Apple's Latest Announcements: What You Need to Know
Apple has recently announced several new products and updates, including the iPhone with hands-free Siri, a wireless charging case option for AirPods, and new iPads. The company's iPhone upgrade features a wireless charging case that holds more charge than the standard charging case, which is priced at $159. Alternatively, users can pay $1.99 for the wireless charging option, or $79 to update their case to the wireless charging one.
The newer iPad models, on the other hand, have received significant updates in terms of tech inside, but did not receive the full Cinderella's treatment seen on last year's Pros. The iPad Mini was probably in need of a refresh after a four-year hiatus, but it still looks pretty much the same with its 7.9-inch screen, thicker bezels, and home button. However, the technology inside has gotten better with a brighter true tone Retina display, a 12Bionic chip, m12 coprocessor, and Apple pencil support - although not the new one, it's just the original.
The iPad Air also received significant updates, with similar specs to the Mini, but featuring a 10.5-inch Retina screen and the same A12 Bionic chip, m12 coprocessor, and Apple pencil support. The Air keeps its crown as the lightest of the larger models, weighing in at just over a pound, but it is no longer the slimmest one of all the iPad Pros. Both the Mini and Air are significantly cheaper than last year's iPad Pro's, with the Mini priced at $399 for 64GB, and the Air priced at $499 with the same storage option.
The iPad Pros were also due for an update, but they still look exactly the same as the previous generations - although they did get significant performance upgrades under the hood. The eighth and ninth generation Intel Core CPUs and new AMD Radeon GPUs will provide improved performance, with the highest configuration available coming with a Core i9 processor and Radeon Pro Vega graphics. The base price for the 21.5-inch model is still the same, but users can now spend up to $2,250 if they max out all the specs.
For pro users, there is still hope for a more dramatic overhaul of the iPad Pro, with some speculating that a whole new redesign might be on the horizon - hopefully by this time next year. The only remaining rumored product to announce is an Apple Air Power Mat, which could come as a sneaky little press release perhaps to avoid the embarrassment of admitting two years late on stage.
As for upcoming events, there's still much anticipation around the April 20th Apple event, where the company will likely be showcasing its new video streaming service. With Disney rumored to be weeks away from launching its own streaming service and Warner media said to follow suit, the pressure is on for Apple to deliver and meet Hollywood's expectations. A recent New York Times report suggests that Apple's super secretive nature is becoming a concern with some of its content partners, who are worried about how the company may try to micromanage how its products are portrayed on this platform.
Apple has also been in talks with companies like HBO, Starz, and Showtime to license their content for the streaming service. However, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings confirmed that his company will not be a part of Apple's streaming service, warning that this space will get very competitive very quickly. Furthermore, Apple's Senior Vice President Eddy Cue revealed that the company is not interested in licensing sports content, but they are interested in becoming an intermediary to curate a better sports experience for fans in the TV app.
