Hue LED Wi-Fi Light Bulb Review (from Philips)

Installing Hue Bulbs: A Hands-On Review

I recently purchased Hue bulbs at the Apple Store for around $200. My friend, Pixie, was going to help me install them. As we began, we were reminded that these bulbs are not suitable for use with dimmers, and it's probably not a good idea to turn on the lights before trying to unscrew the bulbs. Despite this warning, we moved forward with the installation.

One of the things that makes Hue bulbs so neat is their ability to control colors in unison or individually via an iOS app, which is free to download. The current version of the app has received some negative reviews on the App Store, but I didn't let that deter me. After all, it's still a free tool that allows me to customize my lights.

Now that the bulbs are installed, we can test their capabilities. According to Hue, I can connect up to 50 bulbs to the same access point, although I'm not sure if I even have that many sockets in my house. Each bulb weighs 8.5 Watts and is controlled by a puck. As I plug in the puck, I'm able to control the bulbs, which are cool and wild, with colors like white, pink, green (which isn't really green at all, but more of a greenish hue), and red.

Let's go ahead and try maximum brightness on two of the bulbs. As we adjust the brightness, we can see the color change accordingly. I'm excited to explore the other features of Hue, including renaming the bridge, finding new lights or bridges, logging into a portal, and creating themes. As I rename one of the bulbs, it flashes at me, allowing me to select various scenes like deep sea red and purple pencils.

I'd like to try out the Sunset scene next, which allows me to adjust the strength of the color. It's interesting to see how Hue can create different moods and atmospheres with its lighting system. I should have cleaned out those bugs when I had the chance, but now that they're installed, we can test them out.

To customize my bulbs further, I can take a picture of Pixie and drag each one around to get the color just right. It's almost perfect – close enough! In addition to adjusting colors, I can also schedule scenes in advance, which is perfect for getting into the holiday spirit. With Christmas just around the corner, I know exactly what I'll be putting on my holiday wish list: more Hue bulbs.

As a final note, I'd like to give the Hue system a thumbs up. It's been a pleasure to install and test out these bulbs, and I'm excited to see how they'll continue to evolve in the future.
