you guys so much for watching make sure to get subscribed and stay tuned for a lot of content over the next couple of weeks and i'll see you in the next one youoh hey what's up it's almost like there was an apple event today and you're you're here for some hot takes that's disagree i think with or without leaks people were always going to be disappointed quote unquote with this year's iphones every time apple doesn't do something radical which is almost always people get disappointed now i can't exactly come out here and say that i'm super thrilled about these new iphones i'm not going to try to tell you that these are the most exciting things in the world i'm not that much of a sheep but to say that they suck because they were incremental improvements that we were expecting doesn't really hold up i mean when has apple really done some absolutely radical crazy stuff with the iphone it's almost never honestly it's kind of hard to take seriously all of the disappointment that people seem to have over apple events these days because i mean it's not like anyone was hyping you up for something that didn't happen as far as the iphone i get it for the apple watch you know there were leaks that didn't pan out whatever but for the iphone the leaks were very accurate and so you kind of knew what was coming it seemed like people before an apple event are just kind of like oh my gosh oh my gosh everything's going to come out we're going to get new macbook pros there's going to be a mac pro apple's going to release a new oled monitor and it's going to be 49 there's going to be a new iphone design there's going to be 17 different models and it's going to be this huge update but then as soon as tim cook walks out on stage oh this sucks this is so boring oh apple's bad i'm never gonna buy apple ever again this is so stupid my goodness it's annoying like can't we just enjoy a tech event and take things at face value yeah okay the iphones aren't the most crazy thing in the world the base model ipad isn't the most crazy thing in the world of course it's not going to be that crazy it's a base model ipad what exactly do you expect people were sitting in my comments saying luke what are you talking about there's no max this is so boring i have never said that there was going to be a mac at today's event not one credible person ever said that there was going to be a mac today and yet there were still people that expected that for some reason and i'm sorry but if you are disappointed because there were no max at the iphone event in september that's on you a mac has never ever come out at a september event there is no precedent nobody was saying that so why would you get your hopes up for that people just kind of think about whatever they want from apple and that's what they expect at whatever given event and then when apple does what apple always does which is iterate people freak out and they lose their minds and yeah i get that this year's iphones might not be that exciting to you and i get that you're maybe you're sitting there with your iphone 6s going oh i'm going to wait for next year's iphone which you've been doing for the past five years when they haven't been exciting enough but that's just how it works i'm sorry it's not anything different than what apple is known to do and maybe it doesn't knock your socks off but don't act like it's the end of the world wow that was a bit of a rant there anyway i'm i'm looking forward to these apple products as i said they're not the craziest things ever to come out but honestly i think everything today was solid maybe not the most exciting that's my take anyway thank you guys so much for watching make sure to get subscribed and stay tuned for a lot of content over the next couple of weeks and i'll see you in the next one you\n"
