The News Ending on February 18th, 2011

Hey guys, this is David from The Unlocker.com and this is the news ending on the week of February 18th, 2011. Okay, so there's a lot of news to cover this week because of the Mobile World Commerce Event Barcelona over the last few days. So, let's see if we can weed through all the craziness and bring you the most important stuff.

Microsoft showed off the future of Windows Phone 7, with new software updates planned for this year that will add copy and paste multitasking, a card like UI, Twitter integration throughout the system, and a Mobile IE9 browser with HTML5 support. Still no flash, which seems to be Microsoft's strategy - slowly releasing what would be standard features in OS nowadays over a lengthy period of time. I still say that Windows Phone 7 has potential, but all the expected features need to be added sooner rather than later, and not mentioning Flash leaves us to believe it's not coming anytime soon, which again is unacceptable if they want to compete with Android.

Htc announced a few upgrades to their current devices, namely the Incredible S, Desire S, and Wildfire. All of these devices have slight upgrades from their non-S counterparts, some having larger screens, slight pumps, and more RAM. However, I think only one of these will be seen here in the States - the Incredible S, which looks like it might even have T-Mobile's 3G.

Htc's big news was announcing a new tablet they're working on. While other tablets shown off at MWC didn't conjure up as much excitement, this new one does have some decent specs and if it's launched with a reasonable price tag, it might be a nice option for some people. The specs include a 1.5 GHz processor, 7-inch screen, 1 GB of RAM, 32 GB of onboard storage, and a unique pressure-sensitive capacitive stylus.

Sony showed off their family of Xperia phones, including the mid-range Neo and Pro, and the higher-end Arc. However, everyone's curious about one phone - Sony's already well-covered PlayStation-branded device called the Play. But we'll have to wait and see more information on this one.

Lg decided to show off two new devices at MWC, both of which share a feature that isn't found on any other mainstream devices here. Their first 3D-capable device is the Optimus Pad, an 8.9-inch display running Android Honeycomb with dual-core CPUs and has dual cameras on the rear for recording video in 3D. To play back 3D content, you'll need to purchase 3D glasses, but having that option as a differentiator is pretty cool.

As for the second device, Lg basically took the 3D fun from the tablet and threw it into a smaller package with one added benefit - the 3D effect doesn't require glasses. The phone can display the 3D directly on the screen using parallax barrier technology, and you can turn off the 3D feature whenever you want. Like the Optimus Pad, this phone has dual cameras on the back for 3D video recording as well.

Last but not least, Samsung showed off a phone and tablet like Lg did, but theirs were quite focused on 3D fun. The tablet announced by Samsung has a 10.1-inch screen running on Android Honeycomb with a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, making it primed to compete with the likes of Motorola Zoom and the LG Optimus Pad. It's also a nice step up from the Samsung Galaxy Tab of old.

The phone announced by Samsung is called the Samsung Galaxy S2. Despite its name, this isn't the new S2 everyone was expecting - despite being beefed up with a dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 4.27-inch Super AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p recording on the rear and 2 MP front-facing camera, all this is housed in an 8.45 millimeter thin shell, making it one of the thinnest smartphones ever.
