Welcome to Inside Evo: A Glimpse into the World of High-Performance Cars
We're back with another episode of Inside Evo, where we share some exciting footage and insights from our recent adventures. This time around, we've got an exclusive look at the McLaren 675 Longtail, a car that's sure to get your heart racing. We've been fortunate enough to have access to some incredible footage, shot by yours truly during a press day at Silverstone.
I must say, it was quite an experience getting behind the wheel of this incredible machine. The atmosphere was electric, with owners waiting eagerly to take their first spins in the P1 GTRs they'd purchased. Meanwhile, we had four F1 GTRs on display, along with a former F1 car that was almost unrecognizable without its bodywork – it was like sitting at the front of a rocket! The sheer power and speed of these cars is awe-inspiring, and I couldn't wait to get behind the wheel of the 675 Longtail.
As luck would have it, we were invited to take the 675 Longtail out for a spin. We were greeted by Chris Goodwin, McLaren's test driver, who showed us the ropes and introduced us to the car's features. However, our drive was cut short when Chris had to leave in a hurry – much to our surprise! Fortunately, we were soon joined by another driver, who just happened to be wearing an iconic yellow-green and blue helmet. Without hesitation, he handed over the keys, and I got to experience the thrill of driving the 675 Longtail for myself.
As I settled into the passenger seat beside Bruno Senna – what a cool guy! – I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The weight of F1 responsibilities seemed to have been lifted from his shoulders, allowing him to simply enjoy the drive. With his expertise behind the wheel, I was treated to an unforgettable ride that left me eager for more.
So, what makes the 675 Longtail so special? For starters, it's arguably the ultimate expression of the original MP412C. Okay, maybe we're being a bit dramatic – but it's certainly up there in terms of performance and handling. The car has been tweaked to produce an impressive 666 brake horsepower, which is devilish for its size.
One notable change from the standard 12C is the addition of long tail fins, which were originally used on the McLaren F1 Longtail to enhance downforce at high speeds. This subtle tweak has made a significant difference in terms of performance – with a lap time that's now just 2.9 seconds quicker than the 488 GTB. The chassis has also undergone significant changes, including stiffer springs and a new front splitter.
But it's not just about raw power – the 675 Longtail is also a masterclass in handling and dynamics. With its sharp steering and responsive up-shifts, this car is a joy to drive. And let me tell you, I was hooked from the very first lap! The sound of that titanium exhaust system is music to my ears – it's like nothing else on four wheels.
In short, the 675 Longtail is an absolute treat for anyone who loves high-performance cars. We're eager to get our hands on this machine again and experience all its thrills for ourselves. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwelcome to inside Evo now we haven't done one of these for a while but it's generally when we've got some footage which we think you'd like to enjoy we want to share it with you but equally we know it's not exactly the best footage usually because um somebody like me is shoted um anyway we got a call the other day saying could we get across the Silverstone U because there was a McLaren that we could have a ride in and so I grabbed a couple of GoPros and ran out of the office and people didn't miss me and when I got there it was pretty extraordinary it was clear it wasn't a normal press day uh we were with owners who were waiting for their first goes in the P1 GTRs that they bought we gearing up for that on the next couple of days and there were a couple of uh well there were four F1 GTRs there and there was an ex Center F1 car which was just well it was extraordinary it had its body work off and apart from the engine just the sight of the front of the car and how much you were sort of sitting at the front of a rocket it looked like um with your feet in between the the front wheels it looked um yeah even more scary than with Bodywork on I think there was also a P1 there obviously P1 GTR running around but what we'd been invited to go and have a ride in was the 675 longtail now we're hoping to drive this later this year so this was just a first experience and I was mostly taken out by Chris Goodwin who is mcclaren's uh test driver who we've seen plenty of times before uh but came towards the end of the day and it was getting a bit lce and the car disappeared going to be refu and we were all sort of looking at our watches thinking um 5:00 was coming around all too quickly car reappeared brilliant and then there was no Chris Goodwin to be found so they found me another driver who just happened to have a fairly iconic yellow green and blue helmet and I bung the GoPros in and apologies for the fact that they've obviously blown out on the wind screen in terms of the exposure but we thought you'd like to see it nonetheless oh oh so what is the 675 LT well it's arguably the ultimate expression of the original mp412c if you're being uncharitable then you might say that the P1 is actually the expression of that we'll ignore that for the moment the 12C became the 650s which has now spawned this the 675 LT LT standing for longtail which was uh something used on the McLaren F1 longtail when they sort of extended it to make it more competitive at Lamar in fact this is only 34 mm longer but the changes are fairly significant it's now up to 666 brake horsepower devilish number over the was one and the although the not 60 time still about 2.9 seconds at about the same but not 124 mph is now 7.9 seconds which is faintly ridiculous and crucially not 4 seconds quicker than new 488 GTB they've also done chassis changes so you've got uh 27 cents stiffer Springs at the front 63% stiffer Springs at the rear uh more arrows you got an 80 80% bigger front splitter and that wider rear wing um you've also got titanium exhaust new titanium exhaust cross flow so it's actually slightly longer um before it reaches the rear and as you can hear um that certainly makes a difference it's much louder it's a slightly more sort of Roar Edge to it um I can't really tell you much more than that to be honest uh I just I absolutely love my ride around the passenger seat with Brun Center he's very cool guy really Smiley really just sort of almost Carefree he's like a puppy really and um it's almost as though the weight of F1 has been lifted from his shoulders and he can now just enjoy his driving he's certainly extremely talented behind the wheel um and he loved the car as I say he said it was the his favorite car he driven all day and these were his thoughts so what did you think of the uh 675 LT that we've just been out in well it's uh certainly my favorite car um out of all the other the ones I've drove so far it's so so easy to be on the ballpark so easy to control it on the neutral side of things you can play with some traction you can play with the front end and uh it just responds for everything you do the steering and the up shifts are are really sharp the down shifts are sharp it's yeah it's really nice I want to drive it again so that's just a small bit of footage of the 675 LT um hope you enjoyed it hope you we get to drive the car very soon there's also an interview with Bruno Senna in issue 211 of the magazine which is on sale at the moment um so go Ahad and buy that as well if you would like to see some more McLaren videos then why not have a look at our original 12C road trip video or if you like your McLaren slightly more racy have a look at the 650s Sprint and GT3 car that are in our Track Car of the Year video\n"
