same as the M1 iMac from 2021 but that's not a bad thing because I mean look at it it's stunning so in this review video we're going to discuss why I sold my M1 iMac and I'm going to keep the M3 we're going to talk about the major mistake that you need to avoid when buying an iMac and of course if you should consider buying an M3 iMac over something like a Mac Mini so let's start by expanding on that design because you might not know this but my very first Mac was an iMac it was a 2009 iMac and I've owned several others since then and in my opinion this right here is Peak design for the iMac the boxy frame the color options the way the power cable magnetically attaches to the back of the Mac the ethernet port built into the power cord there just isn't anything design-wise that I wish was different okay maybe the chin and the bezels but I mean come on this is $1300 machine you can't have everything plus my studio display also has chunky bezels and that costs more than the iMac without a computer being built inside the 4.5k retina display more than makes up for the chin though because it has a resolution of 4480 by 2520 at 218 pixels per inch with support for 1 million colors and a 500 nit Peak brightness this is the same display as my M1 iMac but I went from a 5k Studio display to this iMac and the difference is not going to be major unless you do a lot of color correcting and you crank that brightness up all the way there's hardly any difference in your day-to-day usage and by the way I do also love how easy it is to rotate this display and it's also very easy to pick up and move around to show somebody you know if you need to show like a design project to somebody and in the office or whatever the case may be it's just very easy and very lightweight to maneuver around with we do get color matching accessories with the M3 iMac including the braided cable and while USBC would have been nice to have for the keyboard and the mouse I personally do not mind lightning being used here especially since it's not like the cord is going to be used very often I maybe use the cord to plug these in maybe once a month maybe twice a month at most the battery lasts a while so that was never really a big deal to me but heading back inside we do have six High Fidelity speakers with Force cancelling woofers and the sound on this machine is solid for playing music for playing videos although I will say if you're trying to focus on dialogue while watching a movie I would recommend you disc connect your airpods via Bluetooth and just listen to it that way however if you look closely on the le- hand side of the iMac we do also have a 3.5 mm headphone jack which now comes with support for high impedance headphones which is something that was not included with the 2021 M1 iMac but on the back side of the iMac is going to be where we have our first major issue and that is something that you're going to want to avoid when purchasing one of these iMacs and that has to do with the port selection you see the base M3 iMac only has two ports down here on the back side whereas the mid-tier upgraded model has double that we have four ports on the back however neither one of these iMacs comes with an SD card slot for some odd reason but if if you're anything like me and you need to have an SD card slot or if you just want to expand your Port selection on the back today's sponsor basis has you covered their new metal gleam USB C hubs not only look awesome with that metallic finish but they also allow you to plug in additional USBC devices but more importantly both the 6 in1 and the 10in one hubs give you fast data transfer speeds of 10 gbits a second my favorite of course is the 10 in1 because it does have that SD and micr SD card slot which is missing from the iMac it does also come with two HDMI ports two USBC ports one of which is 100 WS three usba a ports and an ethernet port and since we have two HDMI ports you can cast an external display at the full 4K 120 HZ or if you want a dual monitor setup on say like a Macbook you can use both ports and get a solid output of 4K at 60 HZ oh and you might have also noticed this button on the Hub that is a screen lock button so when you press it it locks the external monitor that you're casting to that way you don't need to disconnect the Hub to stop sharing your screen but of course if you don't need all of that extra I/O the smaller more compact 6 in1 Hub is going to be a better solution for you this one has two USBC ports two usba a ports one HDMI port and the ethernet port and you do also get those same transfer speeds of 10 gbits a second so if you want to pick up one of these basis USBC hubs for yourself make make sure to click my link down in the description below now if you're using an iMac as a family computer then you might not worry so much about the port selection on the back however if you're doing any type of creative work or if you use any type of external ssds or anything like that and you do not pick up one of those basis USBC hubs or some other USBC Hub then you will absolutely want to pay the extra $200 to get the mid-tier IMAX you get double the port selection but that's not the only thing that you gain with that extra $200 because you will also get a gigabit Ethernet port built into to the power brick whereas the base model just does not include that unless you select it online when ordering and pay the extra $30 now this upgraded model also comes with a keyboard with Touch ID up in the top right hand corner for easily paying for things online and unlocking your Mac oh and also the $1,500 mid-tier model also gives you two additional GPU cores so for $200 more it's a no-brainer to go with the mid- tier option if you ever plan on doing any creative work or if you just want to futureproof your iMac and speaking of creative work let's talk about the performance and let me preface this by reminding you that this is not a prole machine like if you're going to be doing intense you know 3D Graphics 8K video editing you know building machine learning models things like that you're not going to want an iMac you know you're going to want to get maybe an M2 Pro Mac Mini or a Mac Studio they're going to give you significantly better per performance and they're also just going to be a better price because if you were to spec up the iMac all the way up it just simply would not be worth it with the performance that you would get if I were to upgrade something I would likely choose the ram upgrade to go from 8 GB to 16 GB but that's mainly just because I use ssds I use external drives for everything so it's not a deal breaker for me however I do have to say that 256 GB of storage is miserable in 2023 I don't know why Apple was shipping these with only 256 gigs like that's not even enough for my iPhone so I loaded up one of my videos in Final Cup Pro to edit and it handled it just fine as a matter of fact I'm editing this video right here that you're watching on this iMac so you know it does everything well I I did notice some lag and I did get the spinning beach ball like one time or maybe twice when I was applying tracking blur effects and just different motion bfx from third parties but it wasn't enough to make me want to quit using it and go back to my Mac Studio now this wasn't a super intensive you know video with you know an hourong video with tons of effects but it's probably more than your average person is going to do on an iMac and it handled it just fine I did also color grade a photo which is the photo that you see in the thumbnail for this video in Lightroom that was also a breeze on this machine and even though I was exporting a video and editing a photo in Lightroom at the same time there wasn't really any major lag despite some memory swap taking place I didn't really you know this is the one time where I did get the beach ball but it wasn't wasn't anything too intense it lasted like 2 seconds and it was gone I did also test out some gaming on the iMac because the M3 chip does introduce Hardware accelerated raid tracing and the game's actually played pretty well given the specs it did seem better than the M1 iMac that I had but I there wasn't really as big of a difference as I was hoping for in gaming between M1 and M3 I thought it would be a major change but it wasn't really I mean I was still averaging around 30 frames per second on the games that I tested out so it's not like the games were unplayable but at the end of the day like I've been saying throughout this video the M1 iMac performs very similar to the M3 iMac so you might be wondering you might be asking yourself well why are you going to go through the hassle of selling your M1 iMac it's a pain to ship that thing out and all that why are you going to do that just to keep the M3 which is pretty much the same well there's two main reasons number one is something I haven't even talked about yet and that is Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E so I do have a Wi-Fi 6E router so if I want to take advantage of the full speeds I need a device that's compatible with that you know Wi-Fi 6E so this is going to be better when I am browsing on Wi-Fi because I don't usually have ethernet hooked up to my iMac so that's going to be a big difference for me and then also Bluetooth 5.3 so I use my airpods every single day Bluetooth 5.3 is going to help even with the keyboard and the mouse most likely because you're going to get more reliable connections you're going to be able to connect from further away you can connect more devices all those things make Bluetooth 5 . 3 a better upgrade as well over 5.0 on the M1 iMac and the second main reason is because if I do not sell my M1 iMac now it's probably going to be pretty much worthless by the next time a new iMac comes out so we don't know when that's going to be it's probably going to be M5 since Apple seems to be on a 2ear cycle for or two chip cycle I should say for the iMac so at that rate it seems like the iMac M1 is probably going to be pretty much worthless like right now the M1 iMac is going for around 800 to $900 on eBay so I'm satisfied with that it's going to pay for about half or maybe even a little bit over half of this iMac so to me that's worth it and let me just say if you have an Intel iMac right now I do absolutely think it's worth it to upgrade to the M3 iMac even upgrade to the M1 is going to be worth it like if you have a 27 in yes you are going to be missing out on the bigger display which could be a deal breaker for some people along with the port selection on the back maybe less than you're used to but trust me this is going to be significantly faster than that Intel machine plus the new iMacs just look way better and they weigh a lot less like I had that 27 in and that thing weighed a ton this thing is so much lighter weight and it just looks so much better sitting in an office okay so now let me give you my thoughts on which model of iMac I think you should buy so I think for the base model you're going to be a light casual user who mainly just browses the web you maybe edit the occasional photo or video and you maybe do some very light gaming that's who I think the base model is for but for the mid-tier model which is the one I have right here the one I recommend to most people this is going to be for someone who browses the web but also does a lot of creative work like you edit 4K videos maybe some digital painting in Photoshop or even some light to medium music production so earlier I said how it's not a bad idea to spend an extra $200 to go from 8 gigs to 16 gigs and I would say that you should do that if you're making money from your creative work because I think you know the time you're going to save while multitasking will likely pay for itself with the money you're going to earn so you know especially if you're doing a lot of web-based creative work like with canva if you're you know building out websites with Squarespace or framer or something like that you are going to notice a difference and an improvement with 16 gigs of RAM and of course you can upgrade the SSD to 512 GB but in my opinion you're better off just buying external ssds and running your projects off of those drives because if you find yourself needing to spend $400 or more on upgrades you might as well just you know buy a spec up Mac Mini or even a Bas Mac Studio and hook that up to an external display because at that point you're you're getting in high dollar territory where the the bang for your buck is just simply not going to be worth it with the iMac so if you're in the market for an all-in-one computer and you don't want to deal with all of the Clutter and all the cords you just want a clean Super athetic really solid looking computer there is nothing better on the market than the iMac both in terms of performance and also looks I mean I really don't think there's anything that looks better than this when you go into a home office or into work and you see this thing just sitting on a desk it just has a presence to it and I don't have kids but I would imagine that if you do have kids this is going to be a computer they're going to be obsessed with so just prepare for that if you get this for yourself your kids are probably going to love it and
