M2 MacBook Air or M1 iPad Pro Make the RIGHT choice!

I recently had the opportunity to play NBA 2K on my iPad Pro with my Xbox controller, which I was excited about since both platforms now support native Bluetooth connectivity. However, when I decided to take my gaming experience to the next level by playing for an hour and a half on my M2 MacBook Air, I was surprised by how hot it got. To the point where I couldn't even have it on my bare lap without putting a pillow on my knees and having the computer itself on the pillow, which likely didn't help with the cooling process at all.

I want to note that this experience is worth sharing because while gaming on a laptop or desktop can be a familiar and comfortable experience for many people, playing games like NBA 2K on a MacBook Air can produce unexpected results like this one. On the other hand, when I play NBA 2K on my iPad Pro with iPad OS 16 beta software, it doesn't get warm to the point where I couldn't touch it or put it on my lap, even running at high performance levels.

It's worth mentioning that Apple added some extra GPU cores in recent models and promises up to 40 better performance on the GPU side for games like NBA 2K. Although playing through Apple Arcade optimized for the iPad Pro was likely a big part of this smooth experience, I still wanted to share my findings with everyone, especially considering that many people might be interested in using their devices for gaming.

I ultimately decided that if I had to choose between these two options and were only going to buy one device, I would go with the M2 iPad Pro every time. The versatility of this device is incredible - it can seamlessly transition from being a tablet to a digital notepad to becoming my main console or even my work computer. However, for those who prefer staying with something more traditional like a laptop, the MacBook Air is an excellent option as well.

If someone were to ask me which one to recommend if they're not tech-savvy and need a new device, I would say go with either of these options because they will be very familiar. With a little learning curve at first, especially when it comes to using iPad OS versus Mac OS, it's possible to get everything done on both devices without much hassle.

Furthermore, having both an M2 MacBook Air and an M1 MacBook Air could actually complement each other well in terms of functionality. Apple calls this ecosystem the "world garden", emphasizing the seamless interactions between its products. Features like Universal Control and Sidecar take full advantage of this integrated experience.

Before signing off for now, I'd love to hear from you guys: if I gave you $1500 today, which device would you pick up? Is it the iPad Pro because you're more familiar with it, or is it the souped-up M2 MacBook Air that caught your attention due to its enhanced performance capabilities? Let me know in the comments below.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso i've been using the m2 macbook air in that midnight colorway for about a week now but if you know anything about me then you know that for the better part of the last four years i've been using an ipad pro as my main computer during that time i still use some sort of version of a macbook air for that five percent of stuff that the ipad pro at least at that point couldn't really do i've used both of these machines for both creative tasks like video editing photo editing things of that nature but then also on the corporate side with crm software as a microsoft suite and everything that comes along with that so with both devices now merging from both a software and a cost perspective i thought i could give some pretty good insight as to which device is going to be better for your workflow whether you are on the creative side or more on the corporate business side or right in the middle and you need the machine to do both of those things so let's compare that m2 macbook air to the m1 ipad pro and see which one for the price is better for your workflow let's talk about it so the first thing that i do want to talk about is actually spec these out and price these out accordingly because i technically have baseline models of both devices so my personal ipad pro only has 128 gigs of storage and then the baseline model macbook air has 256 gigs of storage but if you price these out with the same storage capacity then for 1200 bucks on the m2 macbook air side you get eight gigs of ram 256 gigs of storage and obviously that m2 chip the new chassis you know the new magsafe and all that stuff that comes with it and then for the m1 ipad pro side and we'll be talking about the 12.9 inch primarily but on that ipad pro side you will be spending that same 1200 for an 8 gig of ram 256 gigabytes of storage variation of the ipad pro but that does not include the magic keyboard or an apple pencil so if you need to get those things as well and you will need the magic keyboard to really make it a computer replacement that's an additional 350 now again we're going off retail pricing off apple store you can go to the education store and get 100 to 150 off there's always stuff in the refurbished section but we're going to stick to the retail brand new pricing from the apple store so purely from a spec to price ratio the m2 macbook air is a little bit better because you're spending 1200 bucks you know you get an entire laptop and then on the ipad pro side with a magic keyboard you're spelling fifteen hundred and fifty dollars and that doesn't include an apple pencil which is another 130 dollars now there's a bunch of different third-party accessories that are much much cheaper but if you want that perfect apple experience the magic keyboard is you know in a league of its own in my opinion so now that we've established price for both of them so you got 1200 for the baseline m2 macbook air and then you have 1550 for a ipad pro 256 gigabyte variant with the magic keyboard attached to it and what i want to do now is talk about the actual hardware of each device and compare them to see where you're getting the most value for that price but again from a hardware perspective so let's start off with the displays so on the ipad pro it's an amazing display everybody you know you're dealing with a mini led 120 hertz pro motion retina display which is in my opinion the cheapest way to get to that pro display xdr level of quality because that display cost six thousand dollars while the ipad pro at the baseline level will cost you eleven hundred dollars to get into that level of quality when it comes to a display on a device you also have some crazy brightness levels again it is a tablet first so it is meant to be used outside in the open in direct sunlight kind of like a cell phone or smartphone so you have a thousand nits of brightness on the ipad pro and the peak brightness with hdr and everything turned on gets up to 1600 nits of brightness which is absolutely amazing and i've used this ipad pro outside a ton and at no point am i ever like ah like there's too much glare even with a screen protector on it there's never too much glare on the ipad pro to the point where i can't see it versus on the m2 macbook air which did get some upgrades it got a little bit more brightness compared to last year's macbook air or the last iteration of the macbook air but you're dealing with a 13.6 inch ips lcd panel which is pretty classic it's only 60 hertz and you'll be able to really tell the difference in pro motion versus a 60hz display if you do have them side by side and then with the laptop you are getting 500 nits of brightness which in indoor settings you know zero issues whatsoever it's only when you go outside maybe in the middle of a hot summer day or you're in direct sunlight where it's gonna be a little bit too much glare to get some serious work done but for the most part i haven't had any issues with that 500 brightness level on the m2 macbook air and i will say if i wasn't an avid ipad user and you just gave me the m2 macbook air the display would be great you know i just been spoiled with that promotion 120 hertz you know and now with the mini led it's just a beautiful display to watch content on to get worked on on so if i didn't have the ipad pro sitting right next to me and i wasn't used to using that display i'd be perfectly happy with the m2 macbook air having them side by side you can really tell the difference and the best way for you guys to test this out is go to an apple store and grab yourself an iphone 13 pro versus an iphone 13 and you'll be able to see and feel that the actual pro motion in that 120 hertz is a decent difference in terms of tangibility and like clickiness and feel it feels like you're actually grabbing the actual icons and you're grabbing you know the safari web page when you are scrolling through it so again it is a touch interface first so it's a little bit different how you interact with it but overall the display this category i'm gonna give it to the ipad just because overall it's a better display in my opinion but nothing wrong with the m2 macbook air display so now let's move on to the camera systems on both these devices so obviously without even really thinking about it or talking about it we're gonna have to give this one to the ipad pro be just because it does have rear sensors it has a real camera system like an iphone camera system on the rear again i literally never ever ever use the rear camera i think i've used it once or twice to scan a document maybe but outside of that i never use the rear cameras but you do have a wide angle and an ultra wide angle lens in there both 12 megapixel cameras and you have the lidar scanner which again i literally never use but it has some great real world applications and i'm sure over time you know that lidar scanner is going to help us with a lot of ar kind of implementation so a lot of augmented reality and then obviously on the m2 air you have no rear sensors but you do have a new 1080p camera on the front in order to take facetime calls and video chats which is a decent upgrade compared to last year's model with only the 720p but again it's nothing crazy like the selfie camera on the ipad pro itself is way better it comes with center stage built right into there so it does have that little motion display so when you're moving around it does follow you along so that's always a cool sight and you are able to record 1080p 30 frames per second in hd on the front selfie camera so overall i will give both the camera systems a leg up on the ipad pro versus m2 air but again if you're just doing some normal zoom calls some conference calls you're not using it for anything creative where everything needs to be super crispy then the m2 air is going to be more than enough i just do wish that in that notch they were able to fit face id sensors because that's a perfect segue into the next category which is authentication so on the authentication side it's very simple you have touch id on the m2 air which is extremely fast it does require a little motion of the hand right you got to move your hand forward to unlock it or if you have an apple watch it will unlock with your apple watch which is how i have it set up but then on the ipad pro you have face id which works in any orientation it works every single time it works flawlessly and technically you don't have to actually do anything but you do have to actually swipe up to actually unlock it fully after the face id is engaged to continue on this hardware train let's talk about the actual speaker systems technically they both have quad speakers it's just where they're placed so on the ipad pro they're all around the side railings of the ipad pro and then in the m2 macbook air they actually moved it from the sides of the keyboard which that's how it was on the m1 air so now in the m2 air it's actually in the hinge itself but it's still a quad speaker system and honestly it's a great speaker i'm gonna have some b-roll showing you guys what they both sound like and i'll let you guys make a decision on which one sounds better do in my opinion the ipad pro is just a little bit better it's a little bit more of a fuller sound a little bit more bass especially if you have the ipad pro like sitting on a table then you get a nice little thump whenever you're listening to music but overall you're going to be happy with either of these i'm just a little bit biased on the ipad pro side because that's what i love to use and that's what i use on a daily basis but i would consider the m2 air best in class for this size computer because it's way above average and way better than expected so so far in our little battle in our competition the ipad pro is winning but this next one has to do with the actual port situation so on the ipad pro you have one thunderbolt 4 port on the right hand side of the ipad pro depending on the orientation that you're holding it in and then if you have the magic keyboard which i do suggest you get if you're going to make it your only computer then you have a charging port on the hinge of that magic keyboard for the ipad pro keep in mind it's only four power pass-through it has zero data pass-through capabilities and through that port you can technically only charge up to 21 watts and then if you plug directly into the ipad pro you get up to 33 watts of quote on quote fast charging which to me is more than enough because technically i always leave it plugged in for the most part but then on the macbook air side on the m2 air now with the addition of the new magsafe you have two free thunderbolt 4 ports you can have one connected to a display another one connected to a hard drive or a dongle or whatever you see fit and then the magsafe as long as you have the correct brick will charge up to 67 watts fast charge for the m2 macbook air and one thing that i did wish kind of talking about the ports and the capabilities of these ports both of these devices only allow you to have one external display now they can push up to a 6k display so if you do have a 5 6 000 pro display xdr and you want to plug in both your ipad or your m2 air by all means go for it because it can output to that type of display but again you can only do it to one external display keep that in mind so speaking about ports and charging let's talk about battery life battery life is a very important aspect of these devices because they're on the go devices they're mobile they're versatile they're thin they're slim they're light they work extremely well outside of an office and this one by far goes to the m2 air apple promises 18 hours of video playback through apple tv so if you stay in apple's wall garden in their app ecosystem you're going to get a lot a lot of battery life like 15 16 to 18 hours probably i personally i use a lot of chrome a lot of slack a lot of third-party applications and i still couldn't even go through an entire battery in one single day so this is a absolute weekend device you can plug it in take it with you for two three days at 100 with mid to heavy use and you'll be totally fine like i was putting this thing through its paces and i could not run down the battery in one day's time i was playing video games i was editing videos i was going through the microsoft suite i was had like 18 chrome tabs open playing videos and still it was working perfectly fine and the battery life did not even move versus the ipad pro ipad pro is very hit or miss if you're doing some very task intensive things you're only going to get like four to five hours of battery life especially if you're plugged into that magic keyboard if you're just watching some videos scrolling through safari answering emails you can get closer to the eight to ten hours of battery life apple says we get up to 10 hours of battery life on the 12.9 inch ipad pro i don't think i've had a single day like that in my entire life of owning this ipad pro so keep that in mind if you want something that's a battery warrior then the m2 macbook air is going to be the way to go because that thing is going to last you for a very long time and even with the m1 macbook air that i've had since the release i've used that thing a lot and even after about 18 19 months of use the battery life is still extremely strong and i never have to plug it in after a full days of use so keep that in mind if you are thinking about something purely based on battery life so the last thing i want to bring up from a hardware perspective are just the overall designs of both of these devices so on the ipad pro side obviously it's a tablet first it's very industrial look i mean the main and only real reason why i decided to go full ipad pro back in 2018 was purely based on aesthetic i got that ipad pro and thought to myself wow like how is this computer how could something so light and so slim and something that's so powerful just how did they make that happen i remember thinking and being in awe of like this ipad pro can video edit i can facetime i can get word documents done i can search through the web i can use it as a bluetooth speaker i can do whatever i want with this tablet and it's so slim and sleek and beautiful that that's the main reason why i went with the ipad pro and then you have the versatility aspect of the ipad pro because again it is a tablet first but you slap it on a magic keyboard and it's a computer right then and there you also have the apple pencil it turns into a digital notepad i use it as my main gaming console of choice i don't do too much gaming and we'll touch on that in a little bit but i use it as my main console because i just love playing nba 2k on apple arcade with my xbox controller and then you have the design of the new m2 air which again in its own right is beautiful too i love how they went back to that squared off design more symmetrical no more wedge you know it kind of fits that new aesthetic of the more industrial like uh mac studio vibe which we all love to see the midnight version is amazing it is a big fingerprint magnet but wiping it a couple times a day doesn't really hurt anybody just know that it is a fingerprint magnet after about a week of use and i know a lot of people have their opinions on the notch on the m2 macbook air and for the most part yes the moment you open it especially if you haven't used one of the macbook pros of late which i never have you will see it you will notice it it is in your face but then after about an hour or two of use it completely disappears so overall the notch is really not that big of a deal again i just wish they were able to add face id into that notch pretty much a preference thing when it comes to the overall design of each device there's something about the ipad pro being able to slap it on the magic keyboard with that cool floating hinge design and then it turned into a laptop you pull it off and then you're in affinity photo editing a thumbnail with the apple pencil a lot of versatility on the ipad pro side so i personally like the ipad pro a little bit better but the m2 air also again a beautiful device like i would still be ecstatic to use it as my main computer so now that we got all the hardware stuff out of the way because that's something that's very tangible that you can actually listen to when it comes to the stereo speakers the screen obviously one is better than the other but when it comes to software it's a big big preference thing so just to preface before we go into the software aspect i am running the public beta of ipad os 16 on my ipad pro so i do have access to stage manager and then on the actual m2 macbook air i'm just running the regular version of mac os monterey but i thought the best way to talk about software it's not really showing you guys the ins and outs because i'm sure you know what mac os looks like you know what ipad os looks like what i want to talk about is the different workflows that i'm able to do with both of these devices because i am on the creative side right i make youtube videos i edit thumbnails i edit videos in lumafusion right i'm making sure that everything is nicely tight and fit on the creative side but then i'm also on the corporate side i use a lot of the microsoft suite i use slack all the time i'm using web-based crms like salesforce and and microsoft dynamics so these are all things that you can use on both of the devices so i wanted to walk you guys through each one of my workflows and see which one overall is a little bit better a little bit more efficient so we'll go from there so on the creative side it's very simple they're both very good machines for the creative side right that's what apple's known for they're for the creative they're for the person rendering games or for the person you know editing video and things like that so my workflow is very very simple for these youtube videos i record everything on an iphone 13 pro max i airdrop that footage onto the ipad pro i edit that footage on lumafusion in the ipad pro then make a thumbnail inside of affinity photo which is kind of like a photoshop but for the ipad and then just upload everything onto the youtube app and that is my creative workflow everybody it's that simple but the same can be said on that m2 macbook air you know you can still use your iphone 13 pro max or any iphone for that matter to film your a-roll and your b-roll you can still air drop it onto the m2 air use something free like imovie that comes included or you can use something like final cut pro it just depends on what your workflow and what you're used to right i know a lot of people were upset that things like final cut pro and xcode and the adobe suite didn't come to the ipad pro this year and they've been mad about that for a very long time because they think ipad apps aren't professional enough but in my opinion to each their own like for me lumafusion affinity photo those are professional enough applications for me to get professional work done and then on the mac os side you know everybody has their own version of a professional app it's just a matter of what you need to get done and how you can get that done and make sure that you can get that done so if you're used to mac os stick with mac os and if you're used to ipad os like i am stick with ipad os and have a little bit more fun on the ipad side because ipad's just a more fun device to use and now let's talk about the corporate workflow so let's say you're at a sales job so my first job out of college was in tech sales and they gave everybody a thinkpad and ibm thinkpad it ran windows 10. no big deal but we did get access to microsoft their entire suite of products but i still wanted to use my ipad pro as much as i could so what i did was i used microsoft onenote on the ipad pro to make sure that it synced across all of my microsoft devices even though i was using it on an ipad so on the corporate side you could still use your ipad pro or any ipad for that matter and get from point a to point b it's just a matter of how you get from point a to point b that's a little bit different than the mac os side what i tell most people when it comes to ipad os versus mac os mac os has been around for a very long time so it's very familiar to a lot of people so picking up a macbook and just starting to use it will feel like second nature to a lot of people but when it comes to ipad os there's a little bit of a learning curve not everything is one-to-one like there's some things on mac os that are just way better like the finder app versus the files app there's something about the files app on ipad os that just it's it's not good enough and i couldn't sit there and tell you what i don't like about it it's just something that needs to get better they need to literally port the finder application into ipad os for me to be able to be like okay now this is ready to go but overall like i said you can still get everything you need to get done like i ran the entire microsoft suite on a daily basis now i was definitely on the basic level especially from applications like excel so on a basic level the microsoft suite of applications is amazing on the ipad pro and microsoft has actually put a lot of money in development to make sure that people using the microsoft suite on the ipad pro are happy with the product on the ipad pro but i will say that microsoft office on the mac os devices are a little bit more robust right especially on the excel side if you basically decided between mac os and ipad os and you want to go with one or the other just make sure that your applications and what you need is accessible and available and to the same level of availability on either device that you decide to choose and then one final aspect that i did want to touch on was gaming so i'm not a huge gamer per se but i do like to play nba 2k a lot so that's like the only game that i really play and i play it on my ipad pro all the time with my xbox controller because you know now xbox and playstation controllers are supported by apple natively so you can just bluetooth them in and you're good to go so what i decided to do was actually play you know about an hour an hour and a half of nba 2k on the m2 macbook air and to my surprise it got extremely hot like it got so hot to the point where like i couldn't have it on my bare lap i had to put a pillow on my knees and then put the computer on the pillow itself which probably didn't help with the cooling process at all but i just wanted to make that known and then when it comes to the ipad pro even running it on beta software like ipad os 16 it doesn't really ever get warm you know it doesn't i mean it gets a tiny bit warm but it doesn't get hot to the point where like i can't touch it or i can't put it on my lap or i can't do anything like that so keep that in mind i know that apple added some extra gpu cores and was supposed to have up to 40 better performance on the gpu side for things like gaming and even though it got extremely hot there was no real detriment to the actual gameplay itself now again i'm running nva 2k through apple arcade so i'm sure it's very optimized for the macbook air and for ipad os so keep that in mind it wasn't like i was on steam trying to play cyberpunk or something like that but i just wanted to share what happened when i was playing you know nba 2k on the laptop itself so it can be done it works really well the battery life didn't really take a hit it just got very very warm to the touch so to give my final thoughts and round everything off for me personally i'm going to choose the ipad pro 99 out of 100 times why because it's a little bit more fun it's more versatile you know it goes from being a tablet to a digital notepad to being my gaming console to being my main computer like all in one right and then yes the mt macbook air can do all that as well but it's just a matter of preference at this point like do you want to stay with something that's familiar like a laptop you know something that's very classic and the m2 design is beautiful don't get me wrong like i would be happy with either of them but if i had the choice and i had to pick one of them i'm going with the m1 ipad pro but if somebody were to ask me like hey i can only buy one device i'm going to school or i'm starting my first job which one should i go with and they aren't techies like you and me which one should i go with i'd probably recommend going with the m2 air or even the m1 error just because it's gonna be very familiar there's gonna be very little learning curve you know you can get everything that you need to get done like whatever you used in college is gonna work on a mac computer versus on the ipad you don't know if it's gonna work right away i mean don't get me wrong there's like millions of applications i could probably get you that same job done it's not gonna be probably a one-to-one when it comes to ipad os versus mac os but hey if you can afford both of them they actually complement each other very well and that's probably a whole separate video of how well they complement each other and some of the features like universal control and things like that and sidecar because it's a very powerful ecosystem and they call it the world garden for a reason but that's gonna do fizz video i know it was a long one if you guys did make it to the end leave a little dolphin in the comments down below and leave a comment down below also of which one you would pick right if i gave you 1500 today to go to the apple store are you picking up an ipad pro are you picking up a you know souped up m2 macbook air or maybe even an m1 macbook air let me know in the comments below i'm always very curious and let me know why as well you know is it a familiarity thing is it because do you want to go ipad pro because you're just using that more let me know in the comments below but if you guys do want to watch more videos on apple products like mac os ipad os and ios click on one of these videos right here until next time everybody i'm fernando and i'm outso i've been using the m2 macbook air in that midnight colorway for about a week now but if you know anything about me then you know that for the better part of the last four years i've been using an ipad pro as my main computer during that time i still use some sort of version of a macbook air for that five percent of stuff that the decent difference in terms of tangibility and like clickiness and feel it feels like you're actually grabbing the actual icons and you're grabbing you know the safari web page when you are scrolling through it so again it is a touch interface first so it's a little bit different how you interact with it but overall the display this category i'm gonna give it to the ipad just because overall it's a better display in my opinion but nothing wrong with the m2 macbook air display so now let's move on to the camera systems on both these devices so obviously without even really thinking about it or talking about it we're gonna have to give this one to the ipad pro be just because it does have rear sensors it has a real camera system like an iphone camera system on the rear again i literally never ever ever use the rear camera i think i've used it once or twice to scan a document maybe but outside of that i never use the rear cameras but you do have a wide angle and an ultra wide angle lens in there both 12 megapixel cameras and you have the lidar scanner which again i literally never use but it has some great real world applications and i'm sure over time you know that lidar scanner is going to help us with a lot of ar kind of implementation so a lot of augmented reality and then obviously on the m2 air you have no rear sensors but you do have a new 1080p camera on the front in order to take facetime calls and video chats which is a decent upgrade compared to last year's model with only the 720p but again it's nothing crazy like the selfie camera on the ipad pro itself is way better it comes with center stage built right into there so it does have that little motion display so when you're moving around it does follow you along so that's always a cool sight and you are able to record 1080p 30 frames per second in hd on the front selfie camera so overall i will give both the camera systems a leg up on the ipad pro versus m2 air but again if you're just doing some normal zoom calls some conference calls you're not using it for anything creative where everything needs to be super crispy then the m2 air is going to be more than enough i just do wish that in that notch they were able to fit face id sensors because that's a perfect segue into the next category which is authentication so on the authentication side it's very simple you have touch id on the m2 air which is extremely fast it does require a little motion of the hand right you got to move your hand forward to unlock it or if you have an apple watch it will unlock with your apple watch which is how i have it set up but then on the ipad pro you have face id which works in any orientation it works every single time it works flawlessly and technically you don't have to actually do anything but you do have to actually swipe up to actually unlock it fully after the face id is engaged to continue on this hardware train let's talk about the actual speaker systems technically they both have quad speakers it's just where they're placed so on the ipad pro they're all around the side railings of the ipad pro and then in the m2 macbook air they actually moved it from the sides of the keyboard which that's how it was on the m1 air so now in the m2 air it's actually in the hinge itself but it's still a quad speaker system and honestly it's a great speaker i'm gonna have some b-roll showing you guys what they both sound like and i'll let you guys make a decision on which one sounds better do in my opinion the ipad pro is just a little bit better it's a little bit more of a fuller sound a little bit more bass especially if you have the ipad pro like sitting on a table then you get a nice little thump whenever you're listening to music but overall you're going to be happy with either of these i'm just a little bit biased on the ipad pro side because that's what i love to use and that's what i use on a daily basis but i would consider the m2 air best in class for this size computer because it's way above average and way better than expected so so far in our little battle in our competition the ipad pro is winning but this next one has to do with the actual port situation so on the ipad pro you have one thunderbolt 4 port on the right hand side of the ipad pro depending on the orientation that you're holding it in and then if you have the magic keyboard which i do suggest you get if you're going to make it your only computer then you have a charging port on the hinge of that magic keyboard for the ipad pro keep in mind it's only four power pass-through it has zero data pass-through capabilities and through that port you can technically only charge up to 21 watts and then if you plug directly into the ipad pro you get up to 33 watts of quote on quote fast charging which to me is more than enough because technically i always leave it plugged in for the most part but then on the macbook air side on the m2 air now with the addition of the new magsafe you have two free thunderbolt 4 ports you can have one connected to a display another one connected to a hard drive or a dongle or whatever you see fit and then the magsafe as long as you have the correct brick will charge up to 67 watts fast charge for the m2 macbook air and one thing that i did wish kind of talking about the ports and the capabilities of these ports both of these devices only allow you to have one external display now they can push up to a 6k display so if you do have a 5 6 000 pro display xdr and you want to plug in both your ipad or your m2 air by all means go for it because it can output to that type of display but again you can only do it to one external display keep that in mind so speaking about ports and charging let's talk about battery life battery life is a very important aspect of these devices because they're on the go devices they're mobile they're versatile they're thin they're slim they're light they work extremely well outside of an office and this one by far goes to the m2 air apple promises 18 hours of video playback through apple tv so if you stay in apple's wall garden in their app ecosystem you're going to get a lot a lot of battery life like 15 16 to 18 hours probably i personally i use a lot of chrome a lot of slack a lot of third-party applications and i still couldn't even go through an entire battery in one single day so this is a absolute weekend device you can plug it in take it with you for two three days at 100 with mid to heavy use and you'll be totally fine like i was putting this thing through its paces and i could not run down the battery in one day's time i was playing video games i was editing videos i was going through the microsoft suite i was had like 18 chrome tabs open playing videos and still it was working perfectly fine and the battery life did not even move versus the ipad pro ipad pro is very hit or miss if you're doing some very task intensive things you're only going to get like four to five hours of battery life especially if you're plugged into that magic keyboard if you're just watching some videos scrolling through safari answering emails you can get closer to the eight to ten hours of battery life apple says we get up to 10 hours of battery life on the 12.9 inch ipad pro i don't think i've had a single day like that in my entire life of owning this ipad pro so keep that in mind if you want something that's a battery warrior then the m2 macbook air is going to be the way to go because that thing is going to last you for a very long time and even with the m1 macbook air that i've had since the release i've used that thing a lot and even after about 18 19 months of use the battery life is still extremely strong and i never have to plug it in after a full days of use so keep that in mind if you are thinking about something purely based on battery life so the last thing i want to bring up from a hardware perspective are just the overall designs of both of these devices so on the ipad pro side obviously it's a tablet first it's very industrial look i mean the main and only real reason why i decided to go full ipad pro back in 2018 was purely based on aesthetic i got that ipad pro and thought to myself wow like how is this computer how could something so light and so slim and something that's so powerful just how did they make that happen i remember thinking and being in awe of like this ipad pro can video edit i can facetime i can get word documents done i can search through the web i can use it as a bluetooth speaker i can do whatever i want with this tablet and it's so slim and sleek and beautiful that that's the main reason why i went with the ipad pro and then you have the versatility aspect of the ipad pro because again it is a tablet first but you slap it on a magic keyboard and it's a computer right then and there you also have the apple pencil it turns into a digital notepad i use it as my main gaming console of choice i don't do too much gaming and we'll touch on that in a little bit but i use it as my main console because i just love playing nba 2k on apple arcade with my xbox controller and then you have the design of the new m2 air which again in its own right is beautiful too i love how they went back to that squared off design more symmetrical no more wedge you know it kind of fits that new aesthetic of the more industrial like uh mac studio vibe which we all love to see the midnight version is amazing it is a big fingerprint magnet but wiping it a couple times a day doesn't really hurt anybody just know that it is a fingerprint magnet after about a week of use and i know a lot of people have their opinions on the notch on the m2 macbook air and for the most part yes the moment you open it especially if you haven't used one of the macbook pros of late which i never have you will see it you will notice it it is in your face but then after about an hour or two of use it completely disappears so overall the notch is really not that big of a deal again i just wish they were able to add face id into that notch pretty much a preference thing when it comes to the overall design of each device there's something about the ipad pro being able to slap it on the magic keyboard with that cool floating hinge design and then it turned into a laptop you pull it off and then you're in affinity photo editing a thumbnail with the apple pencil a lot of versatility on the ipad pro side so i personally like the ipad pro a little bit better but the m2 air also again a beautiful device like i would still be ecstatic to use it as my main computer so now that we got all the hardware stuff out of the way because that's something that's very tangible that you can actually listen to when it comes to the stereo speakers the screen obviously one is better than the other but when it comes to software it's a big big preference thing so just to preface before we go into the software aspect i am running the public beta of ipad os 16 on my ipad pro so i do have access to stage manager and then on the actual m2 macbook air i'm just running the regular version of mac os monterey but i thought the best way to talk about software it's not really showing you guys the ins and outs because i'm sure you know what mac os looks like you know what ipad os looks like what i want to talk about is the different workflows that i'm able to do with both of these devices because i am on the creative side right i make youtube videos i edit thumbnails i edit videos in lumafusion right i'm making sure that everything is nicely tight and fit on the creative side but then i'm also on the corporate side i use a lot of the microsoft suite i use slack all the time i'm using web-based crms like salesforce and and microsoft dynamics so these are all things that you can use on both of the devices so i wanted to walk you guys through each one of my workflows and see which one overall is a little bit better a little bit more efficient so we'll go from there so on the creative side it's very simple they're both very good machines for the creative side right that's what apple's known for they're for the creative they're for the person rendering games or for the person you know editing video and things like that so my workflow is very very simple for these youtube videos i record everything on an iphone 13 pro max i airdrop that footage onto the ipad pro i edit that footage on lumafusion in the ipad pro then make a thumbnail inside of affinity photo which is kind of like a photoshop but for the ipad and then just upload everything onto the youtube app and that is my creative workflow everybody it's that simple but the same can be said on that m2 macbook air you know you can still use your iphone 13 pro max or any iphone for that matter to film your a-roll and your b-roll you can still air drop it onto the m2 air use something free like imovie that comes included or you can use something like final cut pro it just depends on what your workflow and what you're used to right i know a lot of people were upset that things like final cut pro and xcode and the adobe suite didn't come to the ipad pro this year and they've been mad about that for a very long time because they think ipad apps aren't professional enough but in my opinion to each their own like for me lumafusion affinity photo those are professional enough applications for me to get professional work done and then on the mac os side you know everybody has their own version of a professional app it's just a matter of what you need to get done and how you can get that done and make sure that you can get that done so if you're used to mac os stick with mac os and if you're used to ipad os like i am stick with ipad os and have a little bit more fun on the ipad side because ipad's just a more fun device to use and now let's talk about the corporate workflow so let's say you're at a sales job so my first job out of college was in tech sales and they gave everybody a thinkpad and ibm thinkpad it ran windows 10. no big deal but we did get access to microsoft their entire suite of products but i still wanted to use my ipad pro as much as i could so what i did was i used microsoft onenote on the ipad pro to make sure that it synced across all of my microsoft devices even though i was using it on an ipad so on the corporate side you could still use your ipad pro or any ipad for that matter and get from point a to point b it's just a matter of how you get from point a to point b that's a little bit different than the mac os side what i tell most people when it comes to ipad os versus mac os mac os has been around for a very long time so it's very familiar to a lot of people so picking up a macbook and just starting to use it will feel like second nature to a lot of people but when it comes to ipad os there's a little bit of a learning curve not everything is one-to-one like there's some things on mac os that are just way better like the finder app versus the files app there's something about the files app on ipad os that just it's it's not good enough and i couldn't sit there and tell you what i don't like about it it's just something that needs to get better they need to literally port the finder application into ipad os for me to be able to be like okay now this is ready to go but overall like i said you can still get everything you need to get done like i ran the entire microsoft suite on a daily basis now i was definitely on the basic level especially from applications like excel so on a basic level the microsoft suite of applications is amazing on the ipad pro and microsoft has actually put a lot of money in development to make sure that people using the microsoft suite on the ipad pro are happy with the product on the ipad pro but i will say that microsoft office on the mac os devices are a little bit more robust right especially on the excel side if you basically decided between mac os and ipad os and you want to go with one or the other just make sure that your applications and what you need is accessible and available and to the same level of availability on either device that you decide to choose and then one final aspect that i did want to touch on was gaming so i'm not a huge gamer per se but i do like to play nba 2k a lot so that's like the only game that i really play and i play it on my ipad pro all the time with my xbox controller because you know now xbox and playstation controllers are supported by apple natively so you can just bluetooth them in and you're good to go so what i decided to do was actually play you know about an hour an hour and a half of nba 2k on the m2 macbook air and to my surprise it got extremely hot like it got so hot to the point where like i couldn't have it on my bare lap i had to put a pillow on my knees and then put the computer on the pillow itself which probably didn't help with the cooling process at all but i just wanted to make that known and then when it comes to the ipad pro even running it on beta software like ipad os 16 it doesn't really ever get warm you know it doesn't i mean it gets a tiny bit warm but it doesn't get hot to the point where like i can't touch it or i can't put it on my lap or i can't do anything like that so keep that in mind i know that apple added some extra gpu cores and was supposed to have up to 40 better performance on the gpu side for things like gaming and even though it got extremely hot there was no real detriment to the actual gameplay itself now again i'm running nva 2k through apple arcade so i'm sure it's very optimized for the macbook air and for ipad os so keep that in mind it wasn't like i was on steam trying to play cyberpunk or something like that but i just wanted to share what happened when i was playing you know nba 2k on the laptop itself so it can be done it works really well the battery life didn't really take a hit it just got very very warm to the touch so to give my final thoughts and round everything off for me personally i'm going to choose the ipad pro 99 out of 100 times why because it's a little bit more fun it's more versatile you know it goes from being a tablet to a digital notepad to being my gaming console to being my main computer like all in one right and then yes the mt macbook air can do all that as well but it's just a matter of preference at this point like do you want to stay with something that's familiar like a laptop you know something that's very classic and the m2 design is beautiful don't get me wrong like i would be happy with either of them but if i had the choice and i had to pick one of them i'm going with the m1 ipad pro but if somebody were to ask me like hey i can only buy one device i'm going to school or i'm starting my first job which one should i go with and they aren't techies like you and me which one should i go with i'd probably recommend going with the m2 air or even the m1 error just because it's gonna be very familiar there's gonna be very little learning curve you know you can get everything that you need to get done like whatever you used in college is gonna work on a mac computer versus on the ipad you don't know if it's gonna work right away i mean don't get me wrong there's like millions of applications i could probably get you that same job done it's not gonna be probably a one-to-one when it comes to ipad os versus mac os but hey if you can afford both of them they actually complement each other very well and that's probably a whole separate video of how well they complement each other and some of the features like universal control and things like that and sidecar because it's a very powerful ecosystem and they call it the world garden for a reason but that's gonna do fizz video i know it was a long one if you guys did make it to the end leave a little dolphin in the comments down below and leave a comment down below also of which one you would pick right if i gave you 1500 today to go to the apple store are you picking up an ipad pro are you picking up a you know souped up m2 macbook air or maybe even an m1 macbook air let me know in the comments below i'm always very curious and let me know why as well you know is it a familiarity thing is it because do you want to go ipad pro because you're just using that more let me know in the comments below but if you guys do want to watch more videos on apple products like mac os ipad os and ios click on one of these videos right here until next time everybody i'm fernando and i'm out\n"
