The Nokia 7 Plus: A Affordable Flagship with a Unique Charm
HMD Global, the owners of Nokia, have described their new flagship device as an affordable flagship phone. For me, it's the Nokia 7 plus that really stands out as the most interesting and potentially worth buying. Starting from £400 or around $450, the 7 plus is almost half the price of the top-end Sirocco, yet I think it looks and feels much nicer.
One of the standout features of the 7 plus is its unique body design. It's no Kia's first phone with a taller 18 by 9 aspect ratio and combined with thinner bezels, the 7 plus is a great-looking phone. It has another minion body but it uses a ceramic paint on the back which means there's no visible antenna lines creating quite a unique looking phone.
Specs wise, the 7 plus is more upper mid-range than flagship with a Snapdragon 660 for gigs of RAM and 64 gigs of storage. Despite using a less powerful chip, Nokia confidently say this is a two day phone. However, I'll test this properly in my full review to see if it lives up to their claims.
The camera on the 7 plus comes with a dual lens setup with one 12 megapixel main camera and a second 13 megapixel telephoto lens which gives you a two times optical zoom. Nokia is also bringing back the pro camera modes which makes it easier to adjust the camera settings as well as some cool new AI camera features. There's also a 16 megapixel front selfie cam that uses super sampling which essentially combines 4 pixels into one so you get the most detail and the least noise possible in your photos.
From my brief hands-on, I've had photos look really good even in difficult lighting, so I'm looking forward to testing it properly in my full review. Some of the cool features include a fast fingerprint reader on the back new face unlocking software 3D personas avatar emoji things which are a bit like apples and emoji.
One thing that's pleasing is that they've kept the three normal headphone jack, which is definitely a plus for many users. First impressions of Nokia 7 plus are really good with its competitive pricing beautiful design slick stock Android software and nifty dual camera setup. I really think the 7 plus could be a big hit when it comes out in April even though it does have strong competition from the likes of the 1 plus 5t.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco, on the other hand, is more powerful although it still uses last year's Snapdragon 835. While the curved edges felt really sharp like the old Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, I just weren't as impressed by it as I am with the 7 plus. That's what I think, but what about you? What do you make of the 7 plus? Let me know in the comments below.
