The Popularity of Pom Poms: A DIY Guide to Creating Adorable Embellishments
In recent days, pom poms have been popping up everywhere - on beach bags, jewelry pillows, and even keychains. These adorable embellishments add a perfect pop of color and texture to just about anything. Today, we're going to show you how easy it is to make these charming additions right at home.
To get started, you'll need just three simple materials: yarn, cardboard, and scissors. First, we'll create our pom pom maker using some cardboard. Simply draw or trace a circle onto your cardboard - mine's about 4 in in diameter, but feel free to adjust the size to suit your needs. Once you have your circle, cut it out using sharp scissors. Then, place it on top of another piece of cardboard and use it as a template for a second, smaller circle. Cut out the second circle until you're about an inch away from your starting point, leaving you with two identical pieces of cardboard that resemble C's or little pac.
Next, place these two pieces of cardboard on top of each other and begin wrapping your yarn. I'm using this beautiful gradient rainbow yarn that I love - feel free to use any type of yarn you like! There's no specific number of times you need to wrap the yarn, but I find it works best when it's at least an inch thick. Once you're done wrapping, tie off the two ends and your pom pom maker is complete.
Now, take your scissors and slide them between the two pieces of cardboard, cutting all the way around the edge. Next, add an additional piece of yarn to wrap around the middle of the frame and pull it tight to secure it with two knots. Finally, remove the cardboard frame to reveal your perfectly formed pom pom!
This method is surprisingly satisfying, and you can see why I love it so much - a perfectly circular shape that's just begging to be used on all sorts of projects. Of course, if your pom pom needs a bit of shaping, you can always prune it with some scissors. And the best part? You can make these adorable embellishments in just a few minutes!
