Nintendo Labo won me and my kid over

Nintendo Labo is a Crazy Construction and Gaming Set Arriving This April

This April, Nintendo will be releasing a crazy construction and gaming set that turns the Nintendo Switch into a modular toy that transforms into a wild combination of paper craft things. The set, dubbed Nintendo Labo, is designed for parents and children to collaborate on projects together. One of the wildest projects in the set is the Nintendo Labo robot, an $80 standalone kit that turns your body into a cardboard mech suit. This cardboard mech suit comes with a backpack, arm and leg controls, and a flip-down visor that control the giant robot's movements, allowing you to throw punches and stomp around.

The robot also features a cardholder system that allows for customization of how the cardboard creations communicate and connect. The Nintendo Labo garage is a software program that will allow anyone to customize these interactions, giving users the ability to make things like an electric guitar with cat sounds using the motorcycle handlebars to control the RC car or maybe even controlling other creations in new and innovative ways.

Another part of the set is the $70 variety kit, which does several things all in one package. This kit features a fishing pole that feels like you're casting a line into the Switch screen, with rumbling sounds when you reel it in, making you feel like you've caught a big fish. It also comes with a cardboard piano that really works and changes musical styles depending on what cardboard plug you pop into it. The Switch can even turn into a motorcycle with a cardboard kit that acts like handlebars, accelerating as you twist the handles.

The Nintendo Labo set also includes an RC car kit that works with up to two mini cars simultaneously turning the Joy-Con on controllers in motion, creating a buzzing and moving robot bug effect. Each of these games is a blast to play for the short time we got to play them, and they feel like the sort of crazy ideas that once you switch promise when the Switch console was first released last year.

One of the most surprising aspects of the Nintendo Labo set is the construction process itself. While it can get complicated at times, the instructions are really well-made and show all the steps in 3D. Coloring in the creations with pens and stickers is totally optional but recommended. We had time to make the RC cars and most of a fishing pole, and it was clear and fun for both my nine-year-old and I.

The Nintendo Labo set may have some limitations on durability over time, we don't know how well these cardboard creations will hold up, but given what we've experienced so far with this innovative project, it might be enough reason to get the Switch and give it a try.
