Rescue Me, Decor it Yourself

The Decor It Yourself Show Presents: Sugar Mutts Rescue

Welcome to Decor It Yourself, the source for all your DIY nesting needs! I'm sure you've all noticed how much we love and adore our Gracie Strudel Dream Weaver. Believe me, she can get me through the night. She is our second rescue dog whom we adopted when we still had our first Thurman rescuing dogs is the best thing we've ever done and we've decided that now is the perfect time to adopt a companion for Gracie.

So, here we are at Muddy Paws' holistic pet store to talk to Amy about her awesome Foster-to-Adoption program she started called Sugar Mutts Rescue. My name is Amy Marciano, and we are at the local holistic pet supply shop called U Muddy Paws. Uh, sugar muts rescue is basically a collective of volunteers I started it 2 years ago. It's a Foster-based dog rescue so we rescue dogs from various situations primarily from the city shelters where they euthanize.

So, we can try to get as many of them out of there as possible. They go into foster homes then we look for permanent Homes at least 60% of the dogs that are abandoned in shelters are euthanized in this country. There is a very high chance that dog is not going to get a second chance if you know you're going to adopt a dog and you know the day you're going to pick the dog up or um it's good to kind of be prep prepared and have a dialogue with us really. The best way to have a dog adjust is to keep consistent schedule as far as eating and walking and making them I mean dogs are even more than humans are like creatures of habit so they really like some kind of structure um in their lives.

And that helps them feel more secure and at ease when they change environments and stuff. We've been fostering Milo for 2 weeks now, and we're about to sign the adoption papers to officially make him part of the family if you don't have a sugar muts in your area go to the national petrescue resources petfinder.com and adoptapet.com.

Are you ready to go home and see Gracie? Let's go buddy to help Milo feel comfortable and to train him where his space is. I went ahead and made him his own pet bed for some great pet bed options check out de yourself pet bed episode or check out Laura Marie's tutorial from her blog pretty little things.

When we return, I'll show you how to make some organic homemade dog treats. Now that Milo has a snugly place of his own it's time to start training him the rules of the coal household to go along with a method of positive reinforcement. We're going to make some homemade organic dog treats to help with the process.

The ingredients you will need are eggs peanut butter bananas honey and organic brown rice flour. First, preheat your oven to 325° and lightly grease your baking sheet. Stir together 1 egg 1/3 cup of peanut butter 1/2 cup of mashed banana and 1 tsp of Honey now stir in 1 cup of flour and mix well knead the dough on a lightly flowed surface adding flour until it's not sticky anymore.

Roll the dough out until it's a four of an inch thick and cut into desired shapes bake the treat for about 30 minutes remove from the oven and let cool all right. Let's try him out Gracie, Milo sit good dogs down Milo is a wonderful addition to our family and we are thrilled to have adopted our third rescue dog. The rewards are endless with these guys have you adopted a rescued friend or are you thinking about it? Let us know in a comment.
